    Ammianus Marcellinus 26.4.5–6.R. S. O. Tomlin - 1979 - Classical Quarterly 29 (02):470-.

Ammianus Marcellinus 15.13.1–2: some observations on the career and bilingualism of Strategius Musonianus.Jan Willem Drijvers - 1996 - Classical Quarterly 46 (02):532-.
At the end of Book 15 of his Res Gestae Ammianus Marcellinus reports how Strategius Musonianus became the successor of the murdered Domitianus as Praefectus Praetorio Orientis . He tells that Strategius was a man versed in the two languages, i.e. Greek and Latin, and that because of this he had won a higher distinction than was expected. When Constantine the Great, so says Ammianus, was looking for an expert interpreter for his investigation into the Manichaean and (...)

    Ammianus Marcellinus and the Lies of Metrodorus.B. H. Warmington - 1981 - Classical Quarterly 31 (02):464-.
The eleventh-century Byzantine compiler Cedrenus includes a unique story in the midst of his otherwise traditional and hagiographic material on the emperor Constantine. Mentioning the outbreak of war between the Roman and Persian empires, he describes the cause of the breakdown of peace somewhat as follows. A certain Metrodorus, who was of Persian origin, went to visit the Brahmins in India to study philosophy and won the reputation of being a holy man through his asceticism. He also built water mills (...)

    Eunapius, Ammianus Marcellinus, and Zosimus on Julian's Persian Expedition.Walter R. Chalmers - 1960 - Classical Quarterly 10 (3-4):152-.
In a recent article, Dr. A. F. Norman has attributed to Eunapius the authorship of a fragment in Suidas , which clearly relates to the siege of Maiozamalcha. His arguments are cogent and must, I think, be accepted. Some slight additional support for the attribution is provided by the fact that it contains the adverb of which, as Vollebregt pointed out, Eunapius was particularly fond. Norman compares this fragment with the relevant passages in Ammianus Marcellinus and Zosimus and (...)

    Ammianus marcellinus 15.5.22 and eutropius 10.16.1: An allusion.Alan J. Ross - 2015 - Classical Quarterly 65 (1):424-427.
In Authority and Tradition in Ancient Historiography, John Marincola downplays the importance of an historian's choice to use first-, rather than third-, person verbs to represent his actions as an historical protagonist within his narrative. Marincola's justification for this rests on the incongruous groupings that arise if one divides first-person narrators from third: among the former we find Velleius, Eutropius and Ammianus representing Latin historians of the Empire. However, as part of a wider study which examines Ammianus' nuanced (...)

The Audience of Ammianus Marcellinus and the Circulation of Books in the Late Roman World.Darío N. Sánchez Vendramini - 2018 - Journal of Ancient History 6 (2):234-259.
Since the late nineteenth century, studies of Ammianus’ audience have reached widely divergent conclusions. Research has focused on two opposed theses: while some scholars have seen the pagan senatorial aristocracy as the audience of the Res Gestae, others have assigned that role to the imperial bureaucracy. However, in thinking that a work could reach—or target—exclusively the members of a specific social group, the prevalent views on Ammianus’ audience contradict what we know about the circulation of books in the (...)

    Christians and Christianity in Ammianus Marcellinus.E. D. Hunt - 1985 - Classical Quarterly 35 (01):186-.
Ammianus Marcellinus, by common consent the last great historian of Rome, rounds off his obituary notice of the emperor Constantius II with the following observation: The plain simplicity of Christianity he obscured by an old woman's superstition; by intricate investigation instead of seriously trying to reconcile, he stirred up very many disputes, and as these spread widely he nourished them with arguments about words; with the result that crowds of bishops rushed hither and thither by means of public (...)

    The younger Pliny and Ammianus Marcellinus.Neil Adkin - 1998 - Classical Quarterly 48 (02):593-595.
The investigations of Fletcher and Owens have documented the breadth of Ammianus’ familiarity with Latin literature; however, neither scholar was able to demonstrate a debt to Pliny the Younger. At the same time Alan Cameron has shown that in the later fourth century the Letters of Pliny enjoyed a certain vogue. The issue of Ammianus’ knowledge of Pliny is discussed by Cameron on two occasions. The evidence he cites inclines him to the duly circumspect view that Ammianus (...)

A Double Tragic Allusion in Ammianus Marcellinus 14.1.3.Francisco J. Alonso - forthcoming - Classical Quarterly:1-9.
This article identifies a double allusion to the tragic characters of Phaedra and Eriphyle in Amm. Marc. 14.1.3 and considers its possible meanings. In combination, these allusions evoke the double nature of the story of Eriphyle, therefore functioning as a reference to the double nature of Caesar Gallus’ depiction in Ammianus. The double allusion consequently forms part of Ammianus’ tragic style throughout Book 14. Having identified the presence of this double allusion, the article illuminates its possible meaning by (...)

Writers, Rascals and Rebels: Information Wars in the Res Gestae of Ammianus Marcellinus.Guy Williams - forthcoming - Classical Quarterly:1-18.
This article examines how the historian deals with ‘information’ broadly conceived, especially its acquisition, retention and loss. Ammianus details a complex interplay between those who control information and those who must work with an information deficit. Just as this dialogue plays out within the text, however, so too does it with respect to the author's methodology, which dances between the poles of incomplete and complete information depending on circumstance. Ammianus thus becomes an author as hard to pin down (...)

Bees and vultures: Egyptian hieroglyphs in ammianus marcellinus.Frances Foster - 2020 - Classical Quarterly 70 (2):884-890.
In his Res Gestae, the historian Ammianus Marcellinus describes the Egyptian city of Thebes and the obelisks that can be found there. There is an unusual passage in which he describes hieroglyphic writings. He goes on to show, through two examples, how hieroglyphs might seem bizarre, but in fact contain their own logic which can be explained : non enim ut nunc litterarum numerus praestitutus et facilis exprimit quicquid humana mens concipere potest, ita prisci quoque scriptitarunt Aegyptii, sed (...)
