When is Sustainability a Liability, and When Is It an Asset? Quality Inferences for Core and Peripheral Attributes.Siv Skard, Sveinung Jørgensen & Lars Jacob Tynes Pedersen - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 173 (1):109-132.
Sustainable products offered in today’s marketplace are labelled with product-related green attributes or non-product-related green attributes. The current research investigates consumers’ inferences about a product’s functional quality when its core attributes are green and when its peripheral attributes are green. Four experimental studies and an internal meta-analysis show that there is a sustainability liability effect in strength-dependent categories, and a sustainability asset effect in gentleness-dependent categories. Our research contributes to the current understanding of how consumers make inferences about product quality (...)

What are referring expressions? How do we recognize them?Stig W. Jørgensen - 1998 - Pragmatics and Cognition 6 (1):99-120.
The term 'referring expression' is often used without definition, and models of referring usually ignore the question of how NP's are recognized as referring expressions in discourse. In this paper, I review some relevant distinctions from the research in generics and, on that basis, provide a definition of referring expressions as specific and non-kind-referring noun phrases. I discuss some complications to the definition. Using Kronfeld's model of referring as my framework, I discuss the interaction of the recognition of referring expressions (...)

Care and its constraints: Will care work pass through Pettit’s gate?Simon Laumann Jørgensen - 2018 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 44 (3):278-301.
Welfare states are in a care crisis both in the sense of a practical care gap and in the new movement to limit care to mere rehabilitation. Few political theorists pay attention to these developments, and those who do say little about the potential limits to care. This article discusses Philip Pettit’s theory of social justice in relation to questions of public care provisions. Pettit’s theory has been praised by feminists for its attention to social injustices and because it highlights (...)

Not your problem? Exploring the relationship between problem formulation and social responsibility.Sveinung Jørgensen & Lars Jacob Tynes - 2011 - Etikk I Praksis - Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics 1 (1):31-50.
This article explores the relationship between organizationalproblem formulation and social responsibility. Thepurpose of the article is to illuminate how organizationalproblem formulations determine the manner in whichthe organization attempts to solve the problem and involve the ascription of significance to a group of stakeholdersseen as relevant for the organization. This has implicationsfor the degree to which they assume responsibilityfor those stakeholders. We discuss three dimensions ofresponsible decision making – rationality in goal attainment, reverence for ethical norms, and respect for stakeholders.Thereby, we arrive (...)

The notion of a correctness of names in Plato’s Cratylus. Arguments for a basic distinction.Steffen Lund Jørgensen - 2019 - Methodos. Savoirs Et Textes 19.
This paper offers arguments against Francesco Ademollo’s redundancy thesis about the notion of the correctness of names in the Cratylus. The paper distinguishes between two versions of the redundancy thesis and provides arguments against each of them. In addition to supporting the rejection of both versions of the redundancy thesis, the arguments provide new interpretations of important issues inside and outside of the Cratylus. These issues include the philological evidence from the Classical period, the view of correctness expressed by Plato’s (...)

This book is an interdisciplinary anthology dealing with sign language. It is meant to give some insight into basic philosophical and cultural issues related to sign language, and thus to provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the importance of sign language as language. The 14 authors come from various professional academic disciplines (philosophy, education, linguistics, social anthropology, political science and theology being some of them) and from a variety of professions within the Deaf community (interpreting, translation, pastorate, sign language research, (...)
