This paper is focused on the theory of drives, particularly on its economic model, which was an integral part of Freud’s original formulation. Freud was aiming to make a link between the psychic energy of drives and the biophysical rules of nature. However, he was not able to develop this model into a comprehensive system linking the body and the mind. The further development of psychoanalytic theory, in various attempts to comprehend the theory of drives, can be described as taking (...) different approaches. Some of them equate drives with bodily impulses, others abandon the economic model, a few stay with Freud’s original model. I believe that the Friston notion of free energy and the hierarchical model of the brain allows us to develop this model and to integrate the economic model into some contemporary theories of drives. I argue against those theories equating drives with biological impulses. My arguments are supported by Freud’s project itself but also by recent developments within neuro-psychoanalysis describing the process of mentalizing homeostasis, interoceptive signals and relations with caregivers. I argue for those theories which see the drives as psychic forces, which through developmental processes and cathexes acquire aims and objects, and become intertwined with impulses originating internally and externally, such as affect, interoceptive impulses, perception of the external world, and impulses from erotogenic zones in particular. Here, I present my analysis of the compatibility and consistency of free energy and the hierarchical model perspective, and two psychoanalytical traditions of thoughts: French psychoanalysis and the post-Kleinian school of British psychoanalysis. In particular, my analysis focuses on the contemporary Kleinian notion of unconscious phantasies, especially Bronstein’s description of their semiotic aspects. Secondly, I look at Segal’s view of drives as dialectic forces of adaptation vs. conservatism. Analyzing the French tradition, I focus on Green’s perspective on the drives, Lacan’s distinction between drives and desire, and Penot’s description of the process of subjectivation. I conclude that free energy, as described by Friston, can be seen as a source of the drives’ energy and the process of minimizing it is an equivalent of what Freud described as binding the free energy, in which psychic unbound energy acquires distinctive features and becomes bound. The author analyses the relation between the literary character and the place in Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s Most. Z kroniki naszego miasta. The author attempts to prove that places shown by Herling-Grudziński play a significant role in the writer’s biography and also influence the way of acting and decisions of literary characters created by the writer. Using geopoetics as its starting point, this perspective puts emphasis on the category of place considered in both geographic and literary dimension. In her interpretation of (...) the short story by Herling-Grudziński, the author attempts to show that the bridge affects the life of the main character, his behaviour and attitude to the world. The article also offers a summary of critical approaches to the presentation of space motifs in the literary works of Herling-Grudziński. The context for the analysis is provided by the writer’s biography which highlights his personal experience connected with private places. The analytical key to unlock their senses is taken from geopoetics as the perspective which may enable us to find new content in the unique literary output of Herling-Grudziński. (shrink)

Artykuł dotyczy kilku aspektów korespondencji Gustawa Waliszewskiego, skierowanej do Juliana Bartoszewicza w latach 1853–1855 i stanowiącej obecnie część Archiwum rodziny Bartoszewiczów z Archiwum Państwowego w Łodzi. Listy, obejmujące 163 karty, scharakteryzowane zostały z kilku perspektyw: a) biograficznej, która daje wgląd w osobowość młodego, ledwie zaczynającego karierę naukową człowieka, marzącego o karierze „narodowego Thierry’ego”; b) genetycznej, która listy traktuje jako materiał dokumentujący proces twórczy nad studiami historycznymi i felietonami dla „Dziennika Warszawskiego”, a także opisuje zmagania debiu­tanta z ograniczeniami cenzuralnymi; c) prasoznawczej (...) – związanej z obszernie eksplorowaną w listach tematyką rozwoju „Dziennika Warszawskiego”, jego rywalizacji z „Gazetą Warszawską” i walki o wpływy pisma na prowincji. Dodat­kowym kontekstem staje się cykl artykułów wspomnieniowych poświęconych Waliszewskiemu autorstwa Juliana Bartoszewicza, które stanowią swoiste dopełnienie niezachowanego bloku listów Bartoszewicza do Waliszewskiego. An interview with Wiesław Chrzanowski, a member of the Home Army’s “Gustaw” unit. Chrzanowski recounts the political situation in Europe at the time and the Soviet Union’s and Allies’ stance towards the Warsaw Uprising. He is also critical towards the uprising’s commanders, who launched it without adequate preparation.

Die Autorin des Beitrags analysiert und interpretiert die Erzählung Święty Smok von Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. Sie berücksichtigt Fragestellungen die mit der Erzähltechnik, der Erzählinstanz und der Figurenkonstruktion Zusammenhängen, indem sie die charakteristischen Merkmale und Eigenschaften des zu besprechenden Textes hervorhebt, welche sich übrigens als typisch für die gesamte Kurzprosa von Herling-Grudziński erweisen (z.B.: die Binnenerzählung, das Streben nach der Authentizität in verschiedenen Textschichten, besonders in der Kreation des Haupterzählers als Entsprechung des Autors). Die Autorin erörtert die Haltung sowie das Drama (...) des Haupthelden – des Hirten Scuro – samt seiner Relationen zu der von ihm gegründeten religiösen Sekte und den übrigen Einwohnern des Heimatdorfes nicht nur durch das Prisma der vom Text hervorgerufenen interpretatorischen Suggestionen, sondern rekurriert auf Thesen von Denkern – wie Freud, Fromm und James – welche die Bedingungen, den Charakter, die Mechanismen und Motivationen des Glaubens, der religiösen Praxis, der Bekehrungen und der Apostasie erläutern. Eine derart analytisch-interpretatorische Erfassung der Erzählung zeigt die Überzeitlichkeit der vom Autor dargestellten menschlichen Haltungen und ihres Verlangen nach dem höheren existentiellen Sinn – der metaphysischen Begründung, deren Erfüllung oft mit dem Fiasko endet oder sich als auf falsche Prämissen gestützt zeigt. The paper discusses the impact of the thought of Stanisław Brzozowski (1878–1911) on several Polish emigré writers, including Józef Czapski and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, but first of all Czesław Miłosz (1911–2004) and Aleksander Wat (1900–1967). Miłosz’ approach oscillated between early fascination through an unjust rejection during the war, due to the “appropriation” of Brzozowski’s thought by the right wing publicists, to the new phase of fascination after the war, culminating in the publication of a book on Brzozowski ( A Man (...) Among Scorpions , 1962) and prolonged in several important articles till the very end of his life. Wat’s approach shifted from the communist practice of “overcoming” Brzozowski through the affirmation of his criticism and rejection of catholic obscurantism to the process of the internalization of the catholic faith.
