“Keeping the heart”: Natural affection in Joseph Butler's approach to virtue.Sarah Moses - 2009 - Journal of Religious Ethics 37 (4):613-629.
This essay considers eighteenth-century Anglican thinker Joseph Butler's view of the role of natural emotions in moral reasoning and action. Emotions such as compassion and resentment are shown to play a positive role in the moral life by motivating action and by directing agents toward certain good objects—for example, relief of misery and justice. For Butler, moral virtue is present when these natural affections are kept in proper proportion by the "superior" principles of the moral life—conscience, self-love, and benevolence—which involve (...)

    The Bible and the Caesurae of Time.Stéphane Mosès - 2007 - Naharaim 1 (1):1-14.
I The Sabbath The Sabbath, the sabbatical year, and the jubilee are all fundamental Biblical commandments which have in common the fact that they structure time according to the same original rhythm of six units of work followed by a unit of rest. In fact, here it is a question of one and the same principle applied successively to three temporal cycles: the succession of days, the succession of years, and the succession of epochs. The Sabbath, the basic temporal unit, (...)

The Ethics of “Recognition”: Rowan Williams’s Approach to Moral Discernment in the Christian Community.Sarah Moses - 2015 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 35 (1):147-165.
While he was archbishop of Canterbury from 2002 to 2012, the scholar and theologian Rowan Williams faced divisive controversy over ethical issues such as human sexuality, women's ordination, and the treatment of religious minorities. This essay presents a selective retrieval of Williams's approach to communal disagreement as an important contribution of the Anglican tradition to the future of Christian ethics. Williams's concept of ethical discernment as an exercise in "recognition" offers a way for communities to approach differences as fostering constructive (...)
