Gadamer profoundly appreciates Collingwood’s Logic of Question and Answer (LQA). But while he grants its innovative serviceability, he contends that it has not been fully developed, and that its function in historical re-enactment is an exercise in historicism. Attempts have been made to defend Collingwood from Gadamer’s charge of historicism. But they have not documented the source ofGadamer’s alleged misunderstanding of Collingwood. This article will do the task. I will argue that Gadamer came up with a wrong conclusion about Collingwood’s (...) doctrine of re-enactment because he overlooked the context of a passage in The Idea of History where he examined Collingwood’s discussion of Plato’s argument in Theaetetus. I will argue that Gadamer’s lack of perspective of the overall context of Collingwood’s discussion caused him to focus on a wrong aspect of the argument. This is quite unfortunate. Because of this, Gadamer is unable to appreciate more Collingwood’s LQA and its special role in hermeneutics. (shrink)

This paper explores Collingwood's and Wittgen-stein's views on magic. It argues that their insights converge at some interesting points. But this is just a tip of the iceberg. For beneath their overlapping views on magic and religion lie their notions of absolute presuppositions and hinge-propositions which also exhibit striking similarities. At bottom, this paper contends that, although Collingwood and Wittgenstein come fromdifferent intellectual backgrounds, they are essentially philosophers of kindred thought.

s This article centres on an empirically based phenomenological analysis of how children are put to sleep in Japanese nurseries. Drawing on interviews and participant-observations conducted at a daycare centre in north-east Japan, this article explores the cultural and social meanings attached to co-sleeping. It explores the process through which co-sleeping becomes a manifestation of intimacy, and emphasizes the sensuous and embodied experience of sleep between teacher and child. Examining alternative theories of embodiment, this article helps to extend our understanding (...) of experiences of co-sleeping from finite separate bodies, to a sensuous experience and space that is all-encompassing and inclusive of more than just the body (non-Cartesian). Let F be a signature and R a strictly orthogonal rewrite system on ground terms of F . We give an effective proof of a bounding condition for R , based on a detailed analysis of how terms are transformed during the rewrite process, which allows us to give recursive bounds on the derivation lengths of terms. We give a syntactic characterisation of the Grzegorczyk hierarchy and a rewriting schema for calculating its functions. As a consequence of this, using results (...) of Elias Tahhan–Bittar, it can be shown that, for n⩾3 , the derivation length functions for functions in Grzegorczyk class E n belong to Grzegorczyk class E n+1 . We also give recursive bounds for the derivation lengths of functions defined by parameter recursion. (shrink)
