  5. Introduction: Athens and Jerusalem through a Different Lens.Danielle Celermajer - 2010 - Thesis Eleven 102 (1):3-5.
As a political thinker nurtured in early 20th-century German, Hannah Arendt is most often identified with the Greek philosophical tradition. This article argues that the crisis in reality that threw her into politics also, though unacknowledgedly, threw her into ‘Jewish modes of thinking’ as an alternative source where she found the Greek tradition lacking. This claim is controversial, given Arendt’s vehement criticisms of any recourse to the absolute, or metaphysical truths in the realm of politics. Nevertheless, and consistent with a (...)

The Bible and Modernity: Reflections on Leo Strauss.John Ranieri - 2004 - Contagion: Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture 11 (1):55-87.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:THE BIBLE AND MODERNITY: REFLECTIONS ON LEO STRAUSS John Ranieri Seton Hall University espondingto the criticisms made by Eric Voegelin and Alexandre Lojeve ofhis book On Tyranny, Leo Strauss wonders whether the attempt to restore classical social science is not, perhaps, Utopian, "since it implies that the classical orientation has not been made obsolete by the triumph ofthe biblical orientation" (Strauss 1991, 177-178). In similar fashion Strauss remarks (...)

Leo Strauss’s “Jerusalem and Athens” (1950): Three Lectures Delivered at Hillel House, Chicago.David Kretz, Hannes Kerber & Laurenz Denker - 2022 - Journal for the History of Modern Theology/Zeitschrift für Neuere Theologiegeschichte 29 (1):133-173.
For the first time, this edition presents Leo Strauss’s Hillel House lecture series on “Jerusalem and Athens.” The three lectures, delivered in the fall of 1950, investigate the agreement, disagreement, and conflict between the biblical and the philosophic “ways of life”: “Philosophy in the full sense is [...] incompatible with the biblical way of life. Philosophy and the Bible are the alternatives or the antagonists in the drama of the human soul. Each of the two antagonists claims to (...)

Between Athens and Jerusalem: Western otherness in the thought of Leo Strauss and Hannah Arendt.Grant Havers - 2004 - The European Legacy 9 (1):19-29.
In understanding the meaning of the West, twentieth‐century political philosophers Hannah Arendt and Leo Strauss called for a return to “Athens” (classical political philosophy) in order to address the “crisis of the West,” a loss of a sense of legitimate and stable political authority which, in their view, constitutes a nihilistic threat to Western democracy. The only way for the West to escape this nihilistic crisis is to return to Plato and Aristotle. Implicit in this critique is the belief that (...)

Athens and Jerusalem: the philosophical critique of Christianity in late antiquity and the enlightenment.Winfried Schröder - 2022 - Boston: Brill.
The present study, for the first time, provides a comparative analysis of the objections raised against Christianity by late antique pagan philosophers (esp. Celsus in Alethes logos, Porphyry in Contra Christianos, and Julian the Apostate in Contra Gali-laeos) and Enlightenment philosophers and freethinkers and examines the impact of pagan thinking on the critique of Christianity in the 16th to 18th centuries - in particular, on discussions concerning the authority of the Bible, biblical exegesis, the Christian concept of faith, religious (...)

Transcendental Idealism: What Jerusalem Has To Say to Königsberg.Mark Glouberman - 2010 - Dialogue 49 (1):25-51.

Biblical references in catecheses about the Holy Mass by Cyril of Jerusalem.Norbert Widok - 2022 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 115 (3):1083-1114.
Cyril of Jerusalem is one of the very important witnesses of faith in the East in the fourth century. He is the author of the Catecheses, which contain the content of the catechumenal and mystagogical teaching in Jerusalem. They are an excellent example of how to transmit Christian doctrine to candidates for Christianity and confirm it in the newly baptized. However, the basic method used by Cyril to convey his message is the use of biblical texts. The present (...)

Women’s voices of renewal within tradition: The women of the wall of jerusalem.Kim Treiger-Bar-Am - 2017 - Angelaki 22 (1):163-181.
Women’s voices are widely expressed in current movements of rejuvenation of Jewish traditions. These moves raise tensions within the religious world and the civil legal realm. In focus here is a much-debated instance: the nearly thirty-year effort by Jewish women to pray in a group in song and read from the Bible at the holy site of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. The group is called the Women of the Wall (WoW). In addition to the women's rights of (...)

The King and 'I': Agency and rationality in athens and jerusalem.M. Glouberman - 1997 - Ratio 10 (1):10–34.
Although Western culture draws substantively on Athens and Jerusalem, hostility tends to be shown towards Jerusalem from the philosophical wing. I attempt to correct the imbalance. Philosophy, I argue, arose in the Greek context because of a problem of self‐confidence. ‘Philosophical rationality’ cannot therefore be taken as normative for rationality generally. The contrast between the Jerusalemite and the Athenian views of self and of the contrasting estimates and explanations of the efficacy of the self’s agency is developed through (...)

Sanctuary schematics and temple ideology in the Hebrew Bible and Dead Sea Scrolls: The import of Numbers.Joshua J. Spoelstra - 2022 - HTS Theological Studies 78 (4):1–5.
The temple schematics in the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS), that is, New Jerusalem and Temple Scroll, has often been comparatively examined with the sanctuary structures in the Hebrew Bible (HB) (Ezk 40-48 and Num 2). Typically, in scholarship, the irreconcilable differences between all accounts (regarding the size, shape, name-gate ordering, etc.) is underscored, thus rendering a literary conundrum. This article argues that New Jerusalem and Temple Scroll drew from both Ezekiel 40-48 and Numbers 2 in different ways, (...)

    Remarks on Pragmatism.Wilhelm Jerusalem - 2022 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 58 (3):201-216.
Abstract:The "Remarks on Pragmatism" include two texts by Wilhelm Jerusalem that have never been published in English, in a translation by Daniel R. Huebner. This translation is supplemented with a few excerpts related to pragmatism from a 1910 English translation, by Charles Finley Sanders, of the fourth edition of Jerusalem's Introduction to Philosophy. For background information on Jerusalem, his legacy, and the current texts and translations, see Huebner's introductory essay in this issue.
