Screening the Psychological Laboratory: Hugo Münsterberg, Psychotechnics, and the Cinema, 1892–1916.Jeremy Blatter - 2015 - Science in Context 28 (1):53-76.
According to Hugo Münsterberg, the direct application of experimental psychology to the practical problems of education, law, industry, and art belonged by definition to the domain of psychotechnics. Whether in the form of pedagogical prescription, interrogation technique, hiring practice, or aesthetic principle, the psychotechnical method implied bringing the psychological laboratory to bear on everyday life. There were, however, significant pitfalls to leaving behind the putative purity of the early psychological laboratory in pursuit of technological utility. In the Vocation Bureau, (...)

Modern templates of happiness: performing spiritualism and psychotechnics in Denmark.Peter Triantafillou & Afonso Moreira - 2005 - History of the Human Sciences 18 (2):87-109.
Inspired by Michel Foucault’s notion of subjugated knowledge, this paper elaborates an analytical framework seeking to unsettle the authority of contemporary psychology. This framework focuses on the performative dimension of psychology and other ‘psy-regimes’, namely the practices and actions that may be undertaken on the basis of these forms of knowledge. We probe this framework by exploring the emergence, utilization and demise of spiritualism (1880s to 1920s) and psychotechnics (1920s to 1960s) in Denmark. On the basis of this framework, (...)

Primordial Haptics, 1925–1935: Hands, Tools and the Psychotechnics of Prehistory.Max Stadler - 2022 - Body and Society 28 (1-2):60-90.
Psychotechnics’, Weimar Germany’s science du jour, typically is framed as a symptom of ‘technological media’ – obscuring the persistent significance of ‘dexterity’, ‘skill’ and ‘manual labour’ at the time. More broadly, there is a tendency to construe ‘the haptic’ as predominantly a casualty of modernity: skilled hands replaced by conveyor belts; skilled hands defended by the rearguard actions of arts-and-crafts movements; skilled hands destroyed by industrialized warfare. Drawing on contemporary investigations into the ‘organ of touch’, this essay aims to (...)

  5. Between Thanatos and Eros: Erich Fromm and the psychoanalysis of social networking technology use.Jean du Toit - 2019 - South African Journal of Philosophy 38 (2):136-148.
Social networking technologies have become a ubiquitous framework for social interaction, serving to organise much of the individual’s social life. Such technological structuring affects not merely the individual’s psyche (as a psychotechnics), it also affects broader aspects of society (as a socio-technics). While social networking technologies may serve to transform society in positive ways, such technologies also have the potential to significantly encroach upon and (re) construct individual and cultural meaning in ways that must be investigated. Erich Fromm, who (...)

Zum Begriff und zur Diagnose der Persönlichkeit in den „Personality Tests“.Ernst Schachtel - 1937 - Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung 6 (3):597-624.
This article is a critical analysis of personality tests. It analyzes the methods used in diagnosing personality and investigates the concept of personality which is implied in them. The conduct of such tests is described and their relationship to psychotechnics and behaviorism indicated. Their claim to precision in the understanding of personality is tested and it is demonstrated that the object of this knowledge is not the structure of the personality but only certain superficial aspects of human behavior. In (...)
