En este artículo se examinan los móviles teóricos por los que Filón de Alejandría ha tomado en préstamo uno de los famosos tópicos empleados por Platón, a saber, el motivo de la ‘inspiración divina’. Para explorar este motivo, un lugar clave en el corpus platónico es el diálogo temprano Ión. Allí la inspiración divina es origen de cierta modalidad específica de interpretación. Un estudio inter-textual previo detecta que Filón ha hecho un uso considerable de ese diálogo, asumiendo de él específicamente (...) el motivo de la inspiración. Al atender a tales textos se descubre, además, que ese tópico ha sido introducido tanto por Filón como por Platón en el marco de sus respectivas reflexiones hermenéuticas. La atención al tópico de la inspiración divina desemboca, pues, en el análisis de las continuidades y disrupciones que presentan esos dos modelos hermenéuticos. En la reflexión filoniana la dignidad del libro inspirado lleva a priorizar ‘lo que el texto dice’, de manera que ‘el texto no se discute, se interpreta’. Platón, por su parte, considera que la hermenéutica no puede detenerse ante la canonización de un libro, sino que ha de incorporar previamente el conocimiento y discusión del correlato externo al que un texto se refiere. En este trabajo se defiende que, contra lo que inicialmente podría parecer, ambos modelos no presentan, sin embargo, una disrupción sustancial. (shrink)

What role, if any, does dialectic play in Aristotle’s epistemology in the Topics? In this paper I argue that it does play a role, but a role that is independent of endoxa. In the first section, I sketch the case for thinking that dialectic plays a distinctively epistemological role—not just a methodological role, or a merely instrumental role in getting episteme. In the second section, I consider three ways it could play that role, on two of which endoxa play at (...) least a co-starring role. But in the third section, I argue that endoxa don’t play that co-starring role, by arguing for a deflationary account of what endoxa are. For that reason, the third view emerges as the most plausible; but the third view is, I’ll suggest, Platonic. (shrink)

Uncertainty is a feeling of anxiety and a part of culture since the dawn of civilization. Civilizations have invented numerous ways to cope with uncertainty, statistics is one of those technologies. The rhetoric as the discourse of investment theory uncovers that the theory of statistics applied is a blind spot in the current conversation about investment theory and practice. Probability and prediction in investment theory look like a tying sale, since investment theory is founded on stochastical predictability. The proof of (...) unpredictability, however, lies outside the paradigm of statistics, because statistics assumes that the substrate, that produces probability outcomes, is stable. The theory of objective probabilities founds the Capital Asset Pricing Model but does not stochastically predict, and neither do Markowitz’s subjective probabilities for his portfolio theory. Statistical models for investing have a function, despite that they cannot predict: in essence, the models try to quantify statistically the equity, the fairness of the distribution of risk and return between parties involved. In the dissertation, a lot of ideas to change finance have had attention: the alternative statistical theory of Mandelbrot, bubble theory, political finance, the analysis of rhetoric, the analysis of culture, innovative practices, ethics in the form of virtue and value ethics, and the history of finance. How to make the culture of finance more heterogeneous? That starts with awareness of the current problems, the introduction of multiform metaphors for investment theory, and handling the ambiguity of theory uncertainty, by presenting, explaining and elaborating the alternatives. El artículo ofrece una interpretación de la controversial y aparentemente inaceptable caracterización de la poesía desarrollada por Platón en la República. Los objetivos principales de la discusión son: aclarar las motivaciones de dicha caracterización, desentrañar los múltiples y discontinuos argumentos que la componen, y evaluar críticamente sus aciertos y sus límites. Se concluye que no todas las posturas que adopta Platón frente a la poesía son insostenibles, y que cuando sí lo son las razones para ello resultan particularmente esclarecedoras. The (...) article offers an interpretation of the controversial and apparently unacceptable characterization of poetry developed in Plato's Republic. The main objectives of the discussion are: to clarify the motivations for such characterization, to disentangle the various and discontinuous arguments that compose it, and to critically evaluate its limitations and the extent of its defensibility. It is concluded that not all the positions adopted by Plato with respect to poetry are unsustainable, and that when they are, this is due to reasons which result particularly revealing. (shrink)
