Instead, the phrase has evolved into a common signifier for the US and China, suggesting that, despite their rivalries, the North Korean nuclear issue can be detrimental for both nuclear-free’ seriously, recasting the phrase as borne of both mutual scepticism, (...) as well as convergent interests, over the Korean Peninsula. In Greek and Roman sources, Tartessos designates a geographical area and a legendary kingdom that flourished in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula between the eighth and seventh centuries BCE. For decades, much research on pre-Roman Iberia has gravitated around the nature of Tartessos as an historical or mythical polity, its possible location, and the archaeological identification of Tartessic material culture. It seems now increasingly clear that what the Greeks called Tartessos was inextricably linked to the presence of Phoenician (...) culture in the area. It is thus only fitting that the first book about the subject to be published in English approaches the evidence with a special focus on patterns and phenomena of cultural and economic contact between the Phoenicians and the locals. North Korea is under strict UN economic sanctions because it violated UN policy in its development of nuclear weapons and long range missiles as well as for its militant rhetoric. South Korea and Japan, as close allies of the USA, are unsure of the future. Is there a way to bring some peace and stability to the Korean peninsula? Some argue that this is a hopeless task as long as the current leadership of North Korea is in power. This (...) article takes a more positive stance and outlines a possible way forward. The study, following the position of the Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research, assumes that the conflict is at root one over ideology and power. The leadership of North Korea understands itself as “a revolutionary and socialist state” and is determined to continue to control the country through a rigorous and sometimes brutal government oversight of the culture. Although poverty and hunger are widespread, the people have little opportunity to be heard. What if the leaders of North Korea were persuaded that they could gain legitimacy through developing a dynamic economy that brought flourishing to their people and respect by fellow-nations in the global village? The article proposes to start this new adventure by developing enterprise zones in the North that would bring jobs and food to hundreds of thousands of North Koreans. To begin this project, there would need to be dramatic steps toward denuclearization on the part of the North in order to relax the UN economic sanctions. Is it possible? Historical demographic research shows that the factors influencing mortality risk are labile across time and space. This is particularly true for datasets that span societal transitions. Here, we seek to understand how marriage, migration, and the local economy influenced mortality dynamics in a rapidly changing environment characterized by high in-migration and male-biased sex ratios. Mortality records were extracted from a compendium of historical vital records for the Baja California peninsula (Mexico). Our sample consists of 1,201 mortality records spanning AD (...) 1835–1900. Findings from Cox proportional hazard models indicate that (1) marriage was associated with a protective effect for both sexes; (2) residing in a mining town was associated with higher mortality for men, but not women; (3) migration was associated with decreased mortality risk for women, but not men; and (4) the risk of mortality increased in the face of infectious disease, but decreased over time. Despite the early initiation of reproduction for women, marriage had a protective effect, likely because marriage linked women to resources. Although mining boomtowns were associated with elevated risk factors generally, only men experienced greater mortality risk, likely due to dangerous working conditions that women did not experience. Last, female, but not male, migrants experienced greater longevity, possibly because exposure to harsh labor conditions eroded the protective effect of selection bias for men. Together, these results shed light on an understudied historical population and broaden our understanding of demographic dynamics in preindustrial settings. (shrink)

The control of various introduced species brings to the fore questions around how species are categorised as ‘native’ or ‘invasive’, belonging or not belonging. In far north Queensland, Australia, the Cape York region is a complex mixture of land tenures, including pastoral leases, National Parks and Aboriginal land, and overlapping management agreements. Weed control comprises much of the work that land managers in Cape York do. However, different land managers target different introduced species for control, and the ways in which (...) certain species are understood as more or less problematic indicate how land managers understand and seek to order landscapes. Through investigating the various positions that introduced species occupy, I will explore how Cape York emerges as a ‘hybrid landscape’ that is produced in contested, overlapping and ambiguous ways, and is rife with ‘feral dynamics’. Locri Epizephiri, a city-state on the Ionian Sea, established settlements on the Tyrrhenian coast and routes across the peninsula of Calabria. Although some scholars have questioned the importance of land routes over the peninsula, this study indicates these itineraries were vital, particularly during the Classical period when Locri came into conflict with Rhegium, master of the Straits of Messina. This study examines Locri’s struggles for supremacy of the Tyrrhenian coast and investigates the major routes in Locri’s territory between (...) the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. This chapter discusses the overall paradigmatic distribution of gaps in the Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula. It revisits the Spanish data from a historical and comparative perspective, considering the closely related language, Portuguese. Ibero-Romance paradigm gaps are determined by the lexical rarity and the morphemic patterning. Paradigm gaps are also affected by ‘low speaker confidence’. This behaviour defines the avoidance of allomorphy even in the absence of reasonable grounds to expect the occurrence of allomorphy. Such behaviour is triggered (...) by the speaker's sensitivity to a major distributional pattern of root allomorphy in Spanish and Portuguese such as that in non-first conjunction verbs, the first person singular present indicative together with all persons and numbers of the present subjunctive in shared root allomorph. In addition to determining the defectiveness in the Ibero-Romance languages, the chapter also provides a discussion on the general domains and determinants of defectiveness. (shrink)

Oases have served as sacred landscapes and sources of ritual plants in arid regions of the Old and New Worlds. We evaluate the Jesuit mission oases of the Baja California peninsula for their role in agrobiodiversity persistence, and extend theories of sacred landscapes and biodiversity conservation to agricultural species and practices. Jesuit missionaries on the peninsula introduced a suite of crops species and agricultural and water management systems that persist in the oases and have become an integral part (...) of the cultural and religious identity of the peninsula. The sacred landscapes of the oases are defined by elements of the Jesuit mission systems, such as water capture systems and irrigation canals, stone field borders and terraces, field gardens or huertas, groves of olive trees and date palms, and multi-tiered agroecosystems. Sacred practices—including pilgrimages, religious rites, and Catholic-based community celebrations—depend on the integrated “landscapes” of the oases and on the ritual use of wild and cultivated oasis plant species. We propose that some, though not all, of the peninsula oases may be considered as sacred landscapes responsible for maintaining heritage crop species, biodiversity, and traditional farming and foodways practices. In this paper, we analyze the astronomical tables in al-Zīj al-Muqtabis by Ibn al-Kammād (early twelfth century, Córdoba), based on the Latin and Hebrew versions of the lost Arabic original, each of which is extant in a unique manuscript. We present excerpts of many tables and pay careful attention to their structure and underlying parameters. The main focus, however, is on the impact al-Muqtabis had on the astronomy that developed in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghrib and, more generally, (...) on the transmission and diffusion of Indian astronomy in the West after the arrival of al-Khwārizmī’s astronomical tables in al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) in the tenth century. This tradition of Indian origin competed with the Greek tradition represented by al-Battānī’s astronomical tables and was much more alive in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghrib than previously thought. From Spain, the Indian tradition entered mainstream European astronomy, where we find echoes of it in all versions of the Alfonsine Tables, both in manuscript and in the printed editions (beginning in 1483), as well as in Copernicus’s De Revolutionibus, published in 1543. American university globalization has increasingly targeted and been courted by authoritarian states. While the reasons for these partnerships are manifold—including the ease of top-down large-scale monetary investment, “knowledge economy” development strategies, social engineering programs, and other corporate and imperial entanglements—an overwhelming discourse has emerged around higher education initiatives in places like the Arabian Peninsula, China, Singapore, and Central Asia that juxtaposes liberalism with the illiberal, authoritarian contexts it is supposedly encountering within the framework of neoliberal globalization. Through a discussion (...) of American branch campuses in Qatar and the UAE, this article traces a more complex web of actors whose interests may include neoliberal and imperial inclinations but are not reducible to them. By focusing on the discursive framings of these branch campus initiatives, we show how the notion of “liberal education” operates as a global discourse of power through American branch campuses in the Arabian Peninsula and, by extension, other nondemocratic states around the world. Specifically, we argue that the very concept of “authoritarianism” is discursively produced in and through these university projects, and simultaneously builds an idealized narrative about the national self in the United States that erases existing and emerging inequalities—indeed, authoritarianisms—within the home spaces of American academia. This paper presents a hitherto unknown early Arabic-Latin bilingual lead seal depicting a peace pact. The similarities of the Latin signs on one of its faces with those found on a Visigothic monetary issue attributed to the city of Seville, lead us to suggest that this seal could be from the earliest phase of the Umayyad conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, and that it probably alludes to the first peace pact established by Mūsā b. Nuṣayr with that city.

In the mid-1970s, the fascist-leaning dictatorships in Spain (1939–1977) and Portugal (1933–1974) fell. Closely linked to the 1973 oil crisis, debates over energy and technology policies became very prominent during the ensuing political redefinition of both countries. Two decades after the first international agreements between the Iberian regimes and the United States for the development of nuclear programs, a myriad of movements of social resistance to nuclear technology emerged in dialogue with anti-nuclear organizations in other European countries. Fun and playfulness (...) have been used for top–down popularization and banalization of nuclear technologies since the 1950s, but here pleasant forms of resistance also played a central role in contesting national energy plans, expert discourses, and vested interests. This article explores what we call “anti-nuclear fun,” the use of amusement, play, and humor as political and epistemic tools to familiarize society with the exceptional and daily risks of the “peaceful atom.”. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever o grau de parentesco existente entre várias famílias de origem chinesa que se estabeleceram em Nicoya e analisar como isso influenciou suas contribuições para o desenvolvimento socioeconômico da cidade e seus padrões de mobilidade em todo o Pacífico da Costa Rica desde final do século XIX até meados do século XX. Os participantes do estudo são descendentes de imigrantes que se enraizaram em Nicoya entre 1880 e 1950, que possuíam duas peculiaridades: pertenciam aos mesmos (...) clãs familiares, apesar dos diferentes sobrenomes com os quais estavam registrados ou eram da mesma área geográfica e, às vezes, até da mesma aldeia, que desenvolveu laços de afinidade tão fortes quanto laços consanguíneos. Isso lhes permitiu apoiar-se mutuamente para alcançar o desenvolvimento coletivo do grupo de imigrantes chineses em Nicoya. (shrink)

이번 연구는 한국 다문화 사회에서 한반도 통일의 가치토대를 어떻게 확립할 것인지를 탐구하는데 주요 목적이 있다. 이번 연구의 주제는 다문화 구성원들, 특히 북한 주민들과 새터민, 외국인 노동자, 국제결혼 이주자 및 그 자녀들이 과연 한번도 통일의 가치를 공유할 수 있는지, 즉 한민족 정체성과 그것의 가치분담이다. 이를 위해 이번 연구에서는 ‘문화 개념의 다문화 수준별 적용’에 관한 기존의 연구논문을 활용하고, 그 한계를 밝히며, 이를 보완할 수 있는 하나의 대안으로서 ‘정서(emotion)'의 다문화적 적용 가능성을 제시해보고자 한다. 기존의 문화 개념의 적용의 양상은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문화 개념을 (...) ‘의미의 패턴’으로 간주하는 경향으로서 주로 상징과 해석에 초점을 둔다. 이는 주로 타문화를 이해하는데 유용한 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 예컨대, 국제결혼 이주민이 초기 한국 사회의 정착시기에 한국 사회를 이해하는 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 문화 개념을 지속적인 완전성을 향한 과정으로 이해하는 경향으로서, 이는 주로 자문화를 확인하는 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 예컨대, 국제결혼 이주민이 한국 사회에 정착하면서 본격적인 삶을 영위할 때 ‘한국인’으로서 정체성을 확인하는 방식이다. 하지만 이와 같은 기존의 연구성과를 북한 주민, 새터민, 국제결혼 이주민 가정의 자녀에게 적용했을 때에는 일정한 한계가 보인다. 첫째, 북한 주민들은 현재 북한 정권의 특성상, 다문화 사회에 대한 거부감이 크고, 단일민족주의를 이데올로기적 차원에서 이해할 가능성이 매우 크다. 즉 북한 주민들이 자문화 차원에서 민족정체성을 강하게 확인하더라고, 매우 폐쇄적이라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 새터민의 경우에는 자문화 확인의 정도는 강하지만, 한국 사회의 정착과정에서 경험하게 되는 사회경제적 차별로 인해 자신들만의 정체성 확인에 그친다. 셋째, 국제결혼 이주민 가정의 자녀들과 그 부모들은 모두가 ‘한국인’이라는 정체성 수준은 매우 높았다. 다만 이주민 부모의 경우에는 자신들의 문화에 대한 정체성은 그대로 유지하고 있었다. 그러나 순혈주의의 측면에서 이들 모두에 대한 차별적 인식은 여전히 강하게 남아 있는 실정이다. 한반도 통일에 대한 가치의 토대는 다문화 구성원들 모두가 분담할 수 있는 ‘정체성’의 문제이다. 이를 삶의 영역에서 확인하고 전개할 수 있는 방안은 각 구성원들의 특성들을 모두 고려할 수 있을 때에만 가능하다. 기존 연구의 문화 개념을 다문화 수준별로 접근했을 때 근본적인 문제는 내면적으로 구성원들 모두가 한국 다문화 사회에서 한민족 정체성에 대한 어떤 공통된 분담을 가질 수 있는지에 대한 답을 명료하게 제시하지 못했다. 이런 점에서 다문화 사회에서 한반도 통일의 가치토대는 외면적이고 제도적인 문제라기보다는 내면적이고 정체성에 관한 문제이다. 이 문제는 결국 다문화 구성원들이 관계의 삶의 영역에서 도덕적 행위자라는 점에서 이들의 정서가 문화적으로 전개되는 과정에서 보다 세밀하게 진행되어야 할 것이다. La investigación sobre el trazado intelectual de las rutas latinas europeas hacia la península ibérica con anterioridad al s. XIII está aportando algunos hallazgos particularmente interesantes. En este artículo se aborda un estudio de caso vinculado a la transmisión e intercambio del saber que, muy lejos de haber sido desentrañado, continúa apareciendo como un problema complejo que requiere de nuevas aproximaciones epistemológicas ‒si lo que se pretende es alcanzar un encuadre congruente del problema. El estudio de las rutas de intercambio (...) intelectual en la península ibérica en los siglos IX-XII ‒fundamentalmente, textos doctrinales latinos en circulación dentro del territorio de al-Andalus y entre comunidades de cristianos arabizados‒ nos lleva a pensar que algunas de las conclusiones que se habían propuesto sobre las influencias doctrinales presentes en el Tathlīth al-waḥdāniyyah no pueden constatarse: poner en relación la Theologia Summi boni de Pedro Abelardo con la tríada “poder” (qudrah), “conocimiento” (ʿilm) y “voluntad” (irādah) que el anónimo autor emplea para caracterizar los atributos de las tres personas de la Trinidad. Se han propuesto nuevas hipótesis sobre una vía de influencia que llegaría a través de la tríada empleada por Hugo de san Víctor en el De tribus diebus, cuya línea de influencia habría que situarla en la tríada empleada por Ambrosio de Milán, tal y como ha sido planteado por Dominique Poirel. No obstante, investigaciones más recientes proponen nuevas vías de penetración doctrinal en la Península que, en cierto modo, comparten la tríada de Ambrosio pero que habrían llegado a la Península (al-Andalus en particular) por vías de intercambio textual y doctrinal procedentes de Oriente Próximo y de origen griego. A lo largo de este trabajo se presentan hipótesis y resultados llevados a cabo en investigaciones previas, así como una recapitulación e hipótesis de investigaciones en curso. Se trata de una nota de investigación que no posee un carácter conclusivo, antes bien, pretende aportar nuevas vías de aproximación al problema. (shrink)

This paper explores the relationship between the development of art and sport in the Arabian Peninsula. In particular, it will be argued that both sport and art can be understood in terms of a trajectory from the ‘modern’ to the ‘contemporary’. Modernity and modernism are introduced through an interpretation of Paul Delaunay’s series of paintings ‘The Cardiff Team’ (1912–22) which may be read as an expression of modernity. The content of the paintings documents core elements of European modernist culture, (...) including technology and science, leisure, consumerism and advertising, and crucially (international) sport. Delaunay’s work provides a background from which to reflect upon the development of sport into something like its contemporary form, in early 20th Europe. By drawing on Terry Smith’s analysis of the difference between modern and contemporary art, and applying this to sport, in order to suggest that there is a distinctive contemporary form of sport, the core tensions within both artistic and sporting practices are argued to lie in the movement from a conception of sport as an expression of modernity, where this is conceived as a universal movement, exemplified by Western humanism, towards a conception of sport as something particularised, expressive of local cultures. The promotion of art institutions and sports events within the Arabian Peninsula highlights the resultant tensions between the neo-colonial influence of Western culture and the reinterpretation of that culture, locally, in order to reflect upon and articulate communal identity within the contexts of globalism and transnationalism. La destrucción de arte rupestre en la península Burrup, llevada a cabo por varias industrias colosales, estratégicamente localizadas en la península desde la década de los años sesenta, me permite analizar el concepto de patrimonio y encontrar un significado en la difícil tarea de interpretar arte rupestre. La península Burrup no sólo alberga el sitio arqueológico de arte rupestre más grande del mundo, sino que también uno de los depósitos más grandes de gas, mineral de hierro y sal. Como consecuencia, (...) la tierra (sagrada para la comunidad aborigen), se ha convertido en un punto álgido ya que sostiene la economía creciente de Australia. En esta difícil negociación entre patrimonio y progreso, el arte rupestre encuentra nuevos significados y el patrimonio se torna efímero. Al no estar el sitio incluido en la lista de Patrimonio Mundial auspiciada por la UNESCO, los roles de identidad y memoria son impugnados por los dos grupos que representan ambos lados del debate: por un lado, los dueños tradicionales aborígenes y los arqueólogos; por el otro, el gobierno australiano y el es-tablecimiento cultural que le niega al arte rupestre una significancia estética al considerarlo “primitivo” y “arcaico”. El debate se torna cada vez más pertinente al darnos cuenta de que el gobierno australiano ha propuesto otros sitios y parques naturales para su introducción en la lista de Patrimonio Mundial, mientras que el arte rupestre de la península Burrup está catalogado como patrimonio nacional, mas no mundial. Como resultado, el concepto de patrimonio se puede definir en diferentes niveles: local, nacional e internacional. (shrink)

With agriculture the primary driver of biodiversity loss, farmers are increasingly expected to produce environmental outcomes and protect biodiversity. However, lack of attention to the way farmers perceive native vegetation has resulted in conservation targets not being met. The Yorke Peninsula (YP), South Australia, is an agricultural landscape where 50% farmers perceived that long-term planning was for ≤ 30 years, not enough time to promote ecosystem conservation; (5) a lack of natural resource management information for farmers—as a result, farmers (...) relied on their own experience to manage vegetation. Furthermore, most farmers depended on agronomists, who generally had no stake in biodiversity conservation. We recommend that (1) the Local Council restore social capital by liaising with farmers to promote roadside vegetation (2) long-term farmer-led conservation action be established and supported by Government and industry acting as facilitators rather than project managers; (3) a change in policy and training promote the involvement of agronomists in conservation and its management on private properties; (4) all levels of Government develop schemes to demonstrate the tangible benefits of native vegetation as habitat for wildlife; (5) on-farm conservation be celebrated as successful farming. A partir de los conceptos de carácter, virtud y amistad propuestos por la ética de la ficción de Wayne Booth, realizamos un análisis comparativo entre los efectos éticos provocados por el territorio y la música en las novelas Península, Península de Hernán Lara Zavala y en El llamado de los tunk’ules de Marisol Ceh Moo. Sugerimos que, a pesar de estar ante dos novelas que comparten el mismo contexto geo-histórico, los efectos éticos causados por el territorio y la música, bajo (...) la idea de Yucatán, guardan diferencias que ameritan llevar a cabo una co- ducción para dilucidar el tipo de compañía literaria que nos ofrecen.
