RÉSUMÉ Les Lettres édifiantes et curieuses, Mémoires de la Chine abordent de nombreux sujets de la vie sociale parmi lesquels l'infanticide, toléré en Chine encore au XVIIIe siècle, jugé comme un crime par les Occidentaux. Par-delà les jugements moralisateurs, les missionnaires jésuites expliquent cette tradition par la situation économique. La « sociologie » de Montesquieu découvre, en deçà de cette raison, une série de rapports causaux entre les moeurs et la géographie. L'exposition des enfants par leurs parents s'inscrit dans cette (...) relation dans laquelle l'économie peut être envisagée comme une cause seconde. ABSTRACT The Lettres édifiantes et curieuses, Mémoires de la Chine deal with a number of features of social life among which infanticide which was still tolerated in China in the XVIIIth century, while it was considered as a crime in the West. Beyond moral judgements, Jesuit missionaries ascribe this tradition to the economic situation. Montesquieu's " sociology" discovers, beneath this reason, a series of causal links between mores and geography. The exposure of children by their parents comes within the scope of this relation in which economy can be seen as a second cause. (shrink)

Depuis deux décennies, les religieuses catholiques font l’objet de recherches tant historiques que sociologiques. Ces études, plus nombreuses dans le monde nord-américain, participent plus généralement des recherches sur la question des femmes et du genre dont le développement a été favorisé par le contexte des mouvements féministes des années 1970. Parmi les thèmes développés, il y a la question de la féminité des religieuses, leur rapport au travail, leur organisation interne et leur action sociale. Si les interrogations se recoupent au (...) A new model for early diagenetic processes has been developed through a new formula explicitly accounting for microbial population dynamics. Following a mechanistic approach based on enzymatic reactions, a new model has been proposed for oxic mineralisation and denitrification. It incorporates the dynamics of bacterial metabolism. We find a general formula for inhibition processes of which some other mathematical expressions are particular cases. Moreover a fast numerical algorithm has been developed. It allows us to perform simulations of different diagenetic models (...) in non-steady states. We use this algorithm to compare our model to a classical one (Soetaert et al., 1996). Dynamical evolutions of a perturbation of particulate organic carbon (POC) input are studied for both models. (shrink)

Efforts have been dedicated to the understanding of social-ecological systems, an important focus in ethnobiological studies. In particular, ethnobiological investigations have found evidence and tested hypotheses over the last 30 years on the interactions between human groups and their environments, generating the need to formulate a theory for such systems. In this article, we propose the social-ecological theory of maximization to explain the construction and functioning of these systems over time, encompassing hypotheses and evidence from previous ethnobiological studies. In proposing (...) the theory, we present definitions and two conceptual models, an environmental maximization model and a redundancy generation model. The first model seeks to address biota selection and its use by human populations. The second emphasizes how the system organizes itself from the elements that were incorporated into it. Furthermore, we provide the theoretical scenario of plant selection and use from an evolutionary perspective, which explicitly integrates the phylogenetic relationships of plants and human beings. The sites of tightest adhesion that form between cells and substrate surfaces in tissue culture are termed focal contacts. The external faces of focal contacts include specific receptors, belonging to the integrin family of proteins, for fibronectin and vitronectin, two common components of extracellular matrices. On the internal (cytoplasmic) side of focal contacts, several proteins, including talin and vinculin, mediate interactions with the actin filament bundles of the cytoskeleton. The study of adhesion plaques in normal and transformed cells provides a series of phenotypic markers by which the process of transformation can be followed. Several proteins which are concentrated in adhesion plaques have now been identified; a few of these can act as targets for tyrosine kinase. In an attempt to characterize the relationship between tyrosine phosphorylation and cell transformation, the reactions of three such proteins – vinculin, talin and integrin – with a range of tyrosine kinase oncogene products (...) have been studied in detail. Focal adhesions disassemble during mitosis, but surprisingly little is known about how these structures respond to other phases of the cell cycle. Three recent papers reveal unexpected results as they examine adhesions through the cell cycle. A biphasic response is detected where focal adhesions grow during S phase before disassembly begins early in G2. In M phase, activated integrins at the tips of retraction fibers anchor mitotic cells, but these adhesions lack the defining components of focal adhesions, such as talin, (...) paxillin, and zyxin. Re‐examining cell‐matrix adhesion reveals reticular adhesions, a new class of adhesion. These αVβ5 integrin‐mediated adhesions also lack conventional focal adhesion components and anchor mitotic cells to the extracellular matrix. As reviewed here, these studies present insight into how adhesion complexes vary through the cell cycle, and how unconventional adhesions maintain attachment during mitosis while providing spatial memory to guide daughter cell re‐spreading after cell division.
