In my essay I try to explore a parallel between Herder and Humboldt and some modern investigations into the origin of language. Herder favors a pan-psychistic account of nature, and he proposes a theory maintaining that only language can do the business to mediate between the abstract reasoning of man and the content delivered to him by his senses. Humboldt, in his turn, prefers a Kantian transcendental analysis of the form of language, the form being dependent on man’s mental activity (...) and therefore dynamical in character. We may summarize this result in the thesis that Herder is speculating on the origin of language whereas Humboldt attempts to give a theory of the origination of language by synthetic acts. Problems connected with a narrative style of theorizing can also be demonstrated by contrasting two modern authors, namely R. G. Millikan and M. Tomasello. (shrink)

The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben is having an increasingly significant impact on Anglo-American political theory. His most prominent intervention to date is the powerful reassessment of sovereignty and the politics of life and death laid out in his multivolume _Homo Sacer_ project. Agamben argues that in both the modern world and the ancient, politics inevitably involves a sovereign decision that bans some individuals from the political and human communities. For Agamben, the Nazi concentration camps—in which some inmates are reduced to (...) a form of living death—are not a political aberration but instead the place where this essential political decision about life most clearly reveals itself. Engaging specifically with _Homo Sacer_, the essays in this collection draw out and contend with the wide-ranging implications of Agamben’s radical and controversial interpretation of modern political life. The contributors analyze Agamben’s thought from the perspectives of political theory, philosophy, jurisprudence, and the history of law. They consider his work not only in relation to that of his major interlocutors—Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault, Carl Schmitt, Walter Benjamin, and Martin Heidegger—but also in relation to the thought of Plato, Pindar, Heraclitus, Descartes, Kafka, Bataille, and Derrida. The essayists’ approaches are varied, as are their ultimate evaluations of the cogency and accuracy of Agamben’s arguments. ZusammenfassungDa die zuletzt von Shimony, Lehman und Kemeny ausgebaute Begründung der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie durch Zurückführung auf den Begriff der Wette im wesentlichen nur die Axiome von Kolmogoroff liefert, welche für die Anwendungen nicht ausreichen, muss man nach einem neuen Prinzip suchen, um weitere Axiome zu gewinnen. Als solches bietet sich an ein Einfachheitsprinzip, welches besagt, dass eine einfachere Hypothese die wahrscheinlichere ist. Es wird kritisch berichtet über verschiedene Versuche, die in Münster insbesondere von Kiesow und W. Oberschelp unternommen worden sind, (...) um dieses Einfachheitsprinzip zu präzisieren durch eine exakte Definition der Einfachheit, welche im wesentlichen als sprachliche Einfachheit aufgefasst wird.RésuméRécemment Shimony, Lehman et Kemeny ont développé une fondation de la théorié de la probabilite au moyen d'une réduction au concept de la gageure, qui permet de comprendre essentiellement les axiomes donnés par Kolmogoroff, mais pas d'autres axiomes dont on se sert souvent pour légitimer les applications de la théorie de la probabilité. Il est done nécessaire de chercher un nouveau principe pour motiver ces autres axiomes. On peut réussir en utilisant un principe de simplicité disant que la probabilité d'une hypothése diminue avec sa complication. Un récit et une critique sont donnés concernant plusieurs recherches faites à MuUnster, spécialement par M. Kiesow et M. W. Oberschelp, pour préciser la notion de la simplicité en la réduisant à certaines propriétés syntactiques des propositions.Shimony, Lehman and Kemeny recently developed a foundation of the theory of confirmation by reduction to the concept of rational betting. This procedure yields essentially only the axioms first stated by Kolmogoroff. It is well known that these are not sufficient for application. Thus it is necessary to search for a new principle if one wants to motivate new axioms. This can be done by a principle of simplicity, which expresses that the probability of a hypothesis increases with its degree of simplicity. A critical survey is given about several attempts which have been tried in Münster especially by Kiesow and W. Oberschelp with the aim to make the notion of simplicity precise. The simplicity is reduced to syntactical properties of propositions. (shrink)

Die Veröffentlichung dieser Arbeit wurde durch mißliche Umstände ver­ zögert; sie wird durch die Übernahme in den Verlag Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn nunmehr ermöglicht. Trotzdem braucht im Augenblick nichts hinzugefügt werden. Eine soeben erschienene Arbeit von O. Heckmann, P. Jordan 1 und W. Fricke ) stellt erst den ersten Teil einer noch im Fluß befindlichen Diskussion von Lösungen der in diesem Büchlein aufgestellten allgemeinen Feldgleichungen dar. In dieser Darstellung wird ein kurzer Überblick über die neueren Ergeb­ nisse der projektiven (...) Relativitätstheorie seit dem Erscheinen der schönen 2 Zusammenfassung von O. Veblen ) im Jahre 1933 gegeben. Der wesent­ lichste Schritt in dieser Weiterentwicklung wurde von P. Jordan im Jahre 1944 getan. Die allgemeine affine (Einsteinsehe) Relativitätstheorie wird als be­ kannt vorausgesetzt. Die projektive Theorie wird aber von Grund· auf mit Einschluß der Jordansehen Erweiterung entwickelt. Eine eingehendere Übersicht über den Inhalt, der die Ergebnisse einiger Arbeiten von P. J or­ dan, Cl. Müll e r und dem Verfasser sowie noch unveröffentlichte Ergeb­ nisse enthält, findet der Leser im ersten einleitenden Abschnitt. Ganz besonders herzlich möchte ich Herrn P.
