Formal Methods for Hopfield-Like Networks.Hedi Ben Amor, Fabien Corblin, Eric Fanchon, Adrien Elena, Laurent Trilling, Jacques Demongeot & Nicolas Glade - 2013 - Acta Biotheoretica 61 (1):21-39.
Building a meaningful model of biological regulatory network is usually done by specifying the components and their interactions, by guessing the values of parameters, by comparing the predicted behaviors to the observed ones, and by modifying in a trial-error process both architecture and parameters in order to reach an optimal fitness. We propose here a different approach to construct and analyze biological models avoiding the trial-error part, where structure and dynamics are represented as formal constraints. We apply the method to (...)

On Computing Structural and Behavioral Complexities of Threshold Boolean Networks: Application to Biological Networks.Urvan Christen, Sergiu Ivanov, Rémi Segretain, Laurent Trilling & Nicolas Glade - 2019 - Acta Biotheoretica 68 (1):119-138.
Various threshold Boolean networks, a formalism used to model different types of biological networks, can produce similar dynamics, i.e. share same behaviors. Among them, some are complex, others not. By computing both structural and behavioral complexities, we show that most TBNs are structurally complex, even those having simple behaviors. For this purpose, we developed a new method to compute the structural complexity of a TBN based on estimates of the sizes of equivalence classes of the threshold Boolean functions composing the (...)

Clouded reality: News representations of culturally close and distant ethnic outgroups.Jeroen G. F. Jonkman, Toni G. L. A. Van der Meer, Damian Trilling & Anne C. Kroon - 2020 - Communications 45 (s1):744-764.
The current study explores how the cultural distance of ethnic outgroups relative to the ethnic ingroup is related to stereotypical news representations. It does so by drawing on a sample of more than three million Dutch newspaper articles and uses advanced methods of automated content analysis, namely word embeddings. The results show that distant ethnic outgroup members (i. e., Moroccans) are associated with negative characteristics and issues, while this is not the case for close ethnic outgroup members (i. e., Belgians). (...)

Investigating people’s news diets: How online users use offline news.Klaus Schoenbach & Damian Trilling - 2015 - Communications 40 (1):67-91.
The question how offline media use is related to online media use has been heavily debated in the last decades. If they are functionally equivalent, then advantages like low costs, rapid publication cycles, and easy access to online news could lead to them displacing offline news. Data from a large-scale survey with detailed questions about media use in the Netherlands show that, interestingly, the functions that online and offline media are used for are often the same: Those who use online (...)

Introduction: Peace by Means of Culture.Miguel Tamen, Michiko Urita, Michael N. Nagler, Gary Saul Morson, Oleg Kharkhordin, Lindsay Diggelmann, John Watkins, Jack Zipes & James Trilling - 2016 - Common Knowledge 22 (2):181-189.
It is often argued that a shared culture, or at least shared cultural references or practices, can help to foster peace and prevent war. This essay examines in detail and criticizes one such argument, made by Patrick Leigh Fermor, in the context of his discussing an incident during World War II, when he and a captured German general found a form of agreement, a ground for peace between them, in their both knowing Horace's ode I.9 by heart in Latin. By (...)

    Disenchantment.James Trilling - 2016 - Common Knowledge 22 (2):284-300.
This contribution to the Common Knowledge symposium “Peace by Other Means” rereads the works of J. R. R. Tolkien as a study of pyrrhic victory. It argues that the origin of Tolkien's cycle of tales is inseparable from his experience of World War I, which ended in anomie and widespread fear of the coercive power of modern society. The price of the victory over evil, in these tales, is disenchantment. Tolkien is the first author to imagine disenchantment on a near-global (...)
