Chemistry is engaged with a subject that is not static but evolving in time, in chemical space, namely, the collection of all substances and reactions reported over time. If we accept that premise, we can identify the path dependencies and self-reinforcing mechanisms that determined its current space and selected it across historical alternatives. In particular, data analysis allows us to identify two crucial turning points. One was the introduction of structural theory in 1860, the other a technological shift around 1980.

Cognitive science is experiencing a pragmatic turn away from the traditional representation-centered framework toward a view that focuses on understanding cognition as "enactive." This enactive view holds that cognition does not produce models of the world but rather subserves action as it is grounded in sensorimotor skills. In this volume, experts from cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, robotics, and philosophy of mind assess the foundations and implications of a novel action-oriented view of cognition. This paper explores Simon Stevin’s l’Arithmétique of 1585, where we find a novel understanding of the concept of number. I will discuss the dynamics between his practice and philosophy of mathematics, and put it in the context of his general epistemological attitude. Subsequently, I will take a close look at his justificational concerns, and at how these are reflected in his inductive, a postiori and structuralist approach to investigating the numerical field. I will argue that Stevin’s renewed conceptualisation of the (...) notion of number is a sort of “existential closure” of the numerical domain, founded upon the practice of his predecessors and contemporaries. Accordingly, I want to make clear that l’Aritmetique have to be read not as an ontological analysis or exploration of the numerical field, but as an explication of a mathematical ethos. In this sense, this article also intends to make a specific contribution to the broader issue of the “ethics of geometry.”. (shrink)

Galileo did not develop a systematic methodology but rather a methodical form which represents an essential part of the development of modern scientific thought. Keywords to the methodical form of Galileo's thought are: 1) The geometrization of the sciences - this refers especially to the explication of the methodological priority of a theory of measurement. 2) Argomento ex suppositione, that is, the coupling of the originally proof-theoretical distinction between analysis and synthesis to elements of a methodology of empirical science. 3) (...) The axiomatic structure of mechanics that corresponds to the modern semantic theory conception and to constructivist conceptions of the philosophy of science. 4) A constructive concept of experience, which replaces the Aristotelian concept of a phenomenal experience in the construction of physics. Hans Albert zu lesen, ist ein Gewinn, mit Hans Albert zu streiten, ist ein Vergnügen. In den 1970er Jahren hatte ich das Vergnügen. Es ging um den Begriff der Begründung, um was sonst. Hans Albert hatte seine Vorstellungen, die zugleich eine fundamentale Kritik an der Geschichte eines begründungsorientierten philosophischen Denkens darstellen, in Form des von ihm so bezeichneten Münchhausen-Trilemmas formuliert, wonach deduktiv verstandene Begründungen philosophisch hoffnungslos in drei Alternativen landen: in einem unendlichen Begründungsregreß, in dem die Kette der zur Begründung (...) herangezogenen Sätze nicht abbricht, in einem Begründungszirkel, in dem Sätze als ihre eigene Begründungsbasis auftreten, in der dogmatischen Auszeichnung einer Begründungsbasis. Für Hans Albert, in der Identifikation von Begründung und Deduktion, folgte daraus die Preisgabe des Ideals der Begründung zugunsten des Ideals der kritischen Prüfung, für mich hingegen die Ausarbeitung nicht-deduktiver, im weitesten Sinne operativer Formen der Begründung. This work presents a thorough derivation of the full-wave transmission-line equations on the basis of Maxwell’s theory. The multiconductor system is assumed to be composed of nonuniform thin wires. It is shown that the mixed potential integral equations are equivalent to generalized telegrapher equations. Novel, exact, and compact expressions for the multiconductor transmission-line parameters are derived, and their connection to radiation effects is shown. Iteration and perturbation procedures are proposed for the solution of the generalized transmission-line equations.
