In order to provide context and ground for a future assessment of the manifold overlap and possible differences between the Humanistic Management Project and the Weltethos Project, this article offers a comprehensive assessment of the history, arguments, and relevance of the Weltethos Project as applied to economics and business. A literature review of foundational documents on “Weltethos” and “Weltethos for business” outlines essential elements and arguments from two main Weltethos Project pioneers. It first recounts how (...) its founder, the theologian Hans Küng, has launched a fruitful academic and public discourse spanning almost three decades since 1990, including the presentation of the Manifesto for a Global Economic Ethic by world leaders at a joint event with the UN Global Compact at the UN headquarters in New York in 2009, calling for business to serve human dignity. Then, the agenda of Claus Dierksmeier, Küng’s academic successor and a philosopher with foundational contributions to the Humanistic Management Project, is assessed both in regard to Weltethos motifs and Humanistic Management arguments, spanning from Dierksmeier’s conception of qualitative freedom as the foundation of unity in diversity to his effort to reframe economic theory and ethics, the inclusive and innovative practices of Humanistic Management, and to the capability approach. The article ends by highlighting how these two different approaches to Weltethos commitments converge in their care for human dignity, the idea of globally responsible freedom, and the capacity for dialogue as a learning process for creative change leadership. Wie konnen wir in einer Welt mit unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen, Uberzeugungen und Werten friedlich uberleben? Mit seinem Buch Projekt Weltethos begann Hans Kung 1990 ein Gesprach, das bis heute anhalt. Das Projekt Weltethos von Hans Küng, dem Tübinger katholischen Theologen für Ökumenische Theologie, ist ein religionswissenschaftliches Forschungsprojekt über den gegenwärtigen Stand der großen Weltreligionen und zugleich ein Beitrag zum Frieden stiftenden Dialog der Weltreligionen über gemeinsame ethische Grundlagen ihres jeweils religiös fundierten Ethos. Es geht also um Aufklärung über die aktuelle Lage der Religionen, um Erinnerung an ihre gemeinsamen Werte und Normen und um eine Kritik an den Religionen, insofern sie selbst gegen ihre gemeinsamen ethischen Werte und Normen verstoßen.

Küng fordert seit Jahrzehnten ein gemeinschaftliches Weltethos aller Religionen als Voraussetzung für den Weltfrieden. Vorliegendes schmales Handbuch bietet äeinen kompakten Überblick über Idee, Begründung und Umsetzung des Weltethosä.

Početkom devedesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, švicarski je teolog Hans Küng izašao s tezom da ako se želi stvoriti jedan globalni i dugoročni mir, moraju se uzeti u obzir velike svjetske religije. Svoja nastojanja Küng je u tom pogledu usmjerio na traženje zajedničkih etičkih osnova svim religijama. To nastojanje on je nazvao ´Projekt svjetski etos´. Njegove su glavne teze sljedeće: a. Nema napretka ljudskog roda bez svjetskog etosa; b. Nema svjetskog mira bez religioznog mira; c. Nema religioznog mira bez religioznog dijaloga. (...) Osim početnog odobravanja, Projekt svjetski etos je doživio i masivne kritike, kako u njemačkom tako i u engleskom govornom području. U tom smjeru ide i ovo razmatranje. Budući da je sam članak podijeljen u dva dijela, autorov je cilj u prvom dijelu – koji uostalom vrijedi i kao uvodni – istaknuti prva dva problemska aspekta samog Projekta te time već na početku pokazati da sklopovi i nisu tako jednostavni kako to sam autor Projekta želi. Ove prve dvije kritične točke Projekta su njegov odnos prema moralnom relativizmu, prilikom čega upravo temeljene slabosti samog projekta postaju vidljive, te s tim u vezi Küngov problematični put poopćavanja u području morala.Anfang der neunziger Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts veröffentlichte schweizerischer Theologe Hans Küng die These, dass man, wenn man einen globalen und langfristigen Weltfrieden schaffen möchte, die großen Religionen berücksichtigen müsse. Seine Bestrebungen hat er an die Suche nach einem gründlichen Ethos der Religionen gerichtet. Das hat er ‘Projekt Weltethos’ genannt. Seine zentrale Thesen sind: a. Es gibt keinen Fortbestand des Menschengeschlechts ohne ein Weltethos, b. Es gibt keinen Weltfrieden ohne religiösen Frieden; 3. Es gibt keinen religiösen Frieden ohne religiösen Dialog. Außer aber grundsätzlicher Akzeptierung am Anfang, hat dieser Projekt später auch massive Kritik ausgelost, sowohl im deutschen als auch im eng. Sprachraum. Darum geht es auch in diesem Aufsatz. In seinem erstem Teil – der übrigens als einleitender gilt – wird der Versuch unternommen, die ersten zwei kritischen Momente des sogenannten Projekts herauszustellen und damit zu zeigen, dass die Zusammenhänge nicht so ‘einfach’ und vor allem ‘eindeutig’ sind, wie es sich der Autor des Projekts wünscht. Diese ersten zwei kritischen Aspekte des Projekts sind sein Verhältnis mit dem moralischen Relativismus – wobei gerade seine „ersten” Schwächen sichtig werden, und in Bezug zu dem Küngs problematischer Weg der Verallgemeinerung im Bereich des Moralischen. Ota Weinberger versucht, die logische Analyse für die theologische Argumentation nutzbar zu machen und Forderungen für eine Moral des friedfertigen Diskurses aufzustellen.Hierzu bestimmt er zunächst eine logische und methodologische Charakteristik des Glaubensoperators der Religionen. Nach einer Diskussion des Begriffes der möglichen Welten wird das Theodizeeproblem skeptisch beleuchtet. Zur Konstitution der Willensfreiheit ist weder die Existenz der ontologischen noch des moralischen Bösen erforderlich. Auch ist die Notwendigkeit des Bösen zum Nutzen der Geschöpfe nicht beweisbar. Es gehört jedoch zur Sichtweise der Theologen, (...) daß moralische Momente als Determinanten der Glückseligkeit angesehen werden.Der Autor stellt der Konzeption des Weltethos eine Theorie gegenüber, derzufolge das politische Geschehen durch das Aufeinanderprallen verschiedener Zivilisationen bestimmt ist. Weinberger setzt der gängigen Moral, die den Einsatz für die eigene Gemeinschaft fordert, eine Moral entgegen, die Wege der diskursiven Brücken zwischen divergierenden Welthaltungen sucht. The Confucian tradition, which places the virtue of ren or fellow feeling at its heart as a ‘gateway’ to the more concrete virtues of common Western parlance, offers a potential antidote to the excesses of a Western business ethics which, even after its recent academic reembrace of the Aristotelian tradition, in practice still too often instrumentalises virtue in the service of a ‘rational’ or ‘reasonable’ constraining of the profit motive. The deeper, intrinsic ‘ethos’ promised by a Confucian approach also finds (...) its echo in the West in the work of Hans Küng’s Weltethos project, led today on the business ethics front by Klaus Leisinger and Claus Dierksmeier. This paper explores a dilemma at the heart of the World Ethos movement seen from the twin peaks of the World Ethics Institute at Peking University and the Weltethos Institut at the University of Tübingen: namely, whether a business ethics culture accustomed to thinking in terms of CSR-esque lists of corporate values, virtues or principles can best be reformed via documents like the UN Global Compact, the 2010 Global Economic Ethic Manifesto, or even the UN Sustainable Development Goals, or whether a more radical, revolutionary quest for an inner ‘ethos’, to be lived and experienced by self-cultivating individuals engaged in business all over the world regardless of background, ought somehow to be undertaken parallel to these endeavours. The authors outline possible steps towards such a transformation of the management community’s understanding of virtue, without, however, dismissing the contribution of traditional, dilemma-oriented Western thinking about applied ethics in general, and business ethics in particular. While Walls to Bridges is a broad and comprehensive work, the actualization of a Global Ethic is concrete-not abstract. Professor Küng's vision into the future, built on the expanding Global Ethic is an inspiring read and a call to action for all. What is similar among the world's religious ideologies? What's next in the evolution of the global ethic? Professor and theologian Hans Küng has devoted much of his life to answering these questions. Küng achieved global notoriety in the 60's (...) when he became the first major Roman Catholic theologian of the 20th century to question the notion of papal infallibility. For this, he was stripped of his license to teach as a Roman Catholic theologian but continued teaching as a tenured professor of Ecumenical Theology at the University of Tübingen, Germany. In the 1990s, Küng initiated a project subsequently referred to as the Movement for a "Global Ethic." After massive world-wide research into past and present ethical principles, he spelled out clearly the foundational ethical principles that the world's religions and ideologies, past and present, de facto held/hold in common, that is: The minimal code of behavior that everyone in fact accepts (e.g., "Do not lie, steal, kill innocent persons....") This English translation of The Global Ethic Handbook is a culmination of the "Movement" Küng began in the 90s. He describes his vision for a Global Ethic and takes the reader through the essential aspects of a Global Ethic, including its social, political, legal, economics, communications, esthetics, and philosophical applications.
