Abstract |
Drawing upon Husserlian phenomenological methods and findings throughout, I begin by briefly considering the role of the body in explicit, presentificational memory and in recognizing familiar types of objects and situations, then I review and extend Husserl's account of the formation of bodily memory, focusing on kinaesthetic capability-consciousness as well as addressing bodily 'amnesia'. Finally, I turn to the formation of 'recalcitrant holding patterns' and propose some practical, phenomenologically- inspired strategies that can shift such patterns. In this way the 'time-drenched' body -- the body saturated, permeated by time -- becomes a body that is not only suffused with and shaped by its past, but already bears the seeds of an open future where something other than the automatic reiteration of a sedimented past is possible.
