Mystagogy and the Mystagogic method used by the Holy Fathers has been studied by theology, catechesis and liturgy, becoming an inspiration and model for christian education, especially in liturgical and sacramental theology. Mystagogy is the art of leading the faithful into the celebrated mystery, revealing it through each rite, gesture and symbol. The celebration itself provides codes and keys to enable the catechumens, neophytes and faithful to discover, little by little, the mystery that is celebrated there. Cyril of Jerusalem is one of the very important witnesses of faith in the East in the fourth century. He is the author of the Catecheses, which contain the content of the catechumenal and mystagogical teaching in Jerusalem. They are an excellent example of how to transmit Christian doctrine to candidates for Christianity and confirm it in the newly baptized. However, the basic method used by Cyril to convey his message is the use of biblical texts. The present study will (...) show the motivation for using biblical references in two mystagogical catecheses on the Eucharist, i.e. Catechesis 22 and Catechesis 23. Their author emphasizes the formation of deep faith and Christian formation of the spirit in the audience. The analysis of the content of these catecheses also shows the principle of the catechist invoking biblical texts based on the active or passive involvement of participants in the liturgical rite. Secondary reasons for the use of quotations or paraphrases from the holy books of the Bible are also highlighted. (shrink)

Since Karl Rahner, mystagogia has been considered one of the Christian pastoral practices which can approach the need felt for experimental faith. Practical theologians who have indulged in the new mystagogia have placed its foundation in the mystagogical practices of third and fourth century church fathers. It seems as though the authority of the church fathers is used in defense of the legitimacy of mystagogia in our time. In this article, the patristic foundation of the new mystagogia is studied. In (...) this way, the context, contents and methods of current mystagogia are compared to the practices of the church fathers. It appears that Christian mystagogia is understood as a form of initiation into personal faith and the Christian community. In this, the social context plays a part. The initiation is also connected to a process of conversion, where the patristic mystagogia is but a phase, while the new mystagogia can be seen as a process in its own right. In contents and method, mystagogia emphasizes theology, rites and catechesis. The elaboration of these items occurs differently with the church fathers than with modern theologians. These differences between patristic mystagogia and the current time conjure up questions concerning modern pastorate. These questions will lead to a further analysis of current mystagogia. (shrink)

In this contribution, the mystagogic engagement with Bible texts is considered. Good and bad reasons for drawing on the Bible are considered, both within personal and cultural frameworks. Different exegetical procedures are taken into review to inform a discussion of particularly the mystagogic engagement with the text. The latter is characterised by seeking faith from the biblical texts. For theological reasons, historical exegesis is proposed as particularly suited to mystagogic facilitation. Cronin, Patrick Mystagogy is the fourth period of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This article traces its development since the reforms of Vatican II.

Cronin, Patrick An empirical research project was conducted in the Archdiocese of Adelaide to investigate parish practices of mystagogy in the period after Easter for those involved in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This research established, by statistical and qualitative analysis, support for the thesis of a positive correlation between the quality of mystagogy offered at the parish level, and on-going participation of the newly received in parish life over subsequent years. The data gathering instruments consisted of (...) three questionnaires which were developed and delivered to parishes at the end of the mystagogy period in 2010. This enabled three sets of data to be collected retrospectively from RCIA teams for the period 2008 to 2010 inclusive. Two sets of data from the parish teams were used for ranking purposes and subsequent statistical analysis, while the third set of data from the neophytes and newly-received was used for qualitative analysis. This paper discusses some of the analyses of these sets of data and argues for the utility of empirical research as a source for evidencebased enhancements to ministry practice. (shrink)

In the early centuries of the nascent Church, we find a fountain experience lived by the Church at its beginnings: mystagogy. In this period of the Church’s history, the pedagogy which inspires the Church Fathers is mystagogy, that is, the pedagogy of Mystery. We believe that in the mystagogy experience, lived in the Church in the 3rd and 4th centuries, one finds a fruitful fountain which may be paradigmatic with regard to the contemporary religious experiences. We invite the reader to (...) walk with us along the pedagogy that is characteristic of the early centuries of the Christian route: mystagogy. Mystagogy reaches us as fountain pedagogy, which may be paradigmatic for an opening process and dialogue with the new subjectivities and intersubjectivities under construction. The mystagogy experienced in the early days of Christianity becomes a theological place which dialogues with our times, a dialogue between the fountain theology, foremost, and the theology of nowadays, a second reflection. Acreditamos que na experiência mistagógica, vivida na Igreja nos séculos III e IV, encontra-se uma fonte fecunda que pode ser paradigmática em relação às experiências religiosas contemporâneas. Such exegesis aimed to aid the reader to live the martyrdom required in ordinary life and beyond that, if necessary, with mental anguish, physical torture, and even death on behalf of Christ. Before examining More's work, I first situate this discussion within the broader conversation concerning modern (...) biblical interpretation- in particular the notion of senses of Scripture - therein explaining how I shall be using terms like mystagogy and martyrdom in this article. I shall then examine More's spiritual exegesis of Jesus' passion narratives, paying particular attention to the agony in the garden. This article focuses on the implications of modernity for human culpability and moral responsibility. Although the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is most often approached theologically and pastorally, this article is intended as an answer to Pope Benedict XVI's call to explore catechesis through new lenses by adopting a psychological therapeutic approach. As such, this article will examine how the rejection of religious ascription to God for defining and determining the good and re-ascribing it to humanity leads to a (...) rupture and the psychological conditions of anxiety, depression, and melancholia. The article will go on to argue for a Lacanian reading of Thomas Aquinas’ definition of the good and how the Thomistic understanding provides a more comprehensive approach to determining culpability and overcoming the associated fear which leads to anxiety, depression, and melancholia. Rymarz, Richard A significant challenge facing the Catholic Church today is the breakdown in traditional catechetical structures such as the close connection between parish, school and family. A consequence of this is a decline in the number of pathways open to Catholics who wish to strengthen their religious commitment. In light of this a pertinent question is: How can new structures support catechesis? This paper explores the role that New Ecclesial Communities can play in catechesis in a changed (...) cultural milieu. A number of features of these groups are discussed in relation to supporting plausibility. Some of these features include the establishment of reinforcing boundaries and providing an ongoing sense of involvement in a supportive moral community. (shrink)

The principal aim of Wetsel's study is to identify the potential interlocutor for whom Pascal intended his Pensées. Wetsel begins by stating his belief that, despite the fragmentary state of the Pensées, Pascal had clearly intended to revise and organize his thoughts into a "finished apology of the Christian religion". Those unfamiliar with the current state of Pascalian studies in North America will be surprised to learn how controversial is such a thesis. In this Derridian era, with its endless fascination (...) with discontinuity and fragmentation, a practically subatomic reading of the Pensées has become de rigueur. Wetsel's book is an unabashed return to the historicocritical tradition. Chapter 1 exposes the principal anti-Christian theses current in midseventeenth-century Paris, centering on the works of philosophes libertins such as La Mothe le Vayer and Gabriel Naud. More radical atheistic works, such as those of Cyrano de Bergerac, are also discussed at length. Wetsel attempts to demonstrate that Pascal is not addressing these libertins érudits, whose arguments against Christianity leave hardly any trace in the Pensées. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the "skeptical religion" popular in seventeenth-century France. Wetsel maintains that this deism with neo-Pelagian elements, essentially the religion of the honnête homme, is the disbelief of those whom Pascal wishes to convert. The following chapter deals with the most important of the unorthodox versions of the Genesis story advanced during the Classical period in France, the works of Isaac de la Peyrère. Wetsel does not propose that Pascal, though familiar with the Pre-Adamite theory of La Peyrère, intended a specific refutation of this author. Rather he believes that a general examination of seventeenth-century heterodoxy provides the fundamental historical context essential for understanding Pascal's defense of orthodoxy. (shrink)

This book addresses a lacuna in scholarship concerning Hannah Arendt's Augustinian heritage that has predominantly focused on her early work. It de-canonises the sources that political theology has appealed to by shifting the interpretive focus to her mature treatment in The Life of the Mind. Arendt's initial criticism of Augustinian desiring is that it generates worldlessness. In her later works, Arendt develops a more nuanced reading of the movements of thinking, desiring, and loving in her engagement with Augustine. This study (...) attends to these movements and inspects the spatio-temporal framework which structure Arendt's conception of the political. The author assesses the claim that Arendt's conception of the political is drawn from a pedagogy of desiring and thinking from Augustine severed from his mystagogy. Although respecting the method of political theory, the author contends that Arendt's severing of Augustinian pedagogy from mystagogy brings her to an insurmountable aporia. Instead, the author embeds these pedagogical practices within Augustine's theology and suggests how that aporia might be overcome and used to develop a mystagogy for contemporary political life. This paper discusses the irruption of the digital faithful generation of Z in the Indonesian Catholic church and its disruption to citizenship catechesis. The discussion of citizenship catechesis will fall short if we still fixate on the classic definitions of catechesis, the method of catechesis, and the profile of catechists in the apostolic exhortation Cateceshi Tradendae (1979). The predigital world conditions ideas about them. An in-depth discourse on citizenship catechesis needs to depart from the digital (...) faithful generation of Z irrupting in the Indonesian Catholic Church. 'Irruption', according to the liberation theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, refers to the presence of people who previously lived at the underside of history. Previously being absented, they transform into the subject of history. Irruption is also an ecclesial process. The generation of Z has emerged in the history of the Indonesian Catholic church as homo religiosus digitalis. They bring the disruptive spirit of the digital era to the body of the Catholic church. As digital integrators, they are open to incorporating faith in their lives. Based on their autobiography, homo religiosus digitalis Z lives a connective pedagogy with distinctive characteristics from predigital believers. Their irruption shakes the identity of the catechist and their vocation to "teach the lesson of the faith" to today's disciples of Christ. The irruption of Z's digital faithful generation encourages the further exploration of new methods for citizenship catechesis in the contemporary Indonesian context. (shrink)
