    Children’s interaction in an urban face-to-face society: The case of a South-American plaza.Jürgen Streeck & Kathryn E. Harrison - 2015 - Pragmatics and Society 6 (3):305-337.
This paper reports on a micro-ethnography of social interaction in an urban plaza in Colombia, focusing on the plaza’s role as an arena for the acquisition of interaction skills. We investigate how children of different ages initiate and sustain interactions with same-age and older peers and the efforts they make to be recognized and ‘visible’. We interpret our data in light of three theories of socialization: Corsaro’s conception of childhood as “interpretive reproduction”, Vygotsky’s model of the “zone of proximal development”, (...)

The role of sensors in the production of smart city spaces.Vangelis Angelakis, Jonas Löwgren, Ahmet Börütecene, Rasmus Ringdahl, Katherine Harrison & Desirée Enlund - 2022 - Big Data and Society 9 (2).
Smart cities build on the idea of collecting data about the city in order for city administration to be operated more efficiently. Within a research project gathering an interdisciplinary team of researchers – engineers, designers, gender scholars and human geographers – we have been working together using participatory design approaches to explore how paying attention to the diversity of human needs may contribute to making urban spaces comfortable and safe for more people. The project team has deployed sensors collecting data (...)

Review of Richard Bernstein Beyond Objectivism and Relativism: Science, Hermeneutics and Praxis.Karey Harrison - 1985 - Telos: Critical Theory of the Contemporary 63 (Spring):223-227.
Bernstein's recent book examines the extensive debate on the nature of human rationality. He suggests that this debate is beginning to converge — from the varying perspectives of philosophy of science, hermeneutics, sociology, anthropology, and moral and political philosophy — on a new conception of rationality. This new conception breaks with the standard opposition between objectivism and relativism, the terms in which the debate has previously been conducted. His reading of the debate attempts to show that some of the participants (...)

Detecting bodily and discursive noise in the naming of biotech products.Katherine Harrison - 2010 - European Journal of Women's Studies 17 (4):347-361.
This article contributes to existing feminist technoscience analyses by proposing a new tool for examining how norms governing viable and unviable bodies are discursively constructed in an increasingly technologized world. This tool is the result of synthesizing two existing concepts: white noise from the field of media theory/information studies, and the abject from psychosemiotics/gender studies. Synthesizing these two concepts produces an enriched term for detecting interrelations between discursive disturbances and disturbances in bodily norms. In this article, the synthesized concept is (...)

    Ontological Commitments of Ethics and Economics.Karey Harrison - 2013 - Economic Thought 2 (1):1-19.
This paper analyses the cognitive image schemas structuring the ontological commitments of dominant conceptions of ethics and economics to show that the content of economics is implicated in conceptions of ethics, and that these conceptions cannot be separated from questions of research and professional ethics. This analysis of the metaphoric structuring of the ontological commitments of ethics and economics is based on an extension of Kuhn's construct sense of 'paradigm' as concrete analogy; and on techniques of metaphoric analysis developed in (...)

Sexual Deceit: The Ethics of Passing.Kelby Harrison - 2013 - Lanham, MD: Lexington Books.
Using the methodologies and insights of queer theory, narrative theory and analytic philosophy, Sexual Deceit helps us to understand the issues of passing and to evaluate it from a moral point of view. Noting the importance of time and place in discussing this issue, Kelby Harrison combines the insights, key concepts, and important arguments in both traditional philosophy and queer theory in developing an ethical theory called “Gayness as Practical Identity.”.

Action Guide for Addressing Ethical Challenges of Resource Allocation Within Community-Based Healthcare Organizations.Maria W. Merritt, Holly A. Taylor & Krista L. Harrison - 2018 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 29 (2):124-138.
This article proposes an action guide to making decisions regarding the ethical allocation of resources that affect access to healthcare services offered by community-based healthcare organizations. Using the filter of empirical data from a study of decision making in two community-based healthcare organizations, we identify potentially relevant conceptual guidance from a review of frameworks and action guides in the public health, health policy, and organizational ethics literature. We describe the development of this action guide. We used data from a prior (...)
