In this article, I intend to discuss the Arendtian conception of culture. In her influential essay “Crisis in Culture: Its Social and Its Political Significance,” Arendt argues that culture is at risk of disappearing under conditions of modernity. In her view, modernity is the age of mass society that leads to the destruction of culture and the development of mass culture. This is the situation Arendt has in mind when she speaks of a “crisis in culture,” a situation she describes (...) as worldlessness. Culture, according to her, is a phenomenon of the world. Because of this conviction, argues Arendt, culture has a closer relationship to politics. The article is divided into two parts. In the first part, I explore Arendt's critical reflection on the modern attitude to culture. In the second part, I examine her analysis of the relationship between culture and politics. Throughout these parts, I suggest a reading of Arendt that illustrates her understanding of culture based on the authority of Greek and Roman thought and Kant’s Critique of Judgment. (shrink)

Joane Petrizi – the most significant Georgian medieval philosopher – devoted intensive work to Neoplatonic philosophy. Particularly important is his Georgian translation of Proclus’ Elementatio theologica, on which he commented extensively. One of the most important problems of Joane Petrizi’s Commentaries is that of the cognizing soul, which is to be presented in relation to the man’s cognitive faculty. In his Commentaries, Petrizi speaks mainly of the soul in general and of its different types in nuce, nevertheless to explain some (...) important aspects of the Neoplatonic gnoseology by means of Petrizi’s concept of “man’s soul”, proves to be a fruitful effort. In his Commentaries Joane Petrizi frequently makes use of the terms the “soul of man” and “man’s soul”. A clear definition of “man’s soul”, as one of the most important types of souls, can be attained through a unified analysis of passages on the “particular soul”, which are scattered in Commentaries. Im Beitrag wird auf der Basis der noch nicht recherchierten und enforschten georgischsprachigen Nietzsche-Literatur das Anfangsstadium der georgischen Nietzsche-Forschung rekonstruiert. Dabei stechen vor allem die Nietzsche-Studien von Tschenkeli, Tschitadse, Kasradse, Robakidse, Gamsachurdia, Kapaneli und Tatischwili im Mittelpunkt der Darlegung. Diese Dekner befaßten sich mit Nietzsches Philosophie intensiv und machten von ihm einen produktiven Gebrauch. In den internationalen Nietzsche-Studien had die georgische Nietzsche-Rezeption bisher keine Berücksichtigung gefunden. Es gibt keinen ausführlichen sowie sachgerechten Aufsatz in den westlichen Sprachen, welcher Nietzsches Wirkung auf (...) die georgische Kultur dargelegt hättre. Mit diesem Beitrag soll dieses Forschungsdefizit besitigt und diese Interpretationslinie der Philosophie Nietzsches dargestellt werden.This article reconstructs the early stage of Nietzsche research in Georgia on the bassi of Nietszche literature written in Georgian, which has yet to be researched. The presentation centres above all on the studies of Nietzsche by Tschenkeli, Tschitadse, Kasradse, Robakidse, Gamsachurdia, Kapaneli and Tatischwili. These thinkers occupied themselves intensively with Nietzsche's philosophy and made productive use of it. The Georgian reception of Nietzsche has so far been neglected in international Nietzsche Studies. There are no detailed informed articles in Western languages which deal with Nietzsche's influence on Georgian culture. This article aims to remedy this deficit and present this line of interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy. (shrink)

The book provides a collection of scientific papers which are dedicated to the memory of Burkhard Mojsisch. The collection includes highly qualified papers on ancient, medieval and early modern philosophy, and demonstrates the importance of the historical research of philosophy at the beginning of the 21st century and its current trends. It documents historical aspects of important philosophical discussions of contemporaneity (e.g. in the fields of intercultural philosophy and interdisciplinary philosophy, such as philosophy of neuroscience).

This article seeks to contribute to the literature on corporate governance with particular focus on state-owned enterprises (SOEs). We put our analysis into the context of Russian SOEs operating in an economy with a high level of the state presence, and investigate the relationship between board characteristics and the dividend policy of SOEs. Specifically, we add to the studies on corporate governance in emerging markets by consideration of professional attorneys, a special category of mandated directors and a unique feature of (...) boards of Russian SOEs. We analysed a panel of 1,226 firm-year observations for 2009-2012, the specific period of incremental innovations in SOEs' governance. Generally, our results support the agency theory and demonstrate that an increase in the proportion of independent directors and professional attorneys and an increase in the dividend payouts occur simultaneously, while the proportion of executives on the board is negatively related to the payout ratio.
