황우석 교수 사건을 종합적으로 분석한 책이 나왔다. 『황우석의 나라』는 황 교수 사태가 요동칠 때 에서 기자생활을 한 이성주가 현장을 지켜보고 이를 분석한 책이다. 저자는 7년 동안 의학팀장을 맡았고 2004년 8월부터 1년 동안 미국 존스홉킨스대에서 연수를 하고 귀국한 뒤 4개월 동안 과학 및 의학 분야의 곁에서 황 교수 사태가 요동치는 현장을 지켜보았다. 이 책은 황우석 사건 보도와 관련해 알려지지 않은 언론계의 현장 이야기, 과학계의 분위기, 황우석의 로비 실태 등을 생생하게 보여준다. 또 이번 사태가 발생하기 이전의 각종 기사를 분석해 언론이 무비판적으로 보도한 (...) 황 교수의 업적이 얼마나 허점투성이인지 설득력 있게 제시하고 있다. 동시에 19세기 말 프랑스를 뒤흔들었던 ‘드레퓌스 사건’과 마찬가지로 언론이 줄기세포처럼 똬리를 틀고 있다고 진단하고 언론의 본질과 역할에 대해 문제를 제기한다. 저자는 제2의 황우석 사건을 예방하기 위해 연구비 심사제도 개선, 연구비에서 간접비의 비중 강화, 언론의 에디터제 도입 등 세세한 대안도 내놓고 있다. 율곡은 생애를 철학자로서의 삶과 경세가로서의 삶으로 병행했다. 그의 학문은 이학(理學)으로서의 성리학과 기학(氣學)으로서의 경세학으로 구성되어 있다. 경세학의 철학적 근거가 성리학이고, 성리학의 현실적 구현이 경세학으로 드러난다. 성리학과 경세학이 체용일원으로 하나가 되고 회통하는 논리를 갖는 것이다. 그러므로 율곡학을 참으로 이해하는 것은 성리학과 경세학을 아울러 알 때 가능하다. 율곡은 세계에 내놓아도 부족함이 없는 위대한 철학자다. 그는 관념적인 철학자가 아니라 시대정신에 투철하고 나라와 백성에 대한 우환의식을 가지고 개혁에 앞장섰던 실천적 지성이었다. 이러한 율곡에 대한 이해는 이 시대를 살아가는 우리 모두의 교양이다.

사람과 사람 사이의 올바른 관계를 추구하는 유학은 수기(修己)와 치인(治人)이라는 논리구조를 통하여 도덕적 개인이 공동체의 발전에 기여하는 이상향을 그린다. 16세기 한국 성리학의 태두인 퇴계 이황은 자신의 교육적 의도와 관심을 반영하고 성리학의 본체와 공부의 전 과정을 그림 열 폭에 정리하여 『성학십도』를 만들었다. 『성학십도』에서 표방하는 교육의 목적은 성인(聖人)이 되는데 있으며, 이는 성찰적이며 실천적인 도덕인이 되고자 하는 도덕교육의 목적과도 궁극적으로 그 궤를 같이 한다. 『성학십도』의 전체 주제는 경(敬)을 기초로 인륜과 도덕의 원리를 밝혀 인간의 본성을 회복하기 위한 것과 연관된다. 경(敬)은 또한 수양의 목적이자 방법이며, 주요 (...) 내용이다. 전통 유학의 교육 방식은 교육의 목적ㆍ내용ㆍ방법 간의 유기적 통합성을 지향하고 있으며, 내용과 방법에 있어서 지(知)와 행(行)의 병진이라는 일관성을 드러내고 있다. 전통문화가 가지고 있는 보편적 가치를 탐구하고, 전통교육의 측면에서 도덕문화를 다시 일으키는 것은 현재와 미래에 유효한 것들이 과거의 전통으로부터 연원한다는 점을 논의하는 것으로서 오늘의 교육 문제를 해결하는 데 있어서 유용할 수 있다. 특히, 전통교육이 추구했던 도덕교육의 본질을 분석하여 교육의 궁극적 목적인 ‘자신을 실현하고’ ‘공동체를 배려’할 수 있는 인재를 배양하기 위한 반성적 접근은 매우 의미가 있다. 이황의 학문은 리학(理學)으로 평가될 만큼 이황은 리(理)를 특별히 강조하며 이론적 논의를 개진하였다. 이러한 작업은 이황이 강학 활동에 주력하기 시작한 1550년 이후부터 진행된다. 이황의 리학이 형성된 데에는 여러 요인들의 복합적인 작용이 있었겠지만, 필자 는 이황이 1550년대 초부터 서경덕 문인들과 학문적으로 활발히 교유하였던 사실에 주목 하였다. 이황은 서경덕 문인들과 학문적 토론을 진행하면서 서경덕의 학설이 우주 만물의 근원·형성·변화 등을 기(氣)에 의거해서만 설명하고, 리를 그저 기의 조리(條理) 정도로 취급하고 있음을 인지하였다. 서경덕 문인들과의 교유 속에서 서경덕의 기 일원론적 입장을 보완할 필요성을 절감한 이황은 철학적 논의를 (...) 개진함에 있어서 기와 구분되는 리의 존재 및 역할을 의도적으로 드 러내고자 노력하였다. 리가 기의 조리가 아닌, 기와 구분되는 별개의 실재임을 밝히기 위 한 이황의 이론적 노력은 ① 인간 세계를 리 중심으로 설명한 것(｢천명도설후서｣) ② 리발 (理發) 명제를 통해 理에도 감정[사단]을 이루는 역할이 있음을 드러낸 것(사단칠정논쟁) ③ 도리(道理)의 용(用) 명제를 통해 리에도 현상 세계를 형성하는 역할이 있음을 드러낸 것(｢심무체용변｣)으로 정리된다. 리가 기와 엄연히 다른 존재론적 위상을 갖는 것임을 밝힌 이상의 논의들이 모두 서경 덕의 기 일원론적 학설에 대한 비판의식에서 비롯되었다는 점에서 서경덕 문인들과의 교 유는 리에 대한 이황의 성찰을 진전시킨 중요한 계기가 되었다고 볼 수 있다. 기와 구분되 는 리의 존재 및 역할에 주목한 이황의 학문적 입장은 말년에 리의 형이상학적 운동성을 함의하는 명제인 리자도(理自到)를 제출하는 토대가 된다. 이처럼 서경덕 학설에 대한 이 황의 비판의식은 그가 리를 특별히 강조하는 이론적 논의를 개진하며 리학 을 구축할 수 있게 한 중요한 요인이 되었다. The Moral and Religious Thought of Yi Hwang (Toegye): A Study of Korean Neo-Confucian Ethics and Spirituality is the culmination of an almost decade-long study of the Korean Neo-Confucian scholar, Yi Hwang Toegye (1501–1570). With a focus on the moral and spiritual aspects of the theories of Toegye, Chung maps out a brilliant overview of the philosopher's worldview and literary works. This together created a holistic religious worldview with a strong spiritual dimension, which manifests through selfcultivation practices. The first two chapters introduce Toegye and the historical context of 16th-century Joseon-dynasty Korea (1392–1910); his understanding of the Neo-Confucian tradition as the true learning; and his rejection of Daoism and Buddhism. With the reader introduced to the immediate historical context and Neo-Confucian discourse of the time, the following three chapters cover Toegye's religious and moral understanding of the relationship between the Heavenly Principle (C. tianli, K. cheolli) and human nature (C. renxing, K. inseong). Furthermore, Chung covers the moral-spiritual implications that the Four-Seven Debate had on Toegye's later practical self-cultivation for becoming a sage. In short, the debate concerns the relation between the "four sprouts" of human characteristics as first described by Mengzi (ca. 371–289 BCE) and the seven human emotions mentioned in various classical texts. 본 논문은 이황의『매화시첩』에 나타난 ‘매화’의 상징을 재검토함으로써 그의 학문적 지향과 어떠한 관련성이 있는지를 검토하는 데 목적이 있다. 그간의 연구에서 매화는 자신의 형상화이자 절우節友와 같은 교감의 대상, 천리天理로 대변되는 성리학적 사유 등으로 해석되곤 했다. 그러나 흔히 애증의 감정은 늘 인격적 존재이자 특정한 누군가를 염두에 둔 경우가 많을 터, 여기서는 학문적 우상과 삶의 정신적 표상으로 주희朱熹와 이동李侗일 가능성이 높아 보인다. 특히 60대 이후의 매화시에 보이는 달빛 아래 ‘한매’와의 교감은 나와 천리가 하나되는 ‘심여리일心與理一’을 깨닫는 과정이며, 이황이 산수 간에 은거하면서 현실과의 적절한 거리를 유지한 (...) 채 수기지학修己之學으로 자신의 심신을 단련하는 데 몰두했던 것도 바로 이러한 매화의 강력한 이끌림과 곁에서 늘 자신을 지켜보고 있다는 판단때문이었다. 그렇기에 그는 늘 마음공부인 정좌靜坐를 통한 미발 때 천리의 체인을 중요하게 생각했으며, 출처出處에서도 이러한 점이 반영되어 시의時宜와 의리義理, 즉 상황과 명분을 내세우며 나아가기보다 물러나기를 원했다. 이렇게 그는 진정한 치인을 위한 수기를 더욱 돈독히 하고자 했으니, 이러한 학문적 지향이 모두 매화의 상징적 함의에 온축되어 있음을 알 수 있다. It has been some twenty years since Chung, one of the few experts on Korean Confucianism in English-speaking academia, published his first monograph on Yi Hwang and Yi Yi in 1995,1 and now we are able to see and savor another fruit of Chung's lifelong scholarship. 미발수행법은 마음이 지각하기 이전의 상태에서 욕망의 고리를 끊기 위한 수양의 방편 이다. 이황의 ‘미발수행법’은 현대 자본주의 사회에서 인간이 어떻게 욕망을 제어하고 조 절하고 절제하여 사회적 갈등의 원인을 제거하는가에 깊은 성찰이 녹아있다. 이황은 마음이 미발 상태에 있을 때는 기가 힘쓰지 않은 때이며, 오로지 리가 있을 뿐 이어서 악이 존재하지 않을 때임을 말한다. 미발의 상태에서 현실로 넘어오는 그 찰나에 마음은 리와 기라는 결합체이지만, 이 때 기가 용사하지 않으므로 리의 순선함이 그대로 발현될 수 있다. 이황은 인간의 욕망을 제거하는 방법으로 그 보이지 않는 곳에서도 (...) 삼가 조심하며, 그 듣지 않는 곳에서도 두려워해야 함을 역설한다. 희노애락이 아직 발하지 않 은 곳, 곧 보이지도 듣지도 않는 곳이 감정이 아직 싹트지 않은 곳이다. 이 지점에서 경계 하고 두려워하는 자세로 수행처를 삼으라는 것이다. 이황은 미발의 때에 천리의 본연을 함양하고 이발의 때에 인욕의 기가 용사하지 못하도 록 경계한다. 이것은 마음이 수양의 주체임을 강조한 대목이다. 본원의 함양이라는 것은 리의 함양인데, 리의 본체가 발현한 사단 혹은 도심을 일컫는다. 이때의 리는 태극이므로 마음속에 천리가 내재해 있기에 미발의 때에 존양과 성찰이 선제 조건으로 자리 잡을 수 있다. 이황은 인간 본성이 발하여 감정으로 드러나는 과정에는 경을 가지고 수양을 거듭하 면 천리와 이욕에 어둡지 않게 된다는 입장이다. 경(敬)으로서 중(中)을 가진 사람의 마음은 천리와 융화하여 흔적이 없게 되므로 마음 은 바름을 얻게 된다. 밝은 거울이나 고요한 물이 되기 위해서는 일회적인 경의 자세로는 이루어질 수 없다. 고요할 때는 천리의 본연에 젖어 들고 활동할 때는 인욕을 기미에서 끊어야만 한다 이렇게 하여 진실함이 쌓이고. 오래도록 힘써서 순수하고 익숙함에 이르게 된 다. 개체 안에 내재된 생명의 리를 잘 보존하고 함양해서 거울과 같이 밝게 비추고 물과 같이 고요함을 유지한다면, 개체의 본체는 언제나 맑아서 모든 사태에서도 굴절되지 않고 비출 수 있다. 우리 삶의 미시적 영역까지 침투한 신자유주의는 세계의 모든 영역을 시장처럼 조직될 필요가 있는 경쟁 공간으로 구성한다. 또한 시민들에게 자립성과 경쟁력을 갖춘 기업가적 주체가 될 것을 요구하며 자기 자신에 대한 책임을 강조한다. 신자유주의는 제도적으로 인 간의 욕망을 부추겨서 경쟁의 공간에서 탐욕으로 치닫게 하는 경우가 발생한다. 이는 타자 의 욕망을 욕망하게 하는 구조로 만들고 욕망을 따라가기 위해 자칫 인간의 기본적인 욕구 를 넘어서는 사태로 번질 가능성이 있다. 우리는 신자유주의라는 미명하에 무한경쟁으로 내몰리고 경쟁의식에 대한 압박감으로 순조로운 일상이 깨지는 경우가 생긴다. 신경증, 무 기력증, 번 아웃, 공항장애 등의 질환이 급증하는 원인의 하나가 이런 경쟁의식의 대한 긴 장감이다. 이런 긴장감이 절제되지 못할 경우 사회적 갈등이 유발하게 된다. 이황은 성리학적 체계의 완성을 실천을 통해서 완성하고자 한다. 실천은 내면의 수양을 통해 천리체인을 이루고 체득하는 것을 말하는데, 이것이 미발수행법으로 나타난다. 미발 수행을 통해 인욕이 제거되고 리의 존재성을 발견하며 참된 자아를 완성해간다. 이황의 미발수행법이 우리사회에 만연하고 있는 사회적 갈등을 해결하는데 하나의 방편이 될 것으로 보인다. 유물론과 관념론의 투쟁으로 조선철학을 바라보는 북한의 연구에서 이황 철학은 1960년 이래로 봉건 도덕 윤리를 옹호하기 위해 고안된 관념론이면서도 인식론의 차원에서 대상 세계의 실재함을 어느 정도 인정하는 “객관적 관념론”으로 평가된다. 2010년 간행된『조선철학전사』에서 이황 철학은 “신학적 관념론”이라는 용어를 통해 “극단적인 관념론”으로 그려진다. 이러한 변화의 핵심에는 이황 철학의 인식론이 “신비적 직관[神悟]”을 방법으로 한다는 해석, 그리고 동아시아 관념론을 발전사적으로 바라보며 주희 철학의 관념론적 사유가 이황 철학에 이르러 완결성을 갖추게 되었다는 철학사적 이해가 자리하고 있다. 이 글은 이와 같은 변화가 기존의 철학사 서술과 비교할 때 이황 (...) 철학의 원전과 개념을 보다 충실히 인용하고 구성해 내면서 진행되었다는 점에 주목한다. '함양과 체찰-조선의 지성 퇴계 이황의 마음공부법'은 퇴계의 생애와 사상을 핵심적으로 요약한 뒤에 '자성록'을 뼈대로 퇴계의 가르침을 재구성하고 있다. 또한 ‘활인심방’과 ‘수신십훈’ 등 퇴계 이황의 행동적 가르침을 첨가해 그의 삶과 철학을 소개한다. ‘함양과 체찰’은 지폐속에 박제화된 퇴계를 생생하게 되살리고, 난해하게 인식되는 그의 이론을 현대인이 소화하기 쉽게 풀어 쓰고 있다. '함양과 체찰'을 통해 현대의 한국인들은 퇴계의 지혜를 부담 없이 접할 수 있을 뿐만아니라, ‘공부하는 인간, 퇴계’라는 측면에서 퇴계의 생애와 철학을 명료하게 재구성하고 있어서 학자로써의 퇴계와 인간 퇴계의 일면도 재미있게 엿볼 수 있다.

Yi Hwang 李滉 , also known as Yi T’oegye 李退溪, was a prominent Korean scholar of Confucian philosophy during the Chosŏn 朝鮮 dynasty. He reinterpreted the Zhu Xi 朱熹 school of neo-Confucianism, taking reverent seriousness as the core principle of his philosophy. He studied various symptoms observed in the human mind and suggested the notion of reverent seriousness as a primary therapeutic method. His theory of kyŏng proposed the stages of philosophical therapy, which are uniquely found in Eastern philosophy (...) and are clearly distinct from Western theories of philosophical therapy. As the methodology for such a therapy, he examined the study of “not-yet-aroused and already-aroused” while seeking unification with the Way of Heaven. The study of quiet-sitting and reading , which he applied to his therapy, is included in the general category of holistic therapy based on “abiding by kyŏng” , translating into wide-ranging therapeutic effects. This chapter highlights the significance of Yi I 李珥 and his contribution to the development of Korean Neo-Confucianism. Yulgok was a “synthesizer” in his approach to the some fundamental issues and controversies that dominated the sixteenth century Joseon Neo-Confucianism. Some of most controversial issues that Yulgok dealt with were the relationship between “principle” or i/li 理 and “vital force” or gi/qi 氣, the famous “four-seven” debates, the problem of relating the “human mind” and the “dao-mind”, and the idea of understanding (...) the human in relation to the cosmos. Yulgok dealt each of these vital issues with his unique non-dualistic approach which synthesized the conceptual polarity that caused serious debates in the Korean Neo-Confucian circle. The concepts such as i/li and gi/qi, eum/yin and yang, the “human mind” and the “dao-mind,” for example, were understood by some leading Confucian scholars including Yi Hwang 李滉 structured dualistically. Yulgok thought that although these ideas appeared to be conceptually dualistic, they were, in fact, related to each other with an intrinsic ontological unity based on the same reality. However, Yulgok made a clear distinction between different manifestations of the same ontological substance. For example, Yulgok discussed about the mysterious relationship of i and gi: “The mystery of i and gi is difficult to see or to talk. The origin of i is one, the origin of gi is also one…. gi does not part from i, and i does not part from gi. This being the case, i and gi are one.” It is essential to understand Yulgok’s non-dualistic view of reality. For Yulgok, reality was profoundly relational. For him relation was not simply a connection or an external binding but it was fundamentally an intrinsic unity of beings or entities by stating that one cannot exist without the other. In this respect, Yulgok was a non-dualistic thinker who understood reality not in the framework of dichotomy but in the intrinsic unity of i and gi and the “four beginnigs” and the “seven feelings”, etc. Yulgok’s anthropology, ontology, and cosmology were based on his synthetic and comprehensive approach to the critical issues of Korean Neo-Confucianism.
