For the last twenty years Luis Prieto, in his published work in French, has reiterated that the systematic study of the codes (other than natural languages) which were invented by men for communication purposes is in and of itself an undertaking essential for an understanding of both the laws of communication in general and of the mechanisms of these systems of communication—the totality of which would make up the (Saussurian) semiology of communication (Prieto 1966, 1968, 1975). Among these systems the (...) symbols of chemistry—referred to as such for a long time— and their combinatory rules constitute a very ancient code or series of codes (Crosland, 1962). Up to now this code has not been subjected to a genuine semiological study, except for the essay by Dagognet (1969, see Mounin 1970) which is more literary or poetical and metaphysical than scientific. Jean-Pierre Changeux's Neuronal Man attempts to define mental activity, that is thought, with respect to the neurophysiology of the brain.*Since antiquity, the historical account of these problems has undergone the examination of classical notions: what is a mental image, a concept, a representation? Changeux, who accepts these traditional points of departure, as well as the notion of signification, aims to clarify the physical, neurophysiological counterparts of these notions, in order to arrive at less simplistic terms: image de memoire “memory image,” (...) later - objet mental “mental object,” and still later - objet de mémoire “memory object.” Behind these terms lies transition to neurophysiology, with the notion of engram, and finally with the notion of trace, a notion which is precise but very general, since the substantive reality of these traces, their anatomy and physiology in the brain has yet to be determined. Cet ouvrage part de la pratique des dictionnaires, de certains concepts de la sémantique structurale et de ce que la rhétorique appelle " figures de style " ou " tropes " pour élaborer une théorie de la description du sens des lexèmes qui soit à la fois cohérente et efficace et qui explique notamment comment le signifié d'une unité significative donnée peut présenter, en énoncé, des effets de sens différents et même des significations différentes. Ne se limitant pas à la (...) signification des unités lexicales, il envisage les particularités sémantiques de trois grandes classes de morphèmes, le verbe, le nom et l'adjectif, et précise comment les principales fonctions syntaxiques contribuent à la signification de l'énoncé. Il montre enfin que cette signification de l'énoncé est plus que la simple somme des significations des morphèmes qui le constituent et correspond à une structuration précise et spécifique de l'information. S'adressant avant tout aux étudiants en lettres modernes, en sciences du langage et en langues vivantes, qui doivent analyser le vocabulaire de la langue sur laquelle ils travaillent et auxquels il est souvent demandé de définir le sens des mots d'un texte, il explicite également tous les concepts sémantiques et lexicologiques qu'il utilise.
