Regret in the context of unobtained rewards in criminal offenders.Melissa A. Hughes, Mairead C. Dolan & Julie C. Stout - 2014 - Cognition and Emotion 28 (5):913-925.
In this study, we investigated whether differences in the experience of regret may be a potential explanation for damaging behaviours associated with psychopathy and criminal offending. Participants were incarcerated offenders (n = 60) and non-incarcerated controls (n = 20). Psychopathic traits were characterised with the Psychopathic Checklist: Screening Version. Regret was assessed by responses to outcomes on a simulated gambling task. Incarcerated offenders experienced a reduced sense of regret as compared to non-incarcerated controls. We obtained some evidence that specific psychopathic (...)

Interjournalistic discourse about African Americans in television news coverage of Hurricane Katrina.Laura Johnson, Randi Reppen, Mark K. Dolan, John Sonnett & Kirk A. Johnson - 2010 - Discourse and Communication 4 (3):243-261.
This article examines how on-air conversations between journalists indicate how US television coverage of a race-related crisis can reflect racial ideology. Using critical discourse analysis, we examined interjournalistic discourse about African Americans in national network and cable news programs that aired after Hurricane Katrina reached New Orleans. While we expected conversational semantic items from conservative Fox News to reflect racial ideology, we also found such discursive elements from politically moderate and progressive news organizations such as CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. These (...)

The non-effects of class on the gender division of labor in the home:: A comparative study of sweden and the united states.Janeen Baxter, Maureen Dolan, Shu-Ling Hwang, Karen Shire & Erik Olin Wright - 1992 - Gender and Society 6 (2):252-282.
This article explores the relationship between class and the gendered domestic division of labor by examining how the contribution by husbands to housework in dual-career families varies across the class system. The article uses data from the United States and Sweden. The findings indicate that location in the class structure is not a powerful or systematic determinant of variations in the division of labor across households.

Does Variability Across Events Affect Verb Learning in English, Mandarin, and Korean?Jane B. Childers, Jae H. Paik, Melissa Flores, Gabrielle Lai & Megan Dolan - 2017 - Cognitive Science 41 (S4):808-830.
Extending new verbs is important in becoming a productive speaker of a language. Prior results show children have difficulty extending verbs when they have seen events with varied agents. This study further examines the impact of variability on verb learning and asks whether variability interacts with event complexity or differs by language. Children in the United States, China, Korea, and Singapore learned verbs linked to simple and complex events. Sets of events included one or three agents, and children were asked (...)
