    Measurement in the nominal and verbal domains.Kimiko Nakanishi - 2007 - Linguistics and Philosophy 30 (2):235 - 276.
This paper examines some aspects of the grammar of measurement based on data from non-split and split measure phrase (MP) constructions in Japanese. I claim that the non-split MP construction involves measurement of individuals, while the split MP construction involves measurement of events as well as of individuals. This claim is based on the observation that, while both constructions are subject to some semantic restrictions in the nominal domain, only the split MP construction is sensitive to restrictions in the verbal (...)

The scope of even and quantifier raising.Kimiko Nakanishi - 2012 - Natural Language Semantics 20 (2):115-136.
This paper addresses the question of whether the preverbal even (VP-even) embedded in a nonfinite clause can take wide scope (e.g., Bill refused to even drink WATER). The paper presents novel evidence for wide scope VP-even that is independent of the presuppositions of even. The evidence is based on examples of antecedent-contained deletion (ACD), where embedded VP-even associates with a nominal constituent (or part of it) that raises out of the embedded clause via quantifier raising. Assuming that even must c-command (...)

An exploratory study for analyzing interactional processes of group discussion: the case of a focus group interview.Kana Suzuki, Ikuyo Morimoto, Etsuo Mizukami, Hiroko Otsuka & Hitoshi Isahara - 2009 - AI and Society 23 (2):233-249.
The purposes of this study are (a) to establish a measurement for evaluating conversational impressions of group discussions, and (b) to make an exploratory investigation on their interactional processes which may affect to form those impressions. The impression rating and factor analysis undertaken first give us four factors concerning conversational impressions of “focus group interviews (FGIs)”: conversational activeness, conversational sequencing, the attitudes of participants and the relationships of participants. In relation to the factors of conversational activeness and conversational sequencing in (...)

Made in Japan: Connecting the Dots through Contemporary Communitarianism’s Intellectual History.Rick Kenney & Kimiko Akita - 2018 - Journal of Media Ethics 33 (4):170-180.
ABSTRACTTwenty-five years ago, Christians, Ferré, and Fackler’s Good News: Social Ethics and the Press proposed the then-radical notion of communitarianism as an alternative moral philosophy for media ethics. This article evaluates communitarianism as a media ethic, but not only according to the work already done by Christians and colleagues. Instead, this article extends the communitarian ideal by connecting it, in a new way, to notions espoused a half century earlier by Tetsuro Watsuji, a Japanese philosopher whose prescriptions of ethics in (...)

When west writes east: In search of an ethic for cross-cultural interviewing.Rick Kenney & Kimiko Akita - 2008 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 23 (4):280 – 295.
Cross-cultural interviewing can pose challenges for journalists, given potential differences in language, word choice, volume, body posture, and group dynamics. This article explores some of the complexities of cross-cultural interviews with the dual aim of heightening awareness of ethical considerations for journalists who conduct them and of discussing ethical principles that may help in guiding their work. This article attempts to move the discussion of cross-cultural interviews beyond traditional Western ethics. Eastern moral philosophy and ideals of trust and human relations (...)

Tsumura Kimiko and Resurgence of Traditional Noh Theater.Yasutaka Maruki - 2013 - Asian Culture and History 5 (2):p164.
This essay will introduce the biography and works of Tsumura Kimiko (1902-1975), one of the first female professional Noh actors, who threw herself into the male-dominated world and fought against the biased conventions of traditional Noh theater. Not only has she successfully opened the gates to many other female Noh actors, but more importantly, she has reevaluated the artistic value of Noh through her original Noh plays. Precisely, she highlighted the role of natural environment created by the dance accompanied (...)
