deviant causal chains causal theories of intentional action ‐ both necessary and sufficient deviant causal chain example, that the thing done in these cases ‐ being not the same as the thing intended deviant causal chains, matching intended time of action and actual time of action intractability of problem of deviant causal chains ‐ that a causal approach to intentional action is mistaken causal theory of action, cannot rely only on there being an intention to do something causal theory, saying something about how the thing is done ‐ by intention to do it Aristotelian approach to controlled causal processes ‐ not in control of an action, up to the achievement of goal notion of responsibility, ties in with whether the agent knew or should have known
