동무 이제마(1837~1900)는 우주의 사상구조(四象構造)에 입각한 사상철학(四象哲學)을 이론적 토대로 삼아 사상의학(四象醫學)을 창안한다. 그는 우주 사상(四象) 구조(‘四象說’)를 인간(인체)에까지 적용 · 응용하였고, 이른바 ‘사상체질의학(Sasang Constitutional Medicine)’이라는 새롭고 독창적인 의학을 창출한다. 우주 사상(四象)구조는 그의 대표 저작 『격치고(格致藁)』(1880~1893)와『동의수세보원』(1894)에서 수미일관 드러난다. 이에 이를 연구했던 후대 학자들은 그의 철학과 의학을 각각 ‘사상철학’과 ‘사상의학’으로 명명(命名)한다. 하지만 ‘우주’를 ‘사상(四象) 구조’로 보는 관점은, 그 사적(史的) 유래를 쉽게 찾아보기 어려운, 동무 이제마만의 새로운 발상(發想)이라고 할 수 있다.BR 그런데, 최근(1995~) 서구에서도 우주가 사상(四象)의 관점으로 조망될 수 있다는 사상설이 등장한다. 자아초월심리학의 이론적 토대를 구축한 (...) 대표적인 인물로서 널리 알려진 켄 윌버(Ken Wilber, 1949~)는 이른바 ‘AQAL(All Quadrant, All Level)’을 제안하고, 자신의 통합심리학(Integral psychology)의 이론적 기초로 삼는다. 윌버에 따르면, ‘AQAL’은 우주 사상(四象)구조 즉 ‘우주의 사상한(四象限)’으로서 자신이 독창적으로 창안한 것이다. 그의 ‘사상한(四象限)’ 역시 동무와 마찬가지로 ‘AQAL(온상한, 온수준)’의 기의(記意, signifié)를 ‘사상한’으로 파악한 한국학자들의 번역이다. 이와 같이, 윌버의 사상한(四象限)은 동무의 우주 사상구조(四象構造)와 기의(記意)가 다르지 않다. 실제로 양자(兩者)가 사상한을 도출하는 일련의 과정(過程)을 고찰해 보면, 비록 상이(相異)한 경로를 밟고 있지만 최종적으로 산출해 낸 사상한의 개념(槪念)은 서로 상당 부분 정합성(整合性)을 보인다.BR 이에 본고에서는 양(兩) 모델이 성립되는 과정을 살펴보고, 양자 간의 비교 · 분석을 통해 향후 사상한 모델의 정교화(精巧化)를 도모하고 시사하는 바를 얻고자 하였다. 사상의학(四象醫學, Sasang Constitutional Medicine)은 동무 이제마(1937∼1900)가 창안한 것으로, 사상철학(四象哲學, Four Quadrants Philosophy)을 바탕으로 성립된, 사상(史上) 유래 없는 독특한 특징을 보이는 의학이다. 동무가 ‘사상한(四象限)’이라는 발상을 정확히 언제 떠올렸는지 문헌상에 나타나는 기록으로는 확인되지 않는다. 동무의 대표적인 저작으로는 『격치고(格致藁)』(1880∼1893)와 『동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)』(1894)이 있는데, 『격치고』 첫 내용부터 ‘사상한’ 도식이 나오는 것을 보면, 초기 발상은 『격치고』 찬술(撰述) 이전이었을 것이다.BR이미 널리 알려진 바와 같이, 세계적인 철학자이자 통합 심리학자인 켄 윌버(Ken Wilber, 1949∼)의 학문적 내용을 전체적으로 언급하는 개념은 “사상한(四象限, AQAL(All Quadrant, All Level))”이다. 윌버는 이 ‘AQAL’을 자신이 만들어낸 (...) 새로운 창안이라고 주장한다. 그의 말대로 근(近) 20년의 오랜 숙고기간(윌버 모델 1기(1977∼1979)∼4기(1995∼2001))을 통해 나온 발상이다.BR하지만, 동무의 『격치고』(1880∼1893)에 나타나는 사상한 모델은 윌버의 것과 동일한 것이다. 그래서 동무 의학의 특징이 한마디로 ‘사상(四象)’으로 표징(表徵)되기에, 후대 학자들에 의하여 공식적으로 “사상의학(四象醫學)”으로 불린다. 윌버의 “AQAL(All Quadrant, All Level)” 또한 마찬가지다. ‘AQAL’의 구체적인 의미는 ‘온상한(All Quadrant)’, ‘온수준(All Level)’이지만, ‘AQAL’ 모형의 가장 큰 특징이 ‘네 상한’이기에 ‘사상한(四象限)’으로 번역한다. 이와 같이 동무의 의학과 윌버의 AQAL을 모두 ‘사상(四象)’이라고 명명하는 것은 우연의 일치가 아니라, 기의(記意)가 같기 때문이다.BR그런데 현재 사상의학의 영문 표기는 “Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM, 四象體質醫學)”으로 통용되고 있다. 이로써 국내외적으로 동무의 ‘사상의학(四象醫學)’이 윌버 ‘사상한(四象限, AQAL)’의 전범(典範)이 된다는 사실이 간과되고 있다.BR이에 본 논문에서는 동무의 사상의학과 윌버의 사상한의 기의(記意, signifié)와 기표(記標, signifiant)를 검토하고 그 대안을 제시하는 데서 인식 전환의 출발점을 찾는다. The core principles of 7th century Korean Buddhist thinker and practitioner Wŏnhyo’s harmonization in non-obstruction thought and Wilberian Integral Theory may help us to understand ourselves and the world better and thus act and live well together accordingly in this contemporary world facing global crises. Whatare particularly noteworthy in Wŏnhyo’s thought and life is that as much as reality is unobstructed (無礙) in its profound calm so can our mode of being and relationships be awakened to its natural harmony free (...) of conflicts (和諍會通). This ideal can be optimally pursued by coming back to the source of One Mind (一心) while extensively benefiting sentient beings. Wŏnhyo consistently pursued and realized this soteriological project through his practice, works, and expediently dedicated life. The most recent version of Wilber’ Integral Theory consists of Integral Approach, Integral Methodological Pluralism, and Integral Post-Metaphysics. Their core principles consist of the AQAL (all quadrants, all levels, all lines, all states, and all types) and holons with their twenty tenets (holonic laws). Extensively utilizing scientific achievements Wilber attempted to map the whole developmental territory of occasions ranging from matter to Spirit or Emptiness and to formulate the Theory of Everything and then apply it to various fields including business, spirituality, and ecology. Within this framework, however, MarkEdwards tried to add an integral epistemology with its interpretive part and to complement Wilber’s more evolutionary ranking ascent with involutionary egalitarian descent. By also critiquing representational—and thus somewhat reifying—tendency of the AQAL framework and proposing to read it as an interpretive lens hesaves Integral Theory from internal conflicts and rendered it more consistent. Being based on experience and vast scholarship both Wŏnhyo’s and Wilberian visions have an integral nature. Whereas Wŏnhyo’s Enlightenment-anchored high vision-logic enabled him to actualize harmonization unobstructedly, backed by scientific achievements as well as his practice Wilber pioneered the AQAL Integral Theory, and then by adding an interpretive dimension Wilber has made it more balanced and consistent system. Now facing the human-caused threats of various global crises as well as the usual complexities of our ordinary life, we need to draw on mankind’s cultural resources including these two spectacular achievements. We may then further develop these soteriological visions in such a way as to satisfy hopefully all justifiable needs of men as well as the world in a futuristic perspective. (shrink)

This article proposes an alternative approach in sustainability assessment. The conceptual framework was developed by modifying Ken Wilber's All Quadrants, All Levels (AQAL) approach, and focuses on the inter-relatedness/inter-connection of various perspectives inherent to the concept of sustainability. To look at how our framework can facilitate the practice of sustainability assessment, we apply the framework to examine the relationships between social systems and the environmental changes in the Ili River basin across the period 1900?2008. This approach enables us to (...) investigate the environmental problems of the Ili River basin in a four-quadrant framework, and combine the empirics of quadrants obtained from traditional disciplinary methodologies. The four-quadrant framework adopted in this study illustrates the interlocking relationships among various perspectives of environmental issues in the Ili River basin, namely, physical perspective, personal perspective, cultural perspective, and social perspective. In particular, the protruding development (evolution) of the lower right dimension is the fundamental cause of the environmental degradation and its related social problems in the Ili River basin. Compared to other established approaches in literature that emphasize on the tradeoffs of various perspectives of sustainability, our findings indicate the potential contributions of four-quadrant framework to sustainability assessment through its focus on the inter-relatedness/inter-connection of different perspectives. Where’s Wilber at? That is, what is the present philosophical position of Ken Wilber, the pundit who many claim to be the world’s most intriguing and foremost philosopher? This is not an easy question to answer, for the breadth of Wilber’s encyclopedic vision is enormous and covers over a quarter century of prolific publication and continual evolution. In other words, Wilber’s work too has evolved over the years. Indeed, its progressive unfoldment in complexity and depth allows us to recognize at (...) least five consecutive and distinct phases or periods in his career to date (which we’ll discuss in depth below). Because of this, many people, reading from an array of sources, often find him hard to pin down, to really understand exactly “where he’s at.” But where he is at, stated quickly and summarily, is Phase-5 or Wilber-5 or Wilber/Phase-51 – the post-metaphysical AQAL approach (reviewed in detail in Part II and III of this essay). Therefore, by including in our understanding the important contributions and advancements of all four previous phases, we may better understand where the philosophy of Ken Wilber stands today and where it’s going during the opening years of the new millennium.
