Objects of knowledge exist within material, immaterial, and conceptual worlds. Once the world is conceived from the perspective of others, the physical ontology of modern science no longer functions as a standard by which to understand other orderings of reality, whether from ethnographical or historical sources. Because premodern and non-western sources attest to a plurality of sciences practiced in accordance with different ways of worldmaking from that of the modern West, their study belongs to the history of science, the philosophy (...) of science, and the sociology of science, as well as the anthropology of science. In Worldmaking and Cuneiform Antiquity, Francesca Rochberg extends an anthropology of science to the historical world of cuneiform texts of ancient Babylonia. Exploring how Babylonian science has been understood, she proposes a new direction for scholarship by recognizing the world of ancient science, not as a less developed form of modern science, but as legitimate and real in its own right. An inscription composed in the Old Persian language and carved in the Old Persian cuneiform script on the tomb of Phirozshaw D. Saklatvala and his family in the Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City adds to the corpus of known ancient and modern inauthentic Old Persian texts. This article describes and illustrates the tomb, discusses the family for which it was built, presents a full illustrated edition of the text and philological commentary on it, and speculates on the identity (...) of its composer. This review-article of Martha Roth's Law Collections focuses on selected sections in the Laws of Ur-Namma, Eshnunna, Hammurabi, Lipit-Ishtar, and the Neo-Babylonian Laws. It discusses potentially misleading divisions of sections and problems of rendering the term awīlum (lú). It also asserts that students of law will benefit from Roth's translations for generations.

Résumé Bien que la documentation cunéiforme du Proche-Orient ancien soit composée essentiellement de textes administratifs, rédigés par les palais, les temples ou des particuliers, les pratiques de comptes en tant que telles ne suscitent en général pas l’intérêt des assyriologues. Ces derniers préfèrent traditionnellement subordonner leur étude à l’histoire quantitative ou bien à l’analyse archivistique. Pourtant, le programme d’histoire concrète de l’abstraction proposé par Jean-Claude Perrot invite à enquêter sur cet objet historique dans la perspective d’une histoire totale, où l’économique (...) pourrait expliquer le social et le politique. Il s’agit de mener de front, d’une part, une démarche réflexive sur la conception de la comptabilité par les historiens mais également par les professionnels des sciences de gestion, et d’autre part, une approche émique qui prendrait en considération les modes d’intellection, le rapport à la matérialité et les motivations d’ordre social et politique des Anciens.
