Effects of Age-Related Stereotype Threat on Metacognition.Natasha Y. Fourquet, Tara K. Patterson, Changrui Li, Alan D. Castel & Barbara J. Knowlton - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Previous work has shown that memory performance in older adults is affected by activation of a stereotype of age-related memory decline. In the present experiment, we examined whether stereotype threat would affect metamemory in older adults; that is, whether under stereotype threat they make poorer judgments about what they could remember. We tested older adults (MAge= 66.18 years) on a task in which participants viewed words paired with point values and “bet” on whether they could later recall each word. If (...)

Global citizenship, migration and national curriculum: A tale of two nations.Timothy Patterson & Yoonjung Choi - 2018 - British Journal of Educational Studies 66 (4):477-496.
Scotland and South Korea are experiencing novel challenges in educating for and about migrant populations. Through a critical discourse analysis of these nations’ national curricula, we consider the guidance educators are offered in teaching about issues related to migration in increasingly diverse classrooms. Framed by theories of critical global citizenship, our analysis suggests that both curricula use ambiguous approaches to global citizenship education. These curricula acknowledge the presence of migrants without disturbing stable visions of Korean and Scottish national identities. Such (...)

To what ends? Analyzing teacher candidates’ goals and perceptions of student talk in social studies discussions.Jenni Conrad, Abby Reisman, Lightning Jay, Timothy Patterson, Joseph I. Eisman, Avi Kaplan & Wendy Chan - 2023 - Journal of Social Studies Research 47 (2):79-91.
Focusing on episodes of student-generated and -sustained talk during document-based disciplinary history discussions, this study explored what teacher candidates prioritize and value about social studies discussions, and how these priorities align with their actions and goals as facilitators. Using a complex systems-based model, we investigated candidates’ goals as they planned for, facilitated, and reflected upon student sensemaking relative to three common orientations for social studies discussions: disciplinary history, participatory civics, and critical literacy. Findings revealed that candidates employed elements from all (...)

Does Preparing Citizens Matter? Examining the Value of Civic Mindedness in Pre-Service Teachers.Timothy Patterson & Benjamin Torsney - 2021 - Journal of Social Studies Research 45 (3):211-226.
This exploratory mixed-methods study considers what motivates pre-service social studies teachers to pursue a career in teaching, and the extent to which those motivations are connected to a desire to promote democratic citizenship. We seek to put pre-service social studies teachers’ motivations into a broader context by comparing them to those of pre-service teachers in other certification areas. Using surveys and open-ended responses, we analyzed the motivational factors of 218 pre-service teachers using the FIT-Choice Scale and Westheimer and Kahne's categories (...)

    Love in Hurston's Art and Life.Tiffany Ruby Patterson - 2020 - Utopian Studies 26 (1):77-93.
ABSTRACT Love centers Zora Neale Hurston's art and her life. Her most celebrated novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and her sharply criticized autobiography, Dust Tracks on A Road, explore the beauty and difficulties of love for women in the early twentieth century. Janie in Their Eyes was forced to choose between love and freedom to be herself. For Hurston, passionate love for one man competed with her deep desire for a career as a writer and playwright. In all instances, (...)
