    A. J. Greimas in the world: travels, translations, transmissions.Thomas F. Broden - 2021 - Semiotica 2021 (243):187-228.
This essay adopts a semiotic perspective focused on practices of communication, movement, and translation to examine the global impact of A. J. Greimas and his oeuvre. The linguist and semiotician’s lecture trips abroad, the number and provenance of international students in his Paris seminar, and the chronology and linguistic geography of translations of his work help describe, gauge, and explain the dissemination and development of his ideas throughout the world. His project has engendered distinctive appropriations and at times productive (...)

    A. J. Greimas’ historical lexicology (1945–1958) and the place of the lexeme in his work.Thomas F. Broden - 2017 - Sign Systems Studies 45 (1-2):104-119.
In his first research project, Greimas developed and applied new methods in the historical lexicology of modern French. His theoretical articles formulate a sociological approach that analyses vocabulary as a history of culture, illustrated in his two dissertations on fashion in 1830. In the 1980s, from the perspective of his semiotics, Greimas dismissed his early scholarship as failed experiments that taught him what not to do. In the changed epistemological context of the 21st century, the work appears as (...)

    The semiotics of A. J. Greimas.Eero Tarasti - 2017 - Sign Systems Studies 45 (1-2):33-53.
The essay deals with the formation of the Greimassian thought from its earliest origins in his young years at Kaunas University, i.e. his connections with Wilhelm Sesemann, Lev Karsavin and Russian formalism, to the rise of structuralism in Paris. The Paris School approach stems from Semantique structurale (1967) leading to the ‘third semiotic revolution’, as Greimas called it, by the invention of the modalities. This made his method close to even analytic philosophy and modal logics. In both, a linguistic (...)

  13. Comparative Analysis of Semiotic Approaches to the Notion of Textual Communication Between an Author and a Reader (A. J. Greimas, F. Rastier, J. Kristeva).Olena Verbivska - 2022 - Bulletin of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Philosophy 2 (7):5-9.
This article concentrates on a couple of semiotic approaches working out, on the one hand, the mediated character of reducing interpretative trajectories to the actual translation into the language of narratives (A. J. Greimas) or the language of textuality (F. Rastier), and, on the other, the direct, apparently unmediated passage to the visceral physicality of the verbal signifying system, which make semantic and syntactic components perfunctory to interpretation in a way (J. Kristeva). Greimassian universal narrative grammar dismantles signifying units, (...)

Dancing all the way to the stage by way of the stadium: on the iconicity and plasticity of actions.Göran Sonesson - 2022 - Semiotica 2022 (248):321-349.
In the sense of phenomenology, actions are special cases of acts of consciousness. Within semiotics, first Jan Mukařovský and then A. J. Greimas have established, in different terms, a distinction between instrumental actions and actions which carry their meaning in themselves. But this is insufficient to account for the variety of actions which comprises everything from the creation of artefacts, dance, sporting events, theatre, rituals, and much else. Already those actions mentioned relate in different ways to instrumentality and intrinsic (...)

What Becomes of the Damned.R. A. J. Shields - 2022 - TheoLogica: An International Journal for Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology 8 (1).
Annihilationism provides a fruitful point of contact between philosophers and theologians for further reflection on nonexistence. In this paper I articulate a key commitment of annihilationism; namely, that some persons cease to exist. Such a commitment, I argue, amounts to the claim that some persons exist at time t and then do not exist at t+1, become ‘annihilated objects.’ Claims about annihilated objects induct the annihilationist into a wider realism/anti-realism debate about nonexistent objects. I survey some major viewpoints in this (...)

    USP7/HAUSP: A SUMO deubiquitinase at the heart of DNA replication.Veronique A. J. Smits & Raimundo Freire - 2016 - Bioessays 38 (9):863-868.
DNA replication is both highly conserved and controlled. Problematic DNA replication can lead to genomic instability and therefore carcinogenesis. Numerous mechanisms work together to achieve this tight control and increasing evidence suggests that post‐translational modifications (phosphorylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation) of DNA replication proteins play a pivotal role in this process. Here we discuss such modifications in the light of a recent article that describes a novel role for the deubiquitinase (DUB) USP7/HAUSP in the control of DNA replication. USP7 achieves this function (...)
