Advances in transplantation have extended the life and relieved the suffering of thousands of individuals. The prospect of being able to use tissues from embryos, as well as from anencephalic newborns, offers the promise of further relief of suffering. However, these possibilities raise significant moral and public policy issues. The question arises of the extent to which those who disapprove of abortion may make use of tissues derived from abortion in order to treat serious diseases. This essay argues that, with (...) proper safeguards, such tissue can be used without cooperating in abortion. That is, even those who oppose abortion can benefit from the use of tissue procured during abortion. Questions also arise regarding the probity of maintaining a pregnancy in order to produce an anencephalic newborn whose biological existence will be maintained so as better to secure organs once death is declared. It is argued that, since no harm can be done to a being that has neither a sense of self or the capacity to feel pain, and since women have a right to forego abortions, there is no legitimate ground for opposing women's seeking meaning in their pregnancy through maximizing the opportunity of others to use the organs of their anencephalic newborn once death has been declared. Finally, it is argued that, since the capacities for sentience, a minimal condition for personhood, are never realized by an anencephalic, the entity has never been alive as a person. Therefore, there should be no opposition in principle to aborting anencephalics nor, after proper declaration, to making their organs available as one would after whole-brain death, despite the continued functioning of the brain stem. It is no longer possible to claim that the biological characteristics of the future adult are already determined at conception. After all, a zygote may develop into a hydatidiform mole rather than into a human being. The development of an individual human person is determined by genetically and nongenetically coded molecules within the embryo, together with the influence of the maternal environment. Este artículo ofrece una exégesis de la conversación que Sócrates conduce con Céfalo y Polemarco en el libro I de la República en torno a la adecuada definición de la justicia. En el curso de esta conversación emergen gradualmente algunos ingredientes definitorios que por su básico carácter estructural se insinúan como constituyentes de obligatoria inclusión en cualquier tentativa auspiciosa de definición de la justicia. La aparición de estos ingredientes en el curso de la conversación se encuentra entreverada con la (...) de otros componentes más notorios para el lector cuanto más controvertibles. El artículo se propone un escrutinio de los primeros más que un análisis de estos últimos. No se concentra en el correspondiente estudio de las refutaciones a las que Sócrates somete finalmente la definición de la justicia de Polemarco. La interpretación que aquí se ofrece opta, así, por un énfasis algo inusual en las interpretaciones de esta primera parte del libro I de la República. In the course of that conversation some defining elements gradually emerge. Because of their structural character, they display themselves as constituents which cannot be overlooked in any auspicious attempt to define justice. The emergence of these ingredients in the course of the conversation is intertwined with that of other components, the more controversial they are, the more noteworthy they turn out to be. The paper intends to scrutinize the former rather than analyze the latter. It does not focus on the corresponding study of Socrates’ refutations on Polemarchus’ definition of justice. Este estudo se ocupa com algumas questões do prólogo do Parmênides, que, em geral, passam desapercebidas, mas são importantes para a compreensão da arquitetônica do diálogo. Haverá de ter, por exemplo, algum significado o fato de Platão trazer para dentro do Diálogo, Céfalo de Clazômenas, que veio para Atenas encontrar Antífon e ouvir dele um relato de Pitodoros sobre o que Parmênides e Zenão, vindos de Eleia, confabularam com Sócrates em Atenas. Clazômenas é a terra de Anaxágoras, daquele que, (...) a convite de Péricles, fundou em Atenas uma escola filosófica. Do debate que ocorreu entre Parmênides, Zenão e Sócrates, na casa de Pitodoros, foi Pitodoros, quem, por primeiro, registrou de memória; depois ele passou a Antífon, e, Antífon, passou a Céfalo, que, enfim, veio a ser, e não o irmão de Platão, o relator do Diálogo. Há, pois, um fluxo de personagens e de regiões que compõem o Diálogo. Há ainda algo inusitado: Zenão, perante Sócrates e seus companheiros, na casa de Pitodoros, fez uma leitura de seus “escritos”, dos quais, no final, Sócrates pediu a Zenão que relesse apenas “o primeiro argumento”: o do paradoxo do Um e do Múltiplo, tema sobre o qual incidiram o debate e a construção do Diálogo. Este estudo cumpre três etapas: comenta o introito, esboça a tratativa do Um e do Múltiplo e ensaia algumas possibilidades de leitura e de interpretação do Parmênides. (shrink)

A discussão entre Trasímaco e Sócrates no Livro I da República de Platão dá vigor à questão da justiça iniciada com Céfalo. Trasímaco é um personagem importante da obra, pois vai relacionar a justiça ao governo da cidade. Isso faz com que a justiça saia da esfera individual e entre na esfera pública. Em nosso artigo, pretendemos verificar as teses de Trasímaco sobre a justiça e se estas são consistentes entre si. O problema da consistência das teses é antigo (...) entre os comentadores e apresenta diferentes soluções. Nosso intuito é propor uma solução para o problema e relacionar isto à arte do governo proposta por Trasímaco. Isso nos permite verificar a maneira pela qual Sócrates e Trasímaco diferem entre si em suas propostas de governo e dos tipos de governante. Desse modo, nosso trabalho pretende contribuir com a literatura platonista sobre o papel ocupado por Trasímaco dentro da obra de Platão. (shrink)
