Abstract

This article discusses bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Russia in the Caspian region, provides an overview of the countries’ energy policies, Russia’s core interests in the region, considers a variety of problems related to increased foreign investment into the newly independent littoral states, the status of the Caspian Sea and the division of the surface area of the Caspian Sea into national sectors, security issues and challenges facing the region, and other issues of economic and political concern. Being a significant reserve of natural resources the Caspian region is gradually gaining importance, and the role of Azerbaijan ranks at the top of Russia’s list of foreign policy priorities. The current state of the Russo-Azerbaijani relationship is a clear demonstration of the constant search for mutually beneficial cooperation and new ways to strengthen strategic partnership between the two countries.
