We generalize the double negation construction of Boolean algebras in Heyting algebras to a double negation construction of the same in Visser algebras. This result allows us to generalize Glivenko’s theorem from intuitionistic propositional logic and Heyting algebras to Visser’s basic propositional logic and Visser algebras.

Deontic logic is devoted to the study of logical properties of normative predicates such as permission, obligation and prohibition. Since it is usual to apply these predicates to actions, many deontic logicians have proposed formalisms where actions and action combinators are present. Some standard action combinators are action conjunction, choice between actions and not doing a given action. These combinators resemble boolean operators, and therefore the theory of boolean algebra offers a well-known athematical framework to study the properties (...) of the classic deontic operators when applied to actions. In his seminal work, Segerberg uses constructions coming from boolean algebras to formalize the usual deontic notions. Segerberg’s work provided the initial step to understand logical properties of deontic operators when they are applied to actions. In the last years, other authors have proposed related logics. In this chapter we introduce Segerberg’s work, study related formalisms and investigate further challenges in this area. (shrink)

We describe the countably saturated models and prime models of the theory Thprin of Boolean algebras with a principal ideal, the theory Thmax of Boolean algebras with a maximal ideal, the theory Thac of atomic Boolean algebras with an ideal such that the supremum of the ideal exists, and the theory Thsa of atomless Boolean algebras with an ideal such that the supremum of the ideal exists. We prove that there are infinitely (...) many completions of the theory of Boolean algebras with a distinguished ideal that do not have a countably saturated model. Also, we give a sufficient condition for a model of the theory TX of Boolean algebras with distinguished ideals to be elementarily equivalent to a countably saturated model of TX. (shrink)

Tarski defined a way of assigning to each Boolean algebra, B, an invariant inv(B) ∈ In, where In is a set of triples from ℕ, such that two Boolean algebras have the same invariant if and only if they are elementarily equivalent. Moreover, given the invariant of a Boolean algebra, there is a computable procedure that decides its elementary theory. If we restrict our attention to dense Boolean algebras, these invariants determine the algebra up (...) to isomorphism. In this paper we analyze the complexity of the question "Does B have invariant x?" For each x ∈ In we define a complexity class Γx that could be either Σⁿ, Πⁿ, Σⁿ ∧ Πⁿ, or Πω+1 depending on x, and we prove that the set of indices for computable Boolean algebras with invariant x is complete for the class Γx. Analogs of many of these results for computably enumerable Boolean algebras were proven in earlier works by Selivanov. In a more recent work, he showed that similar methods can be used to obtain the results for computable ones. Our methods are quite different and give new results as well. As the algebras we construct to witness hardness are all dense, we establish new similar results for the complexity of various isomorphism problems for dense Boolean algebras. (shrink)

In this paper we investigate Boolean algebras and their subalgebras in Alternative Set Theory . We show that any two countable atomless Boolean algebras are isomorphic and we give an example of such a Boolean algebra. One other main result is, that there is an infinite Boolean algebra freely generated by a set. At the end of the paper we show that the sentence “There is no non-trivial free group which is a set” is (...) consistent with AST. (shrink)

We introduce properties of Boolean algebras which are closely related to the existence of winning strategies in the Banach-Mazur Boolean game. A σ-short Boolean algebra is a Boolean algebra that has a dense subset in which every strictly descending sequence of length ω does not have a nonzero lower bound. We give a characterization of σ-short Boolean algebras and study properties of σ-short Boolean algebras.

Some aspects of the theory of Boolean algebras and distributive lattices–in particular, the Stone Representation Theorems and the properties of filters and ideals–are analyzed in a constructive setting.

We consider the theory Thprin of Boolean algebras with a principal ideal, the theory Thmax of Boolean algebras with a maximal ideal, the theory Thac of atomic Boolean algebras with an ideal where the supremum of the ideal exists, and the theory Thsa of atomless Boolean algebras with an ideal where the supremum of the ideal exists. First, we find elementary invariants for Thprin and Thsa. If T is a theory in a (...) first order language and α is a linear order with least element, then we let Sentalg be the Lindenbaum-Tarski algebra with respect to T, and we let intalg be the interval algebra of α. Using rank diagrams, we show that Sentalg ⋍ intalg, Sentalg ⋍ intalg ⋍ Sentalg, and Sentalg ⋍ intalg. For Thmax and Thac we use Ershov's elementary invariants of these theories. We also show that the algebra of formulas of the theory Tx of Boolean algebras with finitely many ideals is atomic. (shrink)

By using the notion of a simplified (κ,1)-morass, we construct κ-thin-tall, κ-thin-thick and, in a forcing extension, κ-very thin-thick superatomic Boolean algebras for every infinite regular cardinal κ.

The theorems of the propositional calculus and the predicate calculus are stated, and the analogous principles of Boolean Algebra are identified. Also, the primary principles of modal logic are stated, and a procedure is described for identifying their Boolean analogues.

Using Koszmider's strongly unbounded functions, we show the following consistency result: Suppose that κ, λ are infinite cardinals such that κ++ + ≤ λ, κ<κ = κ and 2κ = κ+, and η is an ordinal with κ+ ≤ η < κ++ and cf = κ+. Then, in some cardinal-preserving generic extension there is a superatomic Boolean algebra equation image such that equation image, equation image for every α < η and equation image. Especially, equation image and equation image (...) can be cardinal sequences of superatomic Boolean algebras. (shrink)

We show, roughly speaking, that it requires ω iterations of the Turing jump to decode nontrivial information from Boolean algebras in an isomorphism invariant fashion. More precisely, if α is a recursive ordinal, A is a countable structure with finite signature, and d is a degree, we say that A has αth-jump degree d if d is the least degree which is the αth jump of some degree c such there is an isomorphic copy of A with universe (...) ω in which the functions and relations have degree at most c. We show that every degree d ≥ 0 (ω) is the ωth jump degree of a Boolean algebra, but that for $n no Boolean algebra has nth-jump degree $\mathbf{d} > 0^{(n)}$ . The former result follows easily from work of L. Feiner. The proof of the latter result uses the forcing methods of J. Knight together with an analysis of various equivalences between Boolean algebras based on a study of their Stone spaces. A byproduct of the proof is a method for constructing Stone spaces with various prescribed properties. (shrink)

If κ is an infinite cardinal, a complete Boolean algebra B is called κ-supported if for each sequence 〈bβ : β αbβ = equation imagemath imageequation imageβ∈Abβ holds. Combinatorial and forcing equivalents of this property are given and compared with the other forcing related properties of Boolean algebras . The set of regular cardinals κ for which B is not κ-supported is investigated.

Mary Everest, Boole's wife, claimed after the death of her husband that his logic had a psychological, pedagogical, and religious origin and aim rather than the mathematico-logical ones assigned to it by critics and scientists. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the validity of such a claim. Following the theory of Boolean algebras with modal operators , in this paper we investigate Boolean algebras with sufficiency operators and mixed operators . We present results concerning representability, generation by finite members, first order axiomatisability, possession of a discriminator term etc. We generalise the classes BAO, SUA, and MIA to classes of algebras with the families of relative operators. This article contains the proof of equivalence boolean algebra and syllogistics arc2. The system arc2 is obtained as a superstructure above the propositional calculus. Subjects and predicates of syllogistic functors a, E, J, O may be complex terms, Which are formed using operations of intersection, Union and complement. In contrast to negative sentences the interpretation of affirmative sentences suggests non-Empty terms. To prove the corresponding theorem we demonstrate that boolean algebra is included into syllogistics arc2 and vice versa.

We will study the question about decidability for Boolean algebras with first elementary characteristic one. The main problem is sufficient conditions for decidability of Boolean algebras with recursive representation for extended signature by definable predicates. We will use the base definitions on recursive and constructive models from [2, 4–6, 10, 11] but on Boolean algebras from [1, 8].

Famous for the number-theoretic first-order statement known as Goodstein's theorem, author R. L. Goodstein was also well known as a distinguished educator. In this paper we consider properties, related to model-completeness, of the theory of integrally closed commutative regular rings. We obtain the main theorem claiming that in a Boolean algebra B, the truth of a prenex Σn-formula whose parameters ai partition B, can be determined by finitely many conditions built from the first entry of Tarski invariant T(ai)'s, n-characteristic D(n, ai)'s and the quantities S(ai, l) and S'(ai, l) for $l < n$. Then we derive two important theorems. One claims (...) that for any Boolean algebras A and B, an embedding of A into B preserving D(n, a) for all a ∈ A is a Σn-extension. The other claims that the theory of n-separable Boolean algebras admits elimination of quantifiers in a simple definitional extension of the language of Boolean algebras. We present algebraic semantics for the classical logic of proofs based on Boolean algebras. We also extend the language of the logic of proofs in order to have a Boolean structure on proof terms and equality predicate on terms. Moreover, the completeness theorem and certain generalizations of Stone’s representation theorem are obtained for all proposed algebras.

An analogue of Mathias forcing is studied in connection of free Boolean algebras and nowhere dense ultrafilters. Some applications to rigid Boolean algebras are given.

We consider a classM of Boolean algebras with strictly positive, finitely additive measures. It is shown thatM is closed under iterations with finite support and that the forcing via such an algebra does not destroy the Lebesgue measure structure from the ground model. Also, we deduce a simple characterization of Martin's Axiom reduced to the classM.

The article deals with compatible families of Boolean algebras. We define the notion of a partial Boolean algebra in a broader sense (PBA(bs)) and then we show that there is a mutual correspondence between PBA(bs) and compatible families of Boolean algebras (Theorem (1.8)). We examine in detail the interdependence between PBA(bs) and the following classes: partial Boolean algebras in the sense of Kochen and Specker (§ 2), ortholattices (§ 3, § 5), and orthomodular (...) posets (§ 4), respectively. This paper compares two 3D logical diagrams for the Boolean algebra B4, viz. the rhombic dodecahedron and the nested tetrahedron. Geometric properties such as collinearity and central symmetry are examined from a cognitive perspective, focussing on diagram design principles such as congruence/isomorphism and apprehension.

For an arbitrary similarity type of Boolean Algebras with Operators we define a class of Sahlqvist identities. Sahlqvist identities have two important properties. First, a Sahlqvist identity is valid in a complex algebra if and only if the underlying relational atom structure satisfies a first-order condition which can be effectively read off from the syntactic form of the identity. Second, and as a consequence of the first property, Sahlqvist identities are canonical, that is, their validity is preserved under (...) taking canonical embedding algebras. Taken together, these properties imply that results about a Sahlqvist variety V van be obtained by reasoning in the elementary class of canonical structures of algebras in V. We give an example of this strategy in the variety of Cylindric Algebras: we show that an important identity called Henkin's equation is equivalent to a simpler identity that uses only one variable. We give a conceptually simple proof by showing that the firstorder correspondents of these two equations are equivalent over the class of cylindric atom structures. (shrink)

We show the non-arithmeticity of 1st order theories of lattices of Σ n sentences modulo provable equivalence in a formal theory, of diagonalizable algebras of a wider class of arithmetic theories than has been previously known, and of the lattice of degrees of interpretability over PA. The first two results are applications of Nies’ theorem on the non-arithmeticity of the 1st order theory of the lattice of r.e. ideals on any effectively dense r.e. Boolean algebra. The theorem on (...) degrees of interpretability relies on an adaptation of techniques leading to Nies’ theorem. (shrink)

This work concerns constructive aspects of measure theory. By considering metric completions of Boolean algebras – an approach first suggested by Kolmogorov – one can give a very simple construction of e.g. the Lebesgue measure on the unit interval. The integration spaces of Bishop and Cheng turn out to give examples of such Boolean algebras. We analyse next the notion of Borel subsets. We show that the algebra of such subsets can be characterised in a pointfree (...) and constructive way by an initiality condition. We then use our work to define in a purely inductive way the measure of Borel subsets. (shrink)

Given an infinite Boolean algebra B, we find a natural class of equation image-definable equivalence relations equation image such that every imaginary element from Beq is interdefinable with an element from a sort determined by some equivalence relation from equation image. It follows that B together with the family of sorts determined by equation image admits elimination of imaginaries in a suitable multisorted language. It is unprovable that every complete subalgebra of a countably closed complete Boolean algebra is countably closed.

We show that it consistent with Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory that there is an infinite, compact Boolean algebra.

We characterize complete Boolean algebras with dense subtrees. The main results show that a complete Boolean algebra contains a dense tree if its generic filter collapses the algebra's density to its distributivity number and the reverse holds for homogeneous algebras.
