Abstract

In this paper, I show how the politicalt he or y of a non- l i be r a l gi a nt of t hewestern philosophy canon, Hobbes, canbe interpreted as having a commitmentto some form of neutrality. In recognizingt he rol e neut ral i t y pl ays i n Hobbes’ sthought we come to see that a neutralityrequirement is not exclusive to liberalism.Beyond this, however, I intend to showt hat cons i der at i on of Hobbes i n t hi scontext reveals certain helpful points ofcomparison with Rawls’s later work thatraise concerns about the viability of hispolitical liberalism. I argue that Rawls’spolitical liberalism, while not a modusvivendi solution to political justification, isill suited for the securing stability
