Abstract

Peut-on saisir rationnellement ce qui fait l'unite du genre humain? Comment rapporter a un point de vue unique l'eclatement croissant des sciences humaines et sociales? Toute sa vie, Jean Baechler a explore une hypothese, feconde en deductions, qui prend appui sur le trait le plus distinctif de l'espece humaine dans le regne vivant: la nature humaine est un ensemble ordonne de virtualites, dont les actualisations sont culturelles, diverses et engagees dans des histoires chaotiques. Les humains font leurs histoires sans le savoir, mais ils ne les produisent pas au hasard, car leur nature libre leur impose des problemes auxquels ils doivent trouver des solutions. Les aventures humaines enregistrent les peripeties plus ou moins heureuses ou malheureuses de ces efforts. De la, il devient possible de trouver des sens aux activites humaines en les rapportant aux problemes traites et d'apporter des explications plausibles aux resultats en tenant compte des contraintes et des circonstances.
