In anticipation of a new edition of the Passio apostolorum Petri et Pauli, this article analyzes the recensio conducted by Lipsius for his edition of 1891. The review of the main variants highlighted by the editor reverses his thesis: they depend on innovations by reduction, not by interpolation. Such innovations could perhaps depend on early medieval liturgical use of the work. With regard to the methodology, the comparison with the Greek tradition of the work, as an external criterion of (...) evaluation, appears misleading, since it is unlikely that Greek is the original language. The paper studies the historical background for the ‘idealist’ reading of Spinoza usually traced back to British and German Idealism. Here, I follow this history further back than and focus on one earlier idealist reading, indeed perhaps the mother of them all. It can be found in the _Elucidarius cabalisticus, sive reconditae Hebraeorum philosophiae brevis et succincta recensio_ by Johann Georg Wachter, a kabbalist interpretation of Spinoza published in 1706. I am principally interested in the importance that Wachter’s book may (...) have had for German philosophy in the second half of the eighteenth century. Focusing on Moses Mendelssohn’s _Philosophische Gespräche_ of 1755, I argue that, via Mendelssohn, the Elucidarius cabalisticus is perhaps the earliest possible source of the idealist reading of Spinoza that dominated the German _Spinozabild_ from throughout the _Pantheismusstreit_ up to the second edition of Herder’s 1800 _Gott: Einige Gespräche_, culminating with Hegel’s ‘acosmist’ reading of Spinoza in the 1825–26 lectures on the history of philosophy. The Nyayamanjari was composed in Kashmir, in the ninth century CE, by Bhatta Jayanta. It is a compendium of theses concerning ontological, epistemological and linguistic issues developed in the classical period of Indian philosophy. Jayanta's approximate date is confirmed by both internal and external evidences, so the Nyayamanjari has become a landmark in the historiography of Indian philosophy. Despite its relevance, however, the history of the textual transmission of the Nyayamanjari is in many respects still unknown. This new critical edition (...) is based on a comprehensive inventory of all the known sources, on a detailed description of the manuscripts, on a textual bibliography of the printed editions, on a genealogical study of the textual transmission, and on a rich apparatus of the indirect transmission. An important result of this research has been the development of a new, rigorous, and yet pragmatic method to edit Nyayamanjari passages, without the demand of formidable resources in terms of time, man-power, and funds. The first part of this publication includes all the propaedeutic steps in view of the critical edition. More specifically, it consists of the recensio of the known Nyayamanjari sources, including their inventory, their description, the collation of their variants, and the study of their genealogy, resulting in a fully documented stemma codicum which guides the editorial choices during the reconstruction of the edited text. The second part contains the critical edition, which covers the first of the three sections composing the sixth book of the Nyayamanjari. This particular section consists of a discussion on semantics and epistemology from the perspective of the Vyakarana, Mimansa and Nyaya traditions, hinging around the holistic theory of the sphota. Die im 1./2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. von einem Anonymus verfaßte Vita Aesopi (= VA), eine „fiktionale Biographie mit Elementen des komisch-realistischen Romans“ (2), wurde zu Beginn der Neuzeit in aller Welt dadurch bekannt, daß sie in lateinischer und deutscher Übersetzung als einer von mehreren Texten in Heinrich Steinhöwels Esopus von 1476/77 erschien, einem „Bestseller“ der Frühdruckzeit. Aber das griechische Original des VA-Textes, der im 16. Jahrhundert z.B. den Autoren des Lazarillo de Tormes und des Till Eulenspiegel wichtige Anregungen gegeben haben (...) dürfte, entsprach in seinem Wortlaut nicht dem kaiserzeitlichen Text – dieser ist uns zwar nicht erhalten, aber die Version des Codex 397 in der New Yorker Pierpont Morgan Library (G) steht ihm wahrscheinlich sehr nahe –, sondern stellte eine Epitome der Urfassung dar, die recensio Westermanniana (= rec. W). Diese Version versuchte Ben Edwin Perry durch Kollation von 11 Handschriften zu rekonstruieren (Aesopica, Urbana, IL, 1952, 81-107), obwohl er bemerkte, daß innerhalb der Kodizes, auch wenn sie in der Wiedergabe des Stoffs einander mehr ähneln als G, wiederum zwei Fassungen zu unterscheiden sind, repräsentiert durch die beiden Handschriftengruppen MORNLFVW und BPS. Da nun der in Steinhöwels Ausgabe publizierte und von neuzeitlichen Autoren mehrfach rezipierte Text der VA – es handelt sich dabei um die lateinische Übersetzung des Rinuccio da Castiglione d'Arezzo – in griechischer Sprache in einem Kodex stand, der als Ahn von P gelten darf, ist es sehr verdienstlich, daß K. die eine der beiden Fassungen von rec. W, die so besonders wirkungsmächtig war – sie ist wahrscheinlich ins frühe 6. Jahrhundert zu datieren, und ihr sind außer B, P und S das Kodexblatt Th und die erst 1991 aufgetauchte Hs. A zuzuordnen –, als selbständigen Text der VA herausgegeben und zugleich sowohl literaturgeschichtlich als auch sprachwissenschaftlich analysiert hat. (shrink)

For this Fable both Ademar and the Weissenburg MS. fail us. We have, however, the representatives of R, which Thiele groups under his Recensio Gallicana, and one which he places in his Recensio Vetus; of the other two one does not contain it, and the third, the Erfordtensis at Berlin, has a wholly independent version, which Thiele most strangely regards as imported from ‘Phaedrus in prose,’ although neither in diction nor in remnants of metre has it anything to (...) suggest such an origin. Méthode d'étude du latin – et plus tard aussi du grec – pour grands débutants, les Hermeneumata Pseudodositheana (HP) – ainsi improprement appelés parce qu'ils sont placés, dans le Codex Sangallensis 902, immédiatement après l'Ars Dosithei magistri – étaient destinés à des Grecs de l'Empire romain qui voulaient apprendre le latin. La connaissance de la langue de Rome était en effet indispensable pour accéder à des postes importants dans l'administration, l'armée ou la justice, surtout après les réformes dioclétiennes. Composés sans (...) doute au IIIe s. – la 4e section de la recension de Leyde date du 11 septembre 207 (CGL, III, 56, 30–34), ces manuels bilingues très diffusés dans l'Europe carolingienne font penser à notre méthode moderne Assimil. Sorte de Lehrbuch à finalité pratique, ils nous sont parvenus non dans un texte unique, mais dans neuf recensions différentes, conservées par une cinquantaine de manuscrits occidentaux: Hygini Herm. (HH), Herm. Montepessulana (HMp), Herm. Bruxellensia (HB), Herm. Stephani (HS), Herm. Leidensia (HL), Herm. Monacensia (HM), Herm. Einsidlensia (HE), Herm. Vaticana (HV), réédités récemment par G. Brugnoli et M. Buonocore, dont l'auteur est sans doute chrétien, et Hermeneumata Celtis (HC). Vu l'impossibilité de reconstituer les rapports de dépendance entres ces diverses recensions, elles ont été éditées séparément dans le troisième volume du Corpus Glossariorum Latinorum de G. GOETZ (Leipzig 1892). Ce n'est que tout récemment que FLAMMINI (F.) a tenté un examen de la recensio plenior Leidensis en vue d'établir le texte critique des HP. Après avoir présenté les résultats de cette enquête dans un article intitulé Prolegomena alla recensio plenior degli ‘Hermeneumata Pseudodositheana’, dans Giornale Italiano di Filologia 42, 1990, p. 3–43, il publie maintenant le texte dans la Bibliotheca Teubneriana. No one who has read with reasonable attention the Works and Days, the Theogony, the Shield, and even the fragments of the lost Hesiodic poems, can have failed to notice a peculiar feature. Again and again a passage, be it longer or shorter, is followed by what may be called, if not a true ‘doublet,’ at least an ‘echo’—a second passage reproducing the general idea, and often the more prominent verbal details of the preceding lines. In fact, in these poems (...) we have a series of variants or alternate versions. Editors of the Hesiodic works have indeed drawn attention to many of these ‘echoes,’ but they have been content to let the matter rest when they have drawn a distinction between ‘prima’ and ‘altera recensio,’ and have labelled one or other of them as ‘spurious.’ Yet this feature in the Hesiodic vulgate is surely of the highest interest and importance. How came these variant passages to be ‘stitched’ together, and when was the stitching done? (shrink)

L'attento esame della tradizione manoscritta delle epistole di Procopio di Gaza ha permesso al suo ultimo editore (A. Garzya) di pubblicare un corpus di 166 lettere, basato su una recensio molto più ampia rispetto a quella dei suoi predecessori e soprattutto più completo per le nuove lettere, venute alla luce nel corso dei secoli.

Written in 620 ca., the Pandectes of the Holy Scripture of Antiochus, monk of the Great Laura of Saint-Sabas, represents a remarkable example of the kefavlaia literary genre in the early Byzantine period. It includes, among its many patristic sources, a series of 26 passages borrowed from the Epistles of Ignatius of Antioch, used in their recensio media. The quotations are distributed in 13 of the 130 total chapters of the work. The present study aims not only to evaluate (...) the textual contribution of the Pandectes to the study of the Epistles of Ignatius, but also attempts a critical outline of its wide manuscript tradition and text. The Doctrina ad Antiochum ducem, incorrectly attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria, owes its importance to the transmission of extensive extracts from the Shepherd of Hermas. Doctrina is transmitted in Greek in two recensions, a brevior and a longa ; however the same recensio longa has been subject to a number of redactional phases. A Latin version edited only recently, the object of this present study, sheds light on these later redactions. Stylistic and historical-literary considerations prompt a dating in the (...) 40’s of the sixth century and assign paternity to Paschasius of Dumium, a monkwho lived in a monastery of the same name in northwest of Braga that was founded at the same time by Martin of Braga. The dating of the Latin version also entails a more precise dating of the original Greek, assignable to the beginning of the sixth century. (shrink)

The exclamatory particle οὐᾶ, although attested only nine times between the first and the third century AD (and never before), also occurs twelve times in the „Vita Aesopi“, the archetype of which is dated between the first century BC and the first century AD. Almost all the occurrences of οὐᾶ are in recensio G, usually dated between the first and the second century AD; the other recensio, W (probably going back to the fourth century AD), on the other (...) hand deliberately aims to eliminate the word οὐᾶ. Analysing in detail the use of this exclamatory particle in G and looking at the parallels (especially in Epictetus), we date G to the second century AD (probably its first half) and argue in support of the traditional view that it is extremely close - both chronologically and textually - to the lost archetype.
