Galvano Della Volpe was the dominant philosopher of Italian Marxism for twenty years after the Liberation. His most important book was a work of aesthetic theory—Critique of Taste. Della Volpe, proponent of a robust materialism in all his writings, was concerned to rehabilitate the inherently rational and intellectual nature of art. Opposing both the sociological reductionism of Plekhanov or Lukács, and the formalist irrationalism of Croce or New Criticism, Della Volpe's aim was to demonstrate that conceptual meaning (...) is always inseparable from aesthetic effect. Whether he is discussing Pindar or Góngora, Cleanth Brooks or Roland Barthes, Goethe or Mallarmé, Della Volpe is always challenging, always illuminating. Is behavioral integration a necessary feature of belief in folk psychology? Our data from over 5,000 people across 26 samples, spanning 22 countries suggests that it is not. Given the surprising cross-cultural robustness of our findings, we argue that the types of evidence for the ascription of a belief are, at least in some circumstances, lexicographically ordered: assertions are first taken into account, and when an agent sincerely asserts that p, nonlinguistic behavioral evidence is disregarded. Some criticism of Della Volpe to the Lukacsian esthetics is presented. According to the Italian philosopher, a materialistic philosophy of art could not be established upon the concept of intuition. The basic categories should be the category of "cognitive plenitude" and the category of "specific language". It is, thus, proposed that the Della volpian system be taken into consideration as the true starting point for the reflexions upon art, upon the relationships between the work and the society, upon the (...) degree of knowledge produced by the artistic universe.São apresentadas algumas críticas de Della Volpe à estética lukacsiana. Segundo o filósofo italiano, uma filosofia da arte materialista não poderia estar fundamentada no conceito de intuição. As categorias básicas seriam a de "plenitude cognoscitiva" e de "linguagens específicas". Assim, propõe-se que o sistema dellavolpiano seja levado em consideração, como verdadeiro ponto de partida para as reflexões sobre arte, sobre as relações entre a obra e a sociedade e sobre o grau de saber que o universo artístico produz.
