The Ethics of Counseling the Dying-The Reflections and Constructions from the Personal Experiences of Caring Terminally Ill Cancer Patients

Abstract

Inherent in the consultative ethics code applicable to end-stage cancer patients? End of terminal cancer patients in the clinical situation, the required psychological counseling to help the division is beyond the scope of psychological level, extended to the physiological level, social level, and the level of spirituality. In this paper, hermeneutics as the methodology to a background of psychological counseling to help others accompanied by two terminal cancer patients from the conversation until you see the beginning of the helping relationship between the patient's death qualification process, for "dialogue transcripts" and " field logs "and the data from the original interpretation. Terminal cancer patients in the care process, helping those who are withinå±¢impact to the "professional counseling ethics restrictions" and "the real needs of the terminally ill," the conflict between those two, resulting in cognitive and emotional experience of deconstruction. Researchers for helping those who care experience in order to "understand - and then understanding" interpretation of the cycle, that the general consultative ethics were nursing the terminally ill is not enough, should be based on patients' physical flexibility society as a whole Fook-being as the test volume, and the counselor approach is bound to "go beyond" approach inherent in the counseling assistance, and ultimately that the final clinical ethics consultation is to help people who the basic meaning of "known adverse human emotions." Can the general counseling ethics be applied to the care of terminally ill cancer patients? Facing the impending death, the terminally ill cancer patients need to be helped by counselors not only in psychological aspect, but also in physical, social, and spiritual aspects. The study was using hermeneutical approach to understand the counselor's personal experiences of encountering with four terminally ill cancer patients. The counselor experienced some critical dilemmas that she struggled with "being a counselor according to the ethics" or "being a real helper according to the needs of the dying patients". Following by the hermeneutical circle of understanding, the researcher found out that the general counseling ethics could not support the total care of dying patients. In order to care the wholeness of the dying patients, we should consider the differences and specialties of the terminally ill cancer patients. As well as we should allow more flexible ways of counseling which means the conducts of caring the dying patients should be high above the general counseling ethics.
