    The Body, Experience, and the History of Dream-Science in Artemidorus’ Oneirocritica.Calloway B. Scott - 2023 - Apeiron 56 (1):131-161.
The five books of Artemidorus of Ephesus’ Oneirocritica (c. second century CE) constitute the largest collection of divinatory dream-interpretations to survive from Graeco-Roman antiquity. This article examines Artemidorus’ contribution to longstanding medico-philosophical debates over the ontological and epistemic character of such dreams. As with wider Mediterranean traditions concerning premonitory dreams, Greeks and Romans popularly understood them as phenomena with origins exterior to the dreamer (e.g. a visitation of a god). Presocratic and Hippocratic thinkers, however, initiated an effort to (...)

The Interpretation of DreamsAn Ancient Dream Manual: Artemidorus’ The Interpretation of Dreams.Christophe Chandezon - 2020 - Kernos 33:342-346.

Delusion and Dream in Apuleius' Metamorphoses.Vered Lev Kenaan - 2004 - Classical Antiquity 23 (2):247-284.
Considering the absence of any ancient systematic approach to the reading of the novel, this paper turns to ancient dream hermeneutics as a valuable field of reference that can provide the theoretical framework for studying the ancient novel within its own cultural context. In introducing dream interpretation as one of the ancient novel's creative sources, this essay focuses on Apuleius' Metamorphoses. It explores the dream logic in Apuleius' novel by turning to such authorities as Heraclitus, Plato, Cicero, Artemidorus, and (...)

Truth in the late Foucault: antiquity, sexuality and psychoanalysis.Paul Allen Miller (ed.) - 2024 - New York, NY: Bloomsbury Academic.
The first full treatment of truth as a core philosophical concept in the late Foucault, this volume examines his work on the ancient world and the early church. Each essay features a deep examination as to how the topics of truth and sexuality intersect with and focus on Foucault's engagement with ancient philosophy and thought. Truth in the Late Foucault offers readings on Plato, Artemidorus, Cicero, Sophocles and the Stoics, and pays close attention to Cassian, Paulinus of Nola, and (...)

Maria Mavroudi, A Byzantine book on dream interpretation. The Oneirocriticon of Achmet and its Arabic sources.Dimitri Gutas - 2004 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 97 (2):606-610.
The Byzantine dreambook known in the tradition as The Oneirocriticon of Achmet has had a long and influential history both in its field and in scholarship. It is the longest of the eight surviving Byzantine books on dream interpretation, and most likely also the oldest. It was compiled during the Macedonian renaissance—specifically, the two termini of 843 and 1075 can be established—possibly in the reign of Leo VI (r. 886–912), to whom it may have been dedicated, and possibly through the (...)

    ‘Breast is Best’: Catullus 64.18.Richard Hunter - 1991 - Classical Quarterly 41 (01):254-.
Catullus' use of nutrices for the Nereids' breasts in line 18 of Poem 64 is not perhaps the most important problem in the poem, but it is not without interest and may have significance beyond its narrow context. This ‘weird preciosity’ has been integrated into a wider reading by Francis Cairns, who interestingly drew attention to Artemidorus 2.37–8 where to dream of Aphrodite emerging from the sea and naked as far as the ζώνη is a good omen for sea-travellers (...)

What could Paul have meant by ‘against nature’ (παρὰ φύσιν) as written in Romans 1:26? Striving for the well-being and health of all people. [REVIEW]Andries G. Van Aarde - 2021 - HTS Theological Studies 77 (2).
The point of departure of this article is postmodern philosopher Michel Foucault’s ‘archaeological analysis’ of the history of sexuality, seen from the lens of the South African philosopher Johann Beukes. Foucault points out that since the circulation of the so-called handbooks on penance in the 6th century CE, same-gender sex was seen as a punishable sin. With regard to perspectives before this period, Foucault reflects specifically on the contribution of the Christian theologian Augustine, and particularly Augustine’s interpretation of the Greek (...)
