This book is devoted to a thorough analysis of the role that models play in the practise of physical theory. The authors, a mathematical physicist and a philosopher of science, appeal to the logicians’ notion of model theory as well as to the concepts of physicists.

This book presents the deterministic view of quantum mechanics developed by Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft. Dissatisfied with the uncomfortable gaps in the way conventional quantum mechanics meshes with the classical world, 't Hooft has revived the old hidden variable ideas, but now in a much more systematic way than usual. In this, quantum mechanics is viewed as a tool rather than a theory. The book presents examples of models that are classical in essence, but can be analysed by the (...) use of quantum techniques, and argues that even the Standard Model, together with gravitational interactions, might be viewed as a quantum mechanical approach to analysing a system that could be classical at its core. He shows how this approach, even though it is based on hidden variables, can be plausibly reconciled with Bell's theorem, and how the usual objections voiced against the idea of 'superdeterminism' can be overcome, at least in principle. This framework elegantly explains - and automatically cures - the problems of the wave function collapse and the measurement problem. Even the existence of an "arrow of time" can perhaps be explained in a more elegant way than usual. As well as reviewing the author's earlier work in the field, the book also contains many new observations and calculations. It provides stimulating reading for all physicists working on the foundations of quantum theory. (shrink)

Arif Ahmed has recently argued that causal decision theory is dynamically inconsistent and that we should therefore prefer evidential decision theory. However, the principal formulation of the evidential theory, Richard Jeffrey’s Logic of Decision, has a mixed record of its own when it comes to evaluating plans consistently across time. This note probes that neglected record, establishing the dynamic consistency of evidential decision theory within a restricted class of problems but then illustrating how evidentialists can fall into sequential incoherence outside (...) of this class. Uncovering the evidentialist’s own dynamic inconsistencies reveals, contra Ahmed, that sequential choice considerations do not significantly favor the evidentialist’s theory over the causalist’s. Many scientists believe that the universe, including the human brain, is governed by natural laws and that all can be explained by natural processes. In consequence, they believe that all events, including brain events, are determined. From this, they often conclude that free will cannot exist. I believe these views are mistaken and will present several lines of argument to support this position. I conclude that the operation of free will is compatible with determinism, can be explained by natural processes (...) and does not entail immaterial substance. (shrink)

Une philosophie originale, le pragmatisme, est bien née aux Etats-Unis au tournant du siècle. Elle n'était pas la première. Elle avait été précédée du transcendantalisme, version romantique du kantisme, qui en était la promesse. Le positivisme logique et la philosophie analytique d'origine européenne furent bien reçus aux Etats-Unis avant et après la seconde Guerre Mondiale, mais devinrent très vite " pragmatistes ", au point de donner aujourd'hui naissance à un nouveau pragmatisme, oublieux parfois peut-être de ses origines. L'accueil fait au (...) pragmatisme en Europe nous amène à poser la question du caractère américain du pragmatisme. Ne serait-il pas plutôt la nouvelle philosophie universelle? Universelle, parce que, expérimentale et démocratique, elle s'est substituée à l'impérialisme d'une réalité et d'une vérité supposées absolues, d'une métaphysique et d'une éthique imposées par le pouvoir, qu'il fût d'Etat ou d'Eglise? Universelle, parce qu'elle est porteuse d'espoir et qu'elle fournit les moyens intellectuel et matériel de le réaliser? (shrink)
