The writings of Volker Gerhardt have had substantial influence on recent Nietzsche research. This volume collects a variety of his influential essays and makes them available to scholars and causal readers alike. The present collection takes stock of Nietzsche’s most prominent ideas. Gerhardt investigates which of these ideas still offer solutions for the problems of today. In the process, it becomes clear what sort of inspiration a future-oriented philosophizing can draw from Nietzsche.

Epiphenomenalism has been criticized with several objections. It has been argued that epiphenomenalism is incompatible with the alleged causal relevance of mental states, and that it renders knowledge of our own conscious states impossible. In this article, it is demonstrated that qualia-epiphenomenalism follows from some well- founded assumptions, and that it meets the cited objections. Though not free from difficulties, it is at least superior to its main competitors, namely, physicalism and interactionism.

Gender and Islam are addressed from a comparative perspective bringing into conversation not only the experience of different Muslim countries with Islamic law but also by analysing Jewish family law. Popper’s theory of the three worlds has been widely criticized. In this paper, the main points of criticism are discussed. It is shown that the most serious difficulties are caused by Popper’s assumption that world 3 contains ideal, Platonic objects, which nevertheless have a history and are, in a certain sense, able to create other world 3 objects. Then it is asked whether the idea of a third world is necessary to explain the growth of knowledge and the development of (...) culture. The question is answered in the negative. Finally, it is discussed whether the talk of world 3 objects can be interpreted in a way that does not raise the problems of Popper’s conception. (shrink)

Die Suche nach Erkenntnis vollzieht sich stets unter bestimmten sozialen Bedingungen. Was folgt daraus für die Ideen der Rationalität und der Wahrheit? Ist Erkenntnis nur mehr als gültig zu betrachten im jeweils vorliegenden sprachlichen und kulturellen Kontext? Ist es noch vertretbar, als das Ziel der Forschung die Darstellung einer objektiven Realität anzusehen? Mit diesen und verwandten Fragen setzen sich die Autoren dieses Bandes auseinander. This special issue of History of the Humane Sciences intends to shed light on a series of psychopathological entities that do not target well defined conditions and experiences, but rather aim at delimiting zones of uncertainty that defy psychopathology’s order of things: mild diagnoses or subthreshold disorders, borderline conditions, culture bound syndromes, or ideas of dimensions and dimensionality. While these categories have come to play an increasingly central role in psychiatric and psychological thinking during the last 50 years, historians and (...) social scientists have had remarkably little to say about how they have been created, what they have been used for, and what kind of realities they have helped to shape. In this introductory article we propose the concept of ‘psychopathological fringes’ to refer to these categories that are located somewhere at the border of psychopathological classifications and refer to zones of conceptual underdetermination. The notion of fringes serves to highlight both the conceptually and the socially marginal nature of the conditions, personal identities, and worlds delimited by these categories. The fringes of psychopathology are zones of vagueness, of epistemic uncertainty, and moral ambiguity. This introduction proposes a first incursion in these zones. It suggests some of the reason why they might have had attracted little interest in the past and why they may be more salient recently. It follows some analytical clues that might help chart a way through it and proposes a map through the collection of articles included in this issue. (shrink)

An introduction to Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge for a textbook.

Gegen den Physikalismus wird der Einwand vorgebracht, dass Qualia intrinsische, nichtreduzierbare Eigenschaften seien . Doch worauf stützt sich dieser Einwand? Im vorliegenden Artikel werden die erkenntnistheoretischen Voraussetzungen des Qualia-Arguments diskutiert. Als erforderlich erweist sich zunächst die Annahme, dass Qualia wahrnehmbar sind, sei es durch Introspektion oder durch die reflexive Struktur des Bewusstseins. Eine entscheidende Rolle spielt darüber hinaus die Annahme, dass die Wahrnehmung der Qualia eine direkte ist. Diese Annahmen werden einer eingehenden Prüfung unterzogen, mit dem Ergebnis, dass sie zwar (...) nicht als völlig gesichert, aber dennoch als gerechtfertigt gelten können. Für das Qualia-Argument ergibt sich daraus, dass es nach wie vor einen schwerwiegenden Einwand gegen den Physikalismus darstellt. (shrink)

Diese Studien zu Plessner stellen das Philosophie-Konzept seiner Anthropologie in den Mittelpunkt und heben es als Ausdruck der Moderne heraus. Exzentrizität ist eine Bestimmung des Citoyens, nicht des homo sapiens. Plessners Postulat, die Unergründlichkeit des Menschen verbindlich zu nehmen, ist ein Plädoyer, die unaustauschbare Individualität und Wandelbarkeit der Person zu wahren. Solcher Schutz der Würde wäre überflüssig, wären Personen nicht verletzbar. Weil Plessner dies ernst nimmt, ist das moderne Versprechen von Autonomie nicht Autarkie, sondern Souveränität: Handeln als Ausdruck der Unentscheidbarkeit (...) von Macht und Ohnmacht. Plessners Einzigartigkeit liegt darin, dass dies auch sein eigenes Philosophieren auszeichnet, das durch ein Augenzwinkern gebrochen ist: Man kann, aber man muss den Menschen nicht als Exzentriker ansprechen. Nur wenn man es tut, nimmt man ihn als Würdigen. (shrink)
