Abstract

The essay engages with a decolonial aesthetics that goes against neo-tribalist notions of cultural difference, arguing that it is up for African Studies to look at the world from a former province and turn it into a center, reading ‘Africa’ in the very same terms as we read everywhere else. Taking major inspiration from the discipline of Media Philosophy, the essay focusses on Cape Town punk rock in order to go beyond any ‘authentic’ understanding of the Other and all hermeneutics of meaning that for so long have been the epistemological foundation of colonial discourse.
