Abstract

This article deals with the Augustinian theory of miracles. It shows how saint Augustine develops a naturalist conception of miracles by inscribing their phenomenon in the first principles of the creation of the world. Be it an event, a sign or a narrative, a miracle is never in contradiction with the laws of nature, but it diverts its ordinary course. A miracle is thus natural in the sense that it always constitutes the possible effect of a natural cause, modified in its ordinary course.
