Erasing Tracks: Longchenpa and Bataille on Praxis—Its Negation and Liberation.Gidi Ifergan - 2016 - Philosophy East and West 66 (1):177-193.
At first glance, there seems to be a striking similarity in the notion of innate and free natural awareness of the fourteenth-century Tibetan philosopher and teacher Long-chenpa, and the notion of Inner Experience of the twentieth-century French philosopher Georges Bataille. For Longchenpa, innate natural awareness is synonymous with Buddha-nature—the pristine awareness that directly perceives reality as it is, without the mediation of beliefs, labels, or any other means stemming from the individual’s conditioned existence. Abiding in that state gives one the (...)

    Hans Blumenberg’s philosophical project: metaphorology as anthropology.Pini Ifergan - 2015 - Continental Philosophy Review 48 (3):359-377.
Philosophical anthropology emerges, partly at least, by dissatisfied and critical followers of Husserl’s phenomenology, such as Max Scheler and the young Martin Heidegger. They were dissatisfied with what they saw as a disregard of the concrete human being as an essential part of phenomenological analysis. They tried instead to claim that philosophy must search for, and anchor, its foundations exclusively in the human being, not as an abstract entity, but as an existential, concrete, physical being. In this specific philosophical, as (...)

The story of cell fusion: Big lessons from little worms.Gidi Shemer & Benjamin Podbilewicz - 2003 - Bioessays 25 (7):672-682.
The ability of two or more cells to unite to form a new syncytial cell has been utilized in metazoans throughout evolution to form many complex organs, such as muscles, bones and placentae. This requires migration, recognition and adhesion between cells together with fusion of their plasma membranes and rearrangement of their cytoplasmic contents. Until recently, understanding of the mechanisms of cell fusion was restricted to fusion between enveloped viruses and their target cells. The identification of new factors that take (...)

Blumenberg: on bringing myth to an end.Pini Ifergan - 2023 - History of European Ideas 49 (8):1236-1251.
This paper offers an account of Hans Blumenberg’s unique approach to myth. §1 shows that Blumenberg’s thought on myth, like his thought on metaphor, has been widely misconstrued. §2 argues that Blumenberg’s account of myth should be seen as part of the discussion of non-conceptuality. It explains that Blumenberg, invoking conceptuality’s epistemic limitations, challenges modern philosophy’s denigration of non-conceptuality. Blumenberg argues that conceptuality should not be understood in terms of mathematical-scientific rationality, but more broadly, and claims that myth and metaphor (...)

Hegel's discovery of the philosophy of spirit: autonomy, alienation, and the ethical life: the Jena lectures 1802-1806.Pini Ifergan - 2014 - New York: Palgrave-Macmillan.
This exploration of Hegel's critique of the individualistic ethos of modernity and the genesis of his alternative vision traces the conceptual schemes Hegel experimented with to show how he settled on the concepts of 'ethical life' (Sittlichkeit) and Spirit as the means for overcoming subjectivity and domination.

    Historias perversas en fábulas fársicas.Claudia Gidi - 2022 - Valenciana 30:283-309.

On the relation between indistinguishability of identical particles and (anti)symmetry of the wave function in quantum mechanics.Willem M. Muynck & Gidi P. Liempd - 1986 - Synthese 67 (3):477 - 496.
Two different concepts of distinguishability are often mixed up in attempts to derive in quantum mechanics the (anti)symmetry of the wave function from indistinguishability of identical particles. Some of these attempts are analyzed and shown to be defective. It is argued that, although identical particles should be considered as observationally indistinguishable in (anti)symmetric states, they may be considered to be conceptually distinguishable. These two notions of (in)distinguishability have quite different physical origins, the former one being related to observations while the (...)

Plant coloration undermines herbivorous insect camouflage.Simcha Lev-Yadun, Amots Dafni, Moshe A. Flaishman, Moshe Inbar, Ido Izhaki, Gadi Katzir & Gidi Ne'eman - 2004 - Bioessays 26 (10):1126-1130.
The main point of our hypothesis “coloration undermines camouflage” is that many color patterns in plants undermine the camouflage of invertebrate herbivores, especially insects, thus exposing them to predation and causing them to avoid plant organs with unsuitable coloration, to the benefit of the plants. This is a common case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” and a visual parallel of the chemical signals that plants emit to call wasps when attacked by caterpillars. Moreover, this is also (...)

A sheep in wolf's clothing: do carrion and dung odours of flowers not only attract pollinators but also deter herbivores?Simcha Lev-Yadun, Gidi Ne'eman & Uri Shanas - 2009 - Bioessays 31 (1):84-88.
Carrion and dung odours of various flowers have traditionally been considered an adaptation for attracting the flies and beetles that pollinate them. While we accept the role of such odours in pollinator attraction, we propose that they may also have another, overlooked, anti‐herbivore defensive function. We suggest that such odours may deter mammalian herbivores, especially during the critical period of flowering. Carrion odour is a good predictor for two potential dangers to mammalian herbivores: (1) pathogenic microbes, (2) proximity of carnivores. (...)

  19. A life-cycle approach highlights the nutritional and environmental superiority of agroecology over conventional farming.Alik Pelman, Jerke De Vries, Sigal Tepper, Gidi Eshel, Yohay Carmel & Alon Shepon - forthcoming - Plos Sustainability and Transformation.
Providing equitable food security for a growing population while minimizing environmental impacts and enhancing resilience to climate shocks is an ongoing challenge. Here, we quantify the resource intensity, environmental impacts and nutritional output of a small (0.075 ha) low-input subsistence Mediterranean agroecological farm in a developed nation that is based on intercropping and annual crop rotation. The farm provides one individual, the proprietor, with nutritional self-sufficiency (adequate intake of an array of macro- and micro-nutrients) with limited labor, no synthetic fertilizers (...)
