Abstract

In this dissertation I critically evaluate arguments in support of the conclusion that we need narrow content properties rather than propositional attitude properties either for the purposes of scientific psychological explanation or in order to account for common intuitions concerning authoritative self-knowledge. I also critically evaluate several specific accounts of what narrow content properties are. ;My conclusions are conservative in nature. I argue that the motivations offered for the postulation of narrow content properties are not good ones, and that this is just as well since each of the offered specific accounts of what narrow content properties might be is in some important respect inadequate.
