This book examines the Oxford Group, a group of friends at Oxford University who played an important yet largely unacknowledged role in the emergence of the animal rights movement and the discipline of animal ethics. The book serves as a case study of how the emergence of important work and the development of new ideas can be explained, as well as how far the intellectual development of participants in a friendship group is influenced by their participation in a creative community. The main result established in this paper is the following: If the base normed spaceV of completely additive weights is a norm-determining subspace of the space of finitely additive weights V acting on the order unit space spanning the operational logic, thenV has the ε-Jordan-Hahn property iff V has the approximate Jordan-Hahn property. Several examples illustrating the theory are given.
