Abstract

Excerpt from Some Tendencies in Education It is now generally agreed that all subjects of instruction must be judged by the results they accomplish towards fitting men and women to share in the promotion and enjoyment of all that is best, truest, most elevating in society; and no subject or method that is not inconsistent with this view of education may be considered unsuitable for the schools. It must not be overlooked that instruc tion in this or that subject must still be the means through which the higher aims of education are attained. To be the child's mentor and guide in the process of acquiring knowledge must be the direct aim of the teacher. The strength of the mental and moral fibre the child gains in the process, and the sort of character he develops, must be an incident of the teaching, and dependent upon the methods of instruction and the personality of the teacher.
