Intelligence and Radicalism in John Dewey's Philosophy.D. H. De Grood - 1969 - Telos: Critical Theory of the Contemporary 1969 (3):72-81.
Dewey's development, on the socio-political plane, is analyzed in terms of his pre-roosevelt quasi-socialism to his post-roosevelt, 1930's mild liberalism and anti-communism. the complicated relations of dewey's with the emerging "third world" revolutions and with the new soviet revolutionary government and with the trotskyist (sidney hook) movement in the u. s. during that time, made a break between dewey's new brand of gradualist, piecemealist, plague-on-both-your-houses liberalism and the real left, and dewey's outlook maintained its continuity as a dominant mode of (...)

The offer of the fast food company gives rise to suspicion. This seems to be based on unfounded stereotypes, however. This paper argues that we need to preserve choices in taking particular courses of action. There is nothing inherently wrong in fast food consumption so long as consumers are made aware of the importance of weight management and proper nutrition.

This paper inquires into the nature of intertheoretic relations between psychology and neuroscience. This relationship has been characterized by some as one in which psychological explanations eventually will fall away as otiose, overthrown completely by neurobiological ones. Against this view it will be argued that it squares poorly with scientific practices and empirical developments in the cognitive neurosciences. We analyse a case from research on visual perception, which suggests a much more subtle and complex interplay between psychology and neuroscience than (...)

Broad Medical Uncertainty and the ethical obligation for openness.Rebecca C. H. Brown, Mícheál de Barra & Brian D. Earp - 2022 - Synthese 200 (2):1-29.
This paper argues that there exists a collective epistemic state of ‘Broad Medical Uncertainty’ regarding the effectiveness of many medical interventions. We outline the features of BMU, and describe some of the main contributing factors. These include flaws in medical research methodologies, bias in publication practices, financial and other conflicts of interest, and features of how evidence is translated into practice. These result in a significant degree of uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of many medical treatments and unduly optimistic beliefs about (...)

Invariants versus non-accidental properties as information used in affine pattern matching.Johan Wagemans, A. De Troy, Luc Van Gool, Wood Jr & D. H. Foster - 1993 - Bulletin of the Psychonomic Society 31:385.
A series of experiments was performed in which subjects indicated whether two four-dot patterns were the same, although possibly viewed from different directions, or different, paired at random. Analyses of responses times and error rates suggest that the subjects' performance in this affine matching task is based on non-accidental properties such as convexity, parallelism, collinearity, and proximity, rather than on real affine invariants such as the ratio of triangular areas.
