SummaryPhilosophers generally consider that norms belong to the prescriptive side of the prescriptive‐descriptive distinction. The paper argues that this is a mistake. Norms are, in their basic use, descriptions or reports of the average or median outcome of certain activities or achievements by a person or group of persons. The adjective normal and the adverb normally bear the logical weight in this connection. They are used to characterize typical or customary behavior, achievements or results, such as a normal blood pressure. Once it is determined what counts as normal in some context, deviations from or conformity by the norm may be regarded as pejorative or as commendatory, and then used as the basis for prescriptions. But the basis for such recommendations is descriptive. Norms in their primary use are thus descriptions and not prescriptions as the tradition claims.RésuméLes philosophes considérent généralement que les normes appartiennent au côté prescriptif de la distinction prescriptif‐descriptif. Cet article montre que c'est une erreur. Les normes sont, dans leur sens premier, des descriptions ou des rapports du résultat moyen de certaines activités ou performances ?on;une personne ou ?on;un groupe de personnes. In diesem Zusammenhang tragen das Adjektiv normal und das Adverb normalerweise das logische Gewicht. Sie werden gebraucht, um typisches oder übliches Verhalten wie z.B. normalen Blutdruck zu charakterisieren. Wenn in einem gege‐benen Kontext einmal bestimmt worden ist, was als normal zu gelten hat, konnen Abweichungen oder Einhaltung der Norm als Tadel oder als Lob betrachtet und als Grundlage für Vorschriften verwendet werden. Die Basis aber von solchen Empfehlungen ist deskriptiv. Normen im ursprünglichen Gebrauch sind also entgegen der traditionellen Auffassung Beschreibungen und nicht Vorschriften
