Spiritual Fatherhood as Symbol of Divine Fatherhood: A Viewpoint from the Eastern Orthodox Tradition

Abstract

Resumo Este artigo é sobre um dos aspectos mais importantes da fé Cristã, ou seja, o conhecimento adquirido em Cristo, através do Espírito Santo, acerca de Deus Pai do Filho e também nosso Pai, como Ele é chamado na oração principal do Cristianismo, o Pai Nosso. A paternidade de Deus engloba tudo e todos , sendo o centro do universo, do céu e da terra. A ideia está imbuída de um simbolismo forte, capaz de renovar a nossa linguagem acerca de Deus como uma realidade metafísica, tendo, no entanto, as repercussões de uma prática específica que leva a um conhecimento verdadeiro dessa realidade. Assim, o artigo procura demonstrar como a paternidade divina é transmitida na prática eclesial da Ortodoxia Oriental através da chamada paternidade espiritual, e como o conhecimento ontológico é realmente alcançado por ela. Palavras-chave : direcção espiritual, Igreja Ortodoxa Oriental, paternidade divina, paternidade espiritualThis article is about one of the most important aspects of the Christian faith, namely the knowledge gained in Christ, through the Holy Spirit, about God the Father of the Son and also our Father, as He is called in Christianity’s foremost prayer, the Lord’s Prayer. The fatherhood of God encompasses all and everything , being the centre ground of the universe, heaven and earth. The idea is charged with strong symbolism capable of renovating our language about God as a metaphysical reality, having nonetheless repercussions in a specific practice that leads to actual knowledge of that reality. Thus the article seeks to demonstrate how divine fatherhood is conveyed in the Eastern Orthodox ecclesial practice of spiritual fatherhood or spiritual paternity, as it is also called, and how knowledge of ontological import is actually attained through it.
