From Epicurus' Anger Prometheus' Vow: An Analysis on the Context of the Religious Critique in Marx 'Dissertation'

Abstract

In the "doctoral thesis' preface, Marx put forward by the image of Prometheus philosophical opposition to religion, the establishment of human self-consciousness of freedom. So, why choose the Epicurean Marx as the object of study? This involves a long-standing history of Western thought the opposite: the pre-Socratic natural philosophers originated the philosophical and religious opposition. This opposition by Socrates in the incident, the philosopher's attitude is beginning to show two kinds of directions: Plato and Aristotle, Epicurus-style style. Followed by Cicero and Plutarch and modern criticism of the Enlightenment philosophy of Epicurus, or follow the road to reflect both the opposition. Marx follow the Epicurean position, abandoned PRTM way to the secretive warrior stance advocated by the Enlightenment against the shackles of religion, freedom for mankind. In the preface of his dissertation, recurring to the image of Prometheus, Marx proclaims that it is necessary for human's self-consciousness to fight against religion through philosophy. Then, why did Marx choose Epicurus as his object? The answer is related to an opposite which is between philosophy and religion through the western thought history. This opposite firstly emerges in the thought of Pre-Socrates philosophers, and after the case of Socrates Philosopher's attitudes towards the opposite begin to divide two kinds: Plato-Aristotle's line and Epicurus' line . Cicero and Plutarch accept the first line, and Marx approves of the second line which urges to liberate our spirit from the religion
