Mass Media and new social media are one of the most significant indicators for deep transformations our societies are currently undergoing. This brings along serious problems how we can organize and stabilize our public life, especially in questions of democratic representation and self-government. It is for this reason the article first discusses critically the rhetoric talk of media as »fourth power in state« to consider then the function and role media morally should have in democratic civil societies. Thereby, a normative (...) concept of public sphere will be proposed that involves aspects of a professional ethics for both, producers and consumers of public opinion. Reconsidering therefore ecclesiology as an exemplary theory of public sphere can provide a paradigm for understanding constructively Christian communal life within a pluralistic media society. ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer Aufsatz diskutiert die Neutralität des Staates als Thema theologischer Ethik. Die ideologische Neutralität hängt von einer spezifischen Haltung von Staat und Gesetz gegenüber religiösen Überzeugungen und Gemeinschaften ab. Diese beinhaltet sowohl die Garantie von Religionsfreiheit als auch das Recht, sich jeglicher Religion zu enthalten. In pluralistischen Gesellschaften ist es unumgänglich, zwischen religiösen Gemeinschaften, die den Prinzipien der Verfassung beipflichten, und religiösen Organisationen, die dies nicht tun, zu unterscheiden. Deshalb muss die Theologie ihre eigene Position in Bezug auf ein christliches (...) Verständnis von Staat und Gesetz sowie auf die Verfassung selbst klären.SUMMARYThe article discusses the neutrality of the state as a topic for Theological Ethics. Ideological neutrality depends on a specific attitude of state and law towards religious convictions and communities. That includes both the guarantee of religious liberty and the right to dissent from any religion. In pluralistic societies it is absolutely necessary to distinguish between religious communities which agree with the constitutional principles and religious organisations which do not. Therefore, theology has to clarify its own position on a Christian understanding of state and law and of the constitution itself. (shrink)

The article questions concepts of ‘democratic peace’ that presuppose an intrinsic relation between pacifism and democracy. This view lacks from both, empirical evidence and historical insight. Instead, pacifism as political and personal virtue can be better linked to the Deweyan idea of democracy as the basic way of life, that is, mutual cooperation and self-realisation. But not only pacifism but also warfare and aggressive conduct often are rooted and result in an ethos of solidarity and cooperation. Therefore, the task for (...) any realistic concept of democratic pacifism is at least two-fold: finding ‘moral equivalents’ to war and cultivating an ethos of self-criticism and self-restraint as already the Old Testament’s prophets have proclaimed. This volume views human existence from various perspectives and asks what its purpose is. The underlying thesis is that humans are creatures of relationships. Any anthropology that fails to take this fact seriously will of necessity remain abstract. Instead the authors are interested in how different academic disciplines describe the variety of relationships in human life, taking into account their ethical and theological dimensions.

Peirce and Royce were giants of American Philosophy at the beginning of the last century. Their contributions still have a high impact on current debates in metaphysics, philosophical theology and philosophy of religion. This is especially true for Peirce and only to a slightly lesser extent for Royce. Their contributions in philosophical theology and philosophy of religion is even more relevant because they did not participate in so-called religion-science-wars. Neither of them refuted or ignored modern natural sciences. On his website, Robert Cummings Neville makes an interesting remark: My serious intellectual life began in 1944 at the age of five when a kindergarten classmate told me that God is a person. I checked with my father about this, and he said, “No, Jesus was a person but God is more like electricity or light.” This seemed reasonable and triggered in me a decisive love of God. Josiah Royce was undoubtedly one of the most interesting thinkers of classical American philosophy in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. His works cover a wide range of subjects from psychology and issues of social philosophy to metaphysics. Surrounded by philosophers such as William James or Charles Sanders Peirce, Royce developed a concept of pragmatism which he himself called "absolute pragmatism" and which was centred around a theory of community. The essays in this edited volume deal with (...) this pragmatistic approach in his work and discuss it from various points of view. Among other things, they explore Royce's relationship to German idealism, the foundation of his ethics as well as his philosophical doctrine of God and his philosophy of religion.
