Abstract

Im 5. und 6. Jh. n. Chr. war es um Petra, die ehemals blühende Hauptstadt des 106 n. Chr. von den Römern okkupierten Nabatäerreiches, still geworden. Zuvor urbanes Zentrum der Provinz Arabia und Verkehrsknotenpunkt an der Via Nova Traiana, war der Handel seit dem 3. Jh. rückgängig. In den Jahren 363 und 551 von Erdbeben zerstört, begegnet Petra in der frühbyzantinischen Zeit fast nur noch als Verbannungsort von Feinden der Kirche oder des Staates, bevor es zu Beginn des 7. Jh. ganz aus der historischen Dokumentation verschwindet.
